With the passage of the new policing bill in Westminster, the SDLP have come out solidly in favour of young Nationalists joining the PSNI. Brian Walker reports:
Speaking in a debate on the new Policing bill to implement the SDLP demand for community based policing, the party’s former deputy leader Seamus Mallon warned against a repetition of “little deals in the past done at one minute to midnight.”
Welcoming the new Bill for “unlocking the constitutional log-jam” caused by Peter Mandelson’s Police Act 2000, the SDLP “now had the courage to ask young people to join the police – no ifs, no buts, just do it.”
That would appear to put some clear green water between themselves and Sinn Fein.
