How inconsiderate.. indeed

Reading this RTE report you’d think they had got an exclusive – No IRA statement before election says Adamsnot so guys. But, in fairness they tried, and some of the comments made by Gerry Adams in the This Week interview are more revealing than he might have wished. In particular, that the timing of his speech was “unfortunate”.. what with the Pope dying, and then the funeral, a British Royal Wedding and, of course, a General Election.. [distracting the media and the public’s attention away from his speech, presumably].. I mean, really.. how inconsiderate..

It’s, arguably, worth listening to the end for another revealing moment [about 9 minutes in] and the reason why everyone else saw that speech as electioneering.

Adams is speaking about how Sinn Féin will perform in the election –

We[Sinn Féin] need every single vote.. and er.. in terms of the initiative I’ve taken[that’s the speech he’s referring to BTW], I also want to, at the end of this election, to demonstrate that there’s support for that. I want to be able to stand as we move into an entirely new phase of our history to stand able to demonstrate to others that, broadly speaking, people out there support what we are trying to do.

Ah yes.. destination Sugar Candy Mountain.. all aboard?

  • John O’Connell

Is it true that Gerry regards himself as not just the Sinn Fein president, but the true President of Ireland, All-Ireland, no less?

Is that why he comes out with this weird serious tone when asking people to accept that he’s asking the IRA to disband – the same IRA who told him to F*** off in Short Strand?

    Clearly the man’s delusional.

  • Jim Bob

Where’s the electioneering in that statement you’ve quoted?

He’s quite clearly saying that he wants to demonstrate to the IRA that there is support for his approach.

  • Tiny

Jim Bob “He’s quite clearly saying that he wants to demonstrate to the IRA that there is support for his approach.”

He is clearly bluffing intending to keep the IRA for the next round of talks, the question is talks with whom?

  • Jim Bob

I’m talking about what he’s actually saying above, because Pete Baker has claimed that those words show evidence of electioneering. In themselves they don’t. That’s what I was pointing out.

Whether he’s lying, bluffing or whatever else is a different matter. It’s not an assumption you can make based on what he said above though.

  • John O’Connell

I’ve just watched the RTE 1 News and there was Gerry Adams, sitting in all his glory, with a very fashionable – for an upper class farmer or aristocrat – sleeveless body warmer. It’s a long way from Ballymurphy to here, says he.

Lord Falls of Betraying-his-own-class comes to mind.

I know Mick allows a little man tackling when it comes to the Shinners. Nevertheless, the line must be drawn at the outrageous fashion bitchery of John O’Connell. What would Queen JC have said if poor old Gerry had turned up wearing an off the peg Marks&Sparks little number? Oh, the shame.

    Sleeveless body warmers

    Come on

    Get out more

  • franc

I hear Mark Durkan’s ordered one.

  • Levitas

John its probably more fashionable than a strait-jacket 🙂

  • Mick

Barney, surely I’m allowed a little time with my family?

Mr O’Connell has some serious form in this regard. John, pull in your horns, or you’ll be seeing yellow very quickly.

  • Mick

PS, if you see some tackling of man rather than ball, please let me or Gonzo know asap! I can’t deal with offences if they are not brought to my attention.

With the best will in the world I cannot be on the pitch (so to speak) for 24 hours in the day.

  • barney

    Mick,

That wasn’t meant as a crticism of you. Well not much anyway. The truth is, I like those personal comments. I know they don’t advance the debate or anything but they can be very informative and entertaining. Apart from making the offender look like a dick.
