Cross Border European Clash

the draw for the champions league first qualifying round has thrown up a couple of interesting ties. as well as liverpool facing welsh opposition, glentoran will play shelbourne from the league of ireland on 12th or 13th july

  • Keith M

I believe the name “League of Ireland” is now replaced with “National League”, but this is certainly a good draw for Shelbourne getting a team as weak as Glentoran and a guaranteed full house. The interesting game will be the next round against former European champions Steaua Bucharest.

  • Ricardo

Dunno about that keith, the shels probably thought they would have an easy ride against linfield in the setanta cup, but as we know it didn’t work out that way 😉

I’d say over two legs the shels will take it, but it won’t be easy. I wouldn’t book my ticket to Bucharest just yet if I was you.

  • smcgiff

Don’t know about Glentoran’s form, but Shels have no reason to feel overly confident.

  • Paul

Where exactly is this town “Total Network Solutions”??

  • David

The unfortunate thing about the draw is the fact that Liverpool are actually in it. This is a severe disadvantage to a number of the teams who actually qualified for the competition in accordance with the rules. Admittedly it will greatly benefit TNS

  • Paul

“The unfortunate thing about the draw is the fact that Liverpool are actually in it”

    David,
as a Utd fan, I wholeheartedly agree!

  • Mike

Excellent draw, unfortunately many Glens fans will be feeling a bit disappointed at the minute thanks to a mix-up leading to it being reported as Glens v Liverpool.

But it should be a great tie for both clubs and the Glens have every chance of progressing to play Steaua (who by the way they playd in 1990 – drew 1-1 at home and lost 5-0 away).

  • Mick

    Any word of the venue?

  • David

Paul I am a Gillingham fan and I find it unfortunate that UEFA have moved the goal posts to suit Liverpool to the determint of other teams.

  • Donnie

As far as I know the first leg is at the Oval on 12th or 13th July! I’m sure the away fans will really be rushing to east Belfast for that one…Travel recommended by armoured car only!

  • Paul

“I find it unfortunate that UEFA have moved the goal posts to suit Liverpool to the determint of other teams”

    David,
as usual with UEFA and the Champions “Greed is Good” League the financial considerations have outweighed the moral ones. If it had been a team from outside the big 4 countries(Spain,Italy, Germany and England) you can be sure that no place would have been found for them.

  • David

Yeah Paul I agree I would have had no problems with Liverpool being in had the rules been in place before the competition started, or in a worse case scenario had UEFA interfered in the Real Madrid situation a few years ago and said that is the rule that must be followed, but they didnt and its clear theyre making the rules up as they go along

Your football analysis is worse than your poltical ones! I saw the Glens beat Shelbourne two years ago in Dublin in a well contested match.
The Glens are hardly weak-we vanquished the Blues several times this season and they managed to win the Setanta!
This should be a very interesting contest and give further evidence of the relatively even matched abilities of the top sides in both leagues.
    LJAT!

    Llansantffraid in mid-Wales.

    ‘Llansantffraid’

No wonder they go under TNS!

    Oh, btw… Up the ‘Pool!

  • Mike

The Glens play TNS away on 2 July in a firendly…so if we beat them and Shelbourne, and they beat Liverpool, we can claim to be ‘Champions of the British Isles’ or (‘British-Irish champions’ depending on your preference)…;)

Yes I’ve conveniently forgotten about Rangers…but it’s not like the SPL is a proper league is it;)

  • Valenciano

While I think it’s fine that Liverpool should be allowed to defend their title, I find it more disgraceful that England actually has FIVE teams in a so-called Champions league! What a farce. I think there are 52 countries in UEFA so they should just have the champions of each, the holders and the runners up from the top 11 or 12 countries to make the numbers up to 64. None of this lucky losers qualifying for UEFA Cup rubbish either. Of course for financial reasons that isn’t going to happen.

Before they started the nonsense of having runners-up in, back in the mid 90s, they automatically allowed the champs to defend their title so this is simply a reversion to previous rules although they should never have changed the rule in the first place.

I think Shelbourne well beat the Glens but it’s not a foregone conclusion.

  • Paul

    Mike
I don’t think the bookies will be too worried about that treble of results coming up 😉

The draw for the UEFA Cup has also taken place…
    http://www.uefa.com/live/Competitions/UEFACup/draw/2005.QR/draw_basic.html

Longford TFC vs Carmarthen from Wales

    oh and…
    Ekranas vs Cork
    Linfield vs Ventspils
    Viking vs Portadown

  • Martin Dub

Shelbournes attempts to do a “Chelsea” on the League of Ireland have failed so far this year, go on Glentoran!

  • Keith M

Just a little summary of this thread….

Keith M says “..this is certainly a good draw for Shelbourne getting a team as weak as Glentoran and a guaranteed full house.”

Ricardo says “Dunno about that keith…I’d say over two legs the shels will take it, but it won’t be easy.”

smcgiff says “Don’t know about Glentoran’s form, but Shels have no reason to feel overly confident.”

and best of all (posted 3 times):
redpaul says “Keith M. Your football analysis is worse than your poltical ones!”

The result of the tie for those who missed it….
    Glentoran : 2
    Shelbourne : 6
    (Shelbourne’s easiest win in Europe).

It’s a good job my football analysis IS worse that my political one.

I wonder if slugger can get a group rate on humble pie?
