Negotiations: loitering in the corridor

We seem to be in one of those increasingly familiar (and seemingly endless) corridor moments, where we all seem to be stuck outside the door in which the real deals are happening, each trying to guess what is really going on, and no one sure. We seem caught in suspended animation between the Ceasefire moment and the full on government moment.

It is eminently possible that it will take at least a full ten years between the calling of the IRA’s ceasefire in August 1994 and the beginning proper of a genuinely popular new dispensation. Current reports go from downplaying expectations to pressing for more urgency. Trimble and Adams are expected to continue (subs needed) their series of meetings tomorrow.

For over 20 years, Slugger has been an independent place for debate and new ideas. We have published over 40,000 posts and over one and a half million comments on the site. Each month we have over 70,000 readers. All this we have accomplished with only volunteers we have never had any paid staff.

Slugger does not receive any funding, and we respect our readers, so we will never run intrusive ads or sponsored posts. Instead, we are reader-supported.
