Another great article from the Guardian Review. Possibly spurred by the Guardian Culture Blog’s coverage of the announcement, by the Munster Literature Centre, of the Frank O’Connor International Short Story prize short-list – winner to be announced in September – worth 50,000, reportedly the largest ever prize for a short story collection and part of the Cork European Capital of Culture celebration.. although it is to be hoped that the prize will continue beyond 2005. Novelist Julian Barnes on the life and work of the Irish short story writer [and obsessive rewriter], Frank O’Connor, of whom William Butler Yeats said – “O’Connor is doing for Ireland what Chekhov did for Russia”.. the prize is part of the Frank O’Connor Short Story Festival which has been held annually since 2000.
A slightly inhuman presence that bans bad comments and works late at night to remove the wrinkles in Slugger’s technical carpet. You will need to know about the comments policy to stay off the fightin’ side of me and there is a bit of background about me here.
