Following from a comment by Mick I wanted to raise the issue of the absence of Nationalist leaning publications in a free on-line format.
While all the broadly Unionist press is free online, outside the Derry Journal the main players in the Nationalist press are subscription only. We get access to an occasional piece from the Irish News via John at the excellent Nuzhound, we can sometimes read Danny Morrison’s opinion pieces from the ATN but the main thrust of Nationalist press is locked safely up online under a pay per view system. As Mick mentioned this has eliminated the Irish News as discussion piece on the internet, if you don’t get the paper copy you can’t read unless you pay. The Andersontown News has even less online coverage. Nationalist opinion and discussion is curtailed on internet sites such as this as a result. Stories are linked to that should have a nationalist slant or editorial via the prism of the Unionist, British or Irish establishment press. Other publications manage to make it financially viable to provide free online content, why can’t the major players in Nationalist leaning journalism?
