Condemning homophobic prejudice (so long as it is from a unionist)…

In case you don’t see it, here’s Newton Emerson’s take on the week’s news over at the Detail… Of particular note it is unacceptable for an ageing Unionist peer to say what the Catholic Church in fact believes on the issue of homosexuality… [No, no, no that’s okay, because 70% of Catholics don’t actually believe what they say they do… – Ed]

Peer, is the key word. There’s only one church that can attempt to block legislation aimed at giving equal rights to gay couples, and they don’t spell catholic with a big C.

“There’s only one church that can attempt to block legislation aimed at giving equal rights to gay couples, and they don’t spell catholic with a big C”

You haven’t seen what the Catholic Church is Scotland has been pushing for then????

All of them can ‘attempt to block it”

Lords Spiritual sit permanently on the government side because they are the most loyal peers to the sovereign. Constitutionally they have as much scope to strike this law down does as Sean Brady has in defying Benedict.

  • Mick Fealty

just to add… any ennobled clerics not within the UK Anglican communion are not so encumbered…

    ah..

  • I wonder if Ken Maginnis is aware that his sovereign liege lady HM Queen Elizabeth 2 has already given the royal assent to equality in marriage. She did so in Canada in 2005.

I wonder what he thinks of her for doing that. I mean she heads up a church, that’s more than he does.

Has Ken passed the best before date?

If gay marriage will have a detrimental effect on existing marriage then the signs of that detrimental effect will be clearly visible in Canada today who have had equal marriage since 2005 nationwide and 90% of Canada since 2003. Can he/anyone point to Canada and show me/everyone in the UK evidence of this detrimental damage. I asked a prominent vocal politician/celebrity by email this question 2 months ago, I am still waiting for a reply. I suspect I will be waiting this time next year for a reply

rhetoric is abundant, facts are not.
