UTV on the race for #Aras11

Good round up from UTV on the #Aras11 race… First prize for the most strangulated metaphor of the campaign so far goes to Senan Moloney for the reference to Martin McGuinness introducing a little bit of ‘mercury’ which could ’tilt’ the race in a new direction…

Paul Clark talks to Sam Smyth from the Irish Independent who notes that Norris is sucking all the air out of the room…

Newt as ever is on the ball with why (if forced to vote) Unionists would vote for Dana, a quick sample
“2 Dana has murdered several songs, but always on the record.”
“9 Dana has never endorsed, nor been endorsed by, the UDA.”

UTV are the pun champions of the Universe, Ivan Little’s abilty is phenononeneialal.

You should have blogged that one Drumlin…

done, if you want to edit my comment above to just the UTV line thats fine.

I must sat that, while I am not generally overly taken by Newton Emerson’s attempts at satire, I found this piece to be pitch-perfect.

The trick is to have the arrow hit your target dead centre and yet have his supporters applauding your accuracy.

He sure scored a few bull’s- eyes this time.

  • Billy Pilgrim

Indeed, Rory. That’s the best thing Newt has written in a long time. The stuff about the US Christian music scene is brilliant.

‘that everyone else finds a bit mental.’

    I would’nt say that . I’d have said a lot instead of a bit 😉
Good analysis by Sam Smyth . Newt should get plenty of material from this election and ‘cartoonists ‘ should have a field day . Good to see him in form again.

I suppose it’ll help to take our minds off the Greeks and the economy and those other things that don’t really matter and give us a break from that other major national concern the Eugby World Cup where the Italians are ‘greeking ; us out with threats of a spoiler .

  • Greenflag

Apologiesaboe – Eugby was supposed to be the European Nations and Rugby World Cup . I know it’s shorter but not bad for a description of the collective sporting mindset in these challenging times.

  • Back to fundamentals:

a little bit of ‘mercury’ which could ’tilt’ the race in a new direction

Google mercury+disease and you’ll find several early-19th century discussions of how mercury could, should and shouldn’t be administered as a treatment of particularly unpleasant (and often self-inflicted) complaints.

Meanwhile, we have here an object lesson in the real joy of STV: to whom does one award seventh rather than sixth preference?
