Slugger as graffiti board…

In the last few days I’ve had to pull over 100 posts off the site. Why? Well, aside from one specific libellous accusation, most contained nothing more controversial than knockabout banter/abuse between commenters, and occasionally against a public figure. So why take them down? Simply because they ignored the only rule we have here on Slugger: play the ball not man.

Contrary to popular belief this is not save the blushes of readers or other commenters. Rather it is to ensure that conversations contain readable substance. It also ensures that inveterate political opponents have a reliable forum in which they can engage safely and combatively with each other.

Slugger may fulfill a public need, but it is not obliged to serve every need. If you want to vent spleen about Gerry Adams, Ian Paisley, or (as seems to be the case for a lot of individuals recently) the Republic’s Minister of Justice, then take it somewhere, anywhere else!! *Reaches for his customised, leather bound Yellow and Red Card folder*

In the meantime, Slugger is open 24/7 for any ball players who want to talk politics/culture/sport!

We are reader supported. Donate to keep Slugger lit!

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported. Help us keep Slugger independent by becoming a friend of Slugger. While we run a tight ship and no one gets paid to write, we need money to help us cover our costs.

If you like what we do, we are asking you to consider giving a monthly donation of any amount, or you can give a one-off donation. Any amount is appreciated.
