Slugger as graffiti board…

In the last few days I’ve had to pull over 100 posts off the site. Why? Well, aside from one specific libellous accusation, most contained nothing more controversial than knockabout banter/abuse between commenters, and occasionally against a public figure. So why take them down? Simply because they ignored the only rule we have here on Slugger: play the ball not man.

Contrary to popular belief this is not save the blushes of readers or other commenters. Rather it is to ensure that conversations contain readable substance. It also ensures that inveterate political opponents have a reliable forum in which they can engage safely and combatively with each other.

Slugger may fulfill a public need, but it is not obliged to serve every need. If you want to vent spleen about Gerry Adams, Ian Paisley, or (as seems to be the case for a lot of individuals recently) the Republic’s Minister of Justice, then take it somewhere, anywhere else!! *Reaches for his customised, leather bound Yellow and Red Card folder*

In the meantime, Slugger is open 24/7 for any ball players who want to talk politics/culture/sport!

    Mick,

“In the last few days I’ve had to pull over 100 posts off the site.”

Did you really HAVE to pull them off or was there an element of free will involved?

How about a “Vent Your Spleen” thread ?

    Mick,

I’m copying my post from the Gerry Adams thread here to get your response:

    Mick Fealty,

This thread throws me back into the same state of confusion I’ve expressed elsewhere. Since it is about Gerry Adams, how do you post without talking about “the man?” The word “Adams” and/or “Gerry” appears in every post so far. Where’s “the ball?” In fact, what’s “the ball” in this thread?

Paraphrases old joke – on being told he is to be pulled off at half time, new player says: “At my last club we only got an orange.”

    Alan McD:

“…it is about Gerry Adams, how do you post without talking about “the man?”

Mostly there’s a lot of latitude in the way people interpret the rule. I don’t want Slugger to become dry and dusty, and completely devoid of passion. And there’s a danger it could if people take my appeal to its literal end.

But I feel I have to step in more often now because there’s been a lot of: “ah don’t listen to that oul’ b******, he’s a unionist/republican/revisionist and doesn’t know what he’s talking about”.

I’m also reluctant to illustrate, in case it’s taken as some kind of directive over what’s good and what’s bad. But in general attacking what a man says is obviously different to attacking him.

I must take a look and see if I’ve been neglecting that that thread.

Lastly, I don’t want to strip anybody’s work out. And I don’t as a rule. But this attacking the man stuff is slowly and invidiously becoming the rule rather than the exception.

I’d guess the point is that one should be attacking his politics rather than the man himself. Or if tackling the man then it should be actual critisicm rather than just venting hatred at him as the odd few here do.
