Dana & Gay to make a late, late entry to Presidential race?

RTE is carrying a story with regard to speculation that Fianna Fail have attempted to persuade former RTE Presenter, Gay Byrne, to enter the Race to the Aras. Whilst Fianna Fail has refused to speculate, the former presenter refused to comment on the matter during an interview on RTE 2FM. The news comes a day after it emerged that Dana Rosemary Scallon was considering seeking nomination to enter the race.

Didnt Dana stand for the Presidency once before? When Mary McAleese was first elected? Wasnt aware that Gaybo was a political animal but The Irish Times last year described him as “the most influential radio and television person in the history of The Irish State”. Thats probably an accurate description. He could well attract a lot of votes.

  • He’s always acted like he was the president so shouldn’t be too much of a leap for him!

Dana, again? I thought she had gone away. Too right wing, not perhaps that that matters in the Presidency but still.

Gay? Influential, possibly but showbiz again.

Is this the best we can do, what, has everyone else emigrated? Twas ever thus..

I would still prefer either Jedward or Dustin the Turkey to either of these two.

    Gay Byrne, dear God no.
What a terrible group of runners. Time for someone to think outside the box, and fast.

I agree with Rory. Since the President has very few responsibilities and no power at the end of the day, he or she doesn’t need to be a politician. Actually better not.

    Cute title, Chris; ..late late..

    Micháel O Muircheartaigh.
    Gorgeous person.

I note from Wiki that, in order to run you have to:

    be nominated by:

    * At least twenty serving members of the Oireachtas (parliament), or
    * At least four county or city councils, or
    * Him- or herself (in the case of an incumbent or former president that has served one term).

That is ridiculous. You should be able to run under nomination by a significant number of the public, say 25,-50,000 on a petition.

Gay Mitchell, Gay Byrne but no gay Norris.

Gay by name – good. Gay by nature – bad

At least Dustin really is a turkey. Isn’t he?

The people in Turkey are pleased that Columbus was looking for India, not their country. Or maybe the ones who are pleased are the N.A. aborigines.

Why not the woman who actually broke the mould and invite Mary Robinson back?

“Why not the woman who actually broke the mould and invite Mary Robinson back?”

Brilliant idea she always has been miles ahead of the rest.

“Seán Óg Ó hAilpín…. his father’s from Fermanagh, his mother’s from Fiji, neither one of them a hurling stronghold.”

“I saw a few Sligo people at Mass in Gardiner Street this morning and the omens seem to be good for them, the priest was wearing the same colours as the Sligo jersey! 40 yards out on the Hogan Stand side of the field Ciarán Whelan goes on a rampage, it’s a goal. So much for religion.”

“… and Brian Dooher is down injured. And while he is, I’ll tell ye a little story. I was in Times Square in New York last week, and I was missing the Championship back home. So I approached a newsstand and I said ‘I suppose you wouldn’t have the Kerryman would you?’ To which the Egyptian man behind the counter replied ‘do you want the North Kerry edition or the South Kerry edition?’. He had both, so I bought both. And Dooher is back on his feet…”
