Greed

The Irish Independent has several articles on NIB banking scandal. Phrases such as “Culture of Greed “ follow an Inspector’s report. There may be criminal charges. This latest outrage follows other scandals. But does this culture of greed not reflect the ethos of the Celtic Tiger and the change in Ireland at an individual level to a more materialist society whose members’ priorities are personal wealth and advancement? Was it not inevitable that greed and crime would follow the arrival of big business and it’s commercial practices ? Greed seems to permeate all levels of society- from the hotel reported as adding €270 to a wedding reception bill for folding table napkins to benefit fraud and dishonest Insurance claims. Who is to blame for rip-off Ireland? Can we expect honesty and good practice from our institutions when we ourselves show the same flaws? To quote the bible – What profits a man if he gains the world and loses his soul ?
