England win ICC Twenty20 World Cup

Congratulations are due to the England cricketers who have just secured their first ever world men’s cricket title at the ICC Twenty20 World Cup in impressive style.  Having won the toss, they restricted Australia to 147 for 6 from their 20 overs.  Then comfortably reached the target of 148 with 7 wickets and 3 overs to spare. Over-by-over coverage here.

Although the majority of the runs came from the bats of Pietersen (47) and Kieswetter (63), in the end the winning runs were struck by captain Paul Collingwood with Eoin Morgan at the non-striker’s end on 15 not out…  But it could all have been so very different…

I wonder what Dara will have to say next week…

How dissapoingting that Australia have been beaten given the extremely strong cultural links between Ireland and Australia and the natural affinity we Irish have with the Aussies.

    Roll on the Ashes.

Excellent performance, though Australia had it coming – they had a miraculous escape in the semi-final against Pakistan. Still think South Africa are the best side in world cricket, in all forms, although this tournament wasn’t their finest hour

  • I don’t suppose we will ever hear the end of it in the largely London centric media.

Incidentally, I have the honour of acting as legal representative and archivist to one Willie Smith of the Shankill Road who died recently after an eventful life. Among his papers is one in which he confesses to being responsible for England winning the football World Cup in 1966. You can read his story on my blog.

  • I thought, hoped, I had heard the last of cricket. I think I will take it personally if it follows me here.

I surprised Baker the little englender even got 7 comments on this keak (how do you actually spell that word). But then 3 or 4 comments were taking the piss, as is only fit and proper.

Good to see an Irishman in the winning team too.

I’ve been following English cricket ever since the early 80’s when Botham practically detroyed the aussies sngle handed to win the Ashes.

I certainly don’t think it’s keek( if that how you spell it). Sure beats that game of rounders you play in the states.
