Slugger News Hangout: Take 2…

Hope I can get thing started this time, we’re going to take a second go at having an open HangOut on Google Plus… Very much a work in progress, today we’ve the Giant’s Causeway Young Earthist story… You should be able to pick up it from my profile page here… But we’ll let know here when/if we can get this thing to work…

  • Well, if it wasn’t in working hours, I would have taken part.

  • Mick Fealty

    yep. ideal times?

  • Mister_Joe

Do let us know what happened, Mick. Might it help if someone else such as myself tried to host the event?

  • Mick Fealty

Happily we had none of the tech problems we experienced last time Joe. I’m very keen to keep these sessions going through the summer because I’d like to use them more formally in the autumn.

Been looking at another technology called Spreecast too, which is less complex to use.

  • John Ó Néill

Timing is the problem – maybe 1-2 pm Friday flagged up on a Monday? I suppose the asynchronous pattern most users are familiar with means breaking a fifth wall to go live. I could try rolling out a web-conferencing session via Elluminate if neither G+ or Spreecast works. I’ve not deployed it outside our own staff/students but the facility is there.

  • I only got a couple of hours notice on it and in the present climate sitting down for a non-work related chin wag is not the wisest thing to be caught doing 9-5. Couple of hours after work or at the weekend would be good for me with a day’s notice?

  • Mick Fealty

Is a Friday lunchtime good for everyone else? Bring a sandwich, and we could call it Slugger’s digital lunch…

Last week Google brought events into the stream so it’s possible (I think) to set a recurring event up for a Friday lunchtime that people could sign up to and get reminders.

It’s so experimental in there that even people who’ve been running hangouts since they started late last year are playing catch up with new developments..

But I could do with more Slugger based collaborators in there… who’d be prepared to help me explore hangouts and other G+ tools as valuable communicative and a business tools…

You should be able to pick this piece I put in my own Google Plus Stream (I think I marked it public): to get a better sense of where I’m going with all of this…

If there are specific things you would like checked out, I would be willing to have a look for you.

  • Mick Fealty

Thanks Joe… Will let you know…
