Let us know what you think of the proposed Slugger redesign…

These days about 50% of users to Slugger are accessing the site on a phone or tablet. The current design is a bit clunky so we have gotten the crayons out and rejigged the layout to make the site easier to read.

We know users hate change so we have not done anything drastic. Basically we removed a lot of the clutter, added more white space and made the fonts bigger to make posts more readable.

You can view the proposed new design here…

Have a look and let us know what you think.

The content on the test site is not up to date. Nor are all the features like latest commented posts working. Just look at the general design and give your views.

Bigger fonts are appreciated by those of us with impaired sight.

Hi Brian – does anyone use the navigation? I would steal some vertical space from the header and nav and horizontal space from the right side bar. Overall I would be trying to maximise space for the story area and within that the stories run into each other a bit too much so maybe a horizontal spacer could be added between articles.

A cleaner look with a bigger font, nothing too radical, more room for supporting ads ( not too strident !). My quibble with the previous was too fine a font which was especially hard to read in italics. This is an improvement. But I take it that the nice pics in some posts were added specially for the dummy to enhance the appearance. Good thought but I don’t suppose that will be a regular feature of the design. Well done, Brian!

Can I request that the RSS feed reverts to the full articles? 🙂

  • Declan Doyle

    Love it

  • chrisjones2

    Looks great.

  • Declan Doyle

Oh ! Can we have a limit on the amount of links/cut and pasting allowed?

  • Jollyraj

Strictly a layman in the IT – but looks good to me. Keep ‘er lit boys!

  • Jollyraj

“Can we have a limit on the amount of links/cut and pasting allowed?”

I disagree – it was ever thus 🙂 – I think the links/ C&P lend more depth and texture to the debate.

I don’t know if it’s the test site but it seems a bit slower to load otherwise nice!

On most browsers, try pushing the Ctrl key and rolling the mouse wheel.
If you’re on a phone instead of a PC I have no idea what might work

  • Granni Trixie

Thanks Reader – I’m sometimes on PC but most usually on iPad – where I can use fingers to make fonts expand – which is a bit of a pain to do in a sustained way.

Hmm seems to only benefit a minority users, can we be sure no wetlands will be harmed? It’s important.

  • Brian O’Neill

I can confirm no wetlands will be harmed in the new site.

  • Brian O’Neill

Yeah speed will be just as zippy. Faster actually.

  • Brian O’Neill

We thought it was reducing our reader count. What RSS system are you using?

  • Brian O’Neill

Yes the big images are for photo, video and cartoon posts. We plan move content to make the site a bit more diverse.

  • Brian O’Neill

Yeah I have plans for a new menu structure, it is in the works. I actually removed the line between posts. I will look at it again.

  • AndyB

I use RSS Master – and right enough, with the full article available I don’t need to click through 🙂

  • mickfealty

No, but whining about hyperlinks (which you in no way obliged to follow) might just get you bucked off the site. 🙂

  • Declan Doyle

Well that wouldnt surprise anyone ????????

  • nilehenri

i miss the burgundy background. it gave the page a comfortable french aristocratic feel.
