Toilet plunger in chief our singular green eyed leader

It is usually the Slugger boss that does blog round-ups but I’m sure Mick is too modest to link Danny Morrison’s entry from Sunday:

Finished ‘Slaughterhouse-Five’ by Kurt Vonnegut around Sunday lunchtime; then visited my mom and her friends, Mary and Sarah, in Grovetree House; came home and read a limited amount of Sunday Shit online by the anoraks led by the key Tralfamadorian, Mick Fealty, who has broken cover, recently calling for Adams to go, and is now a political player, not a facilitator/moderator

Note via wiki: “In the novel Slaughterhouse-Five, protagonist Billy Pilgrim reports that the Tralfamadorians look like upright toilet plungers with a hand on top, into which is set a single green eye”

  • Henry94

and is now a political player, not a facilitator/moderator

    As is his right.

  • Excellent – must dust off my copy of Vonnegut’s novel and give it a read to find these upright toilet plungers!

Of course, his book of short stories “Welcome to the Monkey House” might be a more apt description for Slugger!

  • Ulick

An even better description of their home world:

In Slaughterhouse-Five, Tralfamadore is the home to beings who exist in all times simultaneously, and are thus privy to knowledge of future events, including the destruction of the universe at the hands of a Tralfamadorian test pilot. They kidnap Billy Pilgrim, the protagonist of the novel, and place him in a zoo on Tralfamadore with Montana Wildhack, an actress in pornographic films.

Astute observation by Danny but who’s the porn star?

  • FitzjamesHorse

“and is now a political player, not a facilitator/moderator”

I tend to agree with Henry94.
But surely all the local journos are “players” (Breen, O’Doherty) so it is more “dog bites man” than “man bites dog” to add Mr Fealty to the list.

  • Scaramoosh

As a fan of Herman Hesse’s Knulp, DM must know that Man must express himself in order to find his own nature….

Having said that, I have heard speculation that Mick may turn out to be the surprise candidate in Reg’s new army …

  • Alias

That sounds like Mick is now a legitimate target for ad hominem punishment beatings. 😉

He sounds very bitter and angry, doesn’t he? Still, I’d probably be just as bitter if my face attracted as many flies as Danny’s does.

  • Comrade Stalin

Ridiculous hearing this coming from Danny Morrison whose forum was run with an iron fist with all criticism of the exalted one being suppressed. He’s just sore that the news agenda is increasingly being set by blogs.

  • Don’t be daft. Blogs don’t set news agendas.
Name one major story that a blog has set?
Wise up man, people on here are nowhere near as important or informed as they think.

  • Alias

True, but if, as a couple of posters on this thread have suggested, all media has an agenda, then whose agenda are the British media pushing when they provide cover for the Shinners? Has the British media suddenly converted to promoting an Irish nationalist agenda from their historical role of servility to British national interests or is it the case that the Shinners now enjoy the protection of the British media because they are promoting a British nationalist agenda?

  • Kevsterino

Wow, Alias, a wee bit Machiavellian there.

  • RepublicanStones

‘facilitator’ sounds like someone who would pack John Gotti’s car boot for him. Anyway, the level of scaremongering round these parts these days…you’d be forgiven for thinking this place is going to end up like Dresden.

Morrison nose is so far up its tickling Grizzly’s appendix.

P.S whatever happened to the commenter Billy Pilgrim?

  • Stephen Ferguson

Another Shinner that doesn’t read the Sunday papers either then…

Newsagents might as well not open on the Lords Day up the West.

Only just seen this. I prefer this home baked definition from the urban dictionary:

“Actually a type of living creature in Kurt Vonegut’s book Slaughterhouse 5. They can move to any point in the space time continuum and prefer to exist in nice places/times with happy stuff going on.

“The comparison of human experience in reality with Tralfamadorian experience of reality was a beautiful paragraph by Kurt: (I paraphrase)

“Imagine a person on the top of a mountain with a nice view (Tralfamadorian view of the universe), another person is strapped to a train track with a metal sphere around their head and an 8 foot pole to look through… That small round circle of light at the end is the human experience of the universe.

“I would give my left nut to understand nature as a Tralfamadorian.”

The original reads as nicely played, back-handed compliment from Danny… But then I would say that preferring nice things and places with happy stuff going on… 😉

I still stand by that CIF piece in the summer, btw… and nothing that has happened since has persuaded me otherwise…

On the business of blogs and journalism… well, colour me sceptical too… This about sums my thinking up on the relationship between common or garden blogging:

As for agendas, I don’t give a damn one way or the other. I try to follow my nose and encourage others to follow theirs. Some good stuff comes out, some bad.

  • Dread Cthulhu

Double Standards: “Don’t be daft. Blogs don’t set news agendas. Name one major story that a blog has set?”

I know blogs have upset no shortage of stories, such as the “Killian papers” re: Bush in the National Guard. The fella over at LGF came up with one simple graphic that blew the “story” out of the water, along with Dan Rather’s career.

  • Jimmy_Sands

Odd. You normally expect chuckies to respond so much better to criticism.

    From the same blog:

“8th January. At comedy night…was there for Andrew Maxwell, an extremely funny, witty, intelligent comedian who had several goes at Iris Robinson and Gerry Adams over Gerry’s brother Liam. Had a ‘light’ discussion with him later about the nature of humour and what is permissible;”

  • Isn’t Danny actually a bath plunger??

  • DC – What have been the big local stories of 2010?
Iris Robinson affair – broke by Spotlight
Robinson resigns – broke by TV
    Peadar Heffron – TV again
Gerry Admas/Liam Adams – Sunday Tribune

People on here who think Slugger sets the news agenda are kissing their own holes.
This is a great wee blog for opinion, gossip and the odd bit of news, but nothing else. Don’t kid yourself.

You missed Eamonn’s story on the Hatfield Hall…

    Night all…

  • Pete Baker

“read a limited amount of Sunday Shit online by the anoraks led by the key Tralfamadorian, Mick Fealty”

Was it something we said, Danny?

  • jtwo

Yes but Eamonn’s wages are actually paid by old-media DTR.

  • Slugger O’Toole Admin

I hate to break this to you, but no one’s wages are paid for by their blogging on Slugger. Not even mine!

  • Henry94

    ’cause it’s a hobby not a job.

In the old days people with minority political agendas would print out sheets on Gestetners and give them out on the street.

  • Henry94 – good news is that with the launch of Newspaper Club it’ll soon be possible to print your own newspaper freesheet and hand it out!

I have found it odd for several years that a writer has a blog and does not let people discuss issues. Usually writers love to have people discuss but danny is no longer one of them. Of course he loves to write and TELL people what he thinks and then the masses are to silently agree and blindly support adams/mcguiness with the understanding no one is keener or more politically astute than danny morrison. I speak from being a member of his blog and then being banned only after the members were allowed for days to berate and verbally attack me and my character. I also found it tasteless that the moderator of his blog went by the term-‘governor-(prison warden) and members who were allowed to be moderators were called, ‘screws’ (term the republicans called prison guards). Since danny was the trustee of the Bobby Sands Trust and Bobby sands was beaten by the ‘screw’s and he died in prison…I felt it was extremely tacky and in bad form. Of course I was told I did not understand and they were just having a wee bit of fun. Danny morrison has made a comfortable living being the head of the northern ireland fetival and using his connection to the bobby sands trust fund to further his career. Recently I emailed danny and suggested he resign from the trust and let someone who cares about bobby sands to run it…like maybe Bobby’s son or someone else. As we can see…danny doesn’t want to give up his prestige and all he gets from it as a member of the trust.

Bangers to the rescue. His reading is behind the times. He should have read all that lightweight stuff light years ago when he was banged up.

Terrible the way he was shafted when they were going to nut the junior tout. That’s politics.

Please note he refers dismissively to bloggers as anoraks and their work as shit. Leopards and bone breakers do not change their thuggish spots.

  • Paddy

Bangers’ uncle was Harry White, a top IRA man. From good IRA stock is Danny, just like Gerry Adams MP.

  • Paddy

Slugger is rannked 193,168 on alexa, 1,165 in Ireland
    Danny Bangers is ranked 11,252,032.

‘He’s just sore that the news agenda is increasingly being set by blogs’

Near spat the tea out reading that!!.

Confirmation if nothing else of how miguided the hacks on Slugger are in their belief that they are in some way opinion formers or relevant to the lives of the everyday Joe public.

  • Funny – I dusted off my copy of Slaughterhouse Five and read it after this post, and then discovered that Linen Hall Library was using it for their April Book Club. Fascinating discussion – didn’t throw any light on Slugger or Mick, but was a good experience. Weird book all the same.

    Spot on, mate.

If anything confirmed the utter irrelevance of Slugger O’Toole it was this election.

Months upon months of anti-SF bile and the site ends up with egg on its face.

Opinion shapers? Don’t make me laugh.

More like the same 20 or so bitter geeks who don’t get out enough.

Mick, t’internet was a ‘cool’ thing about 9 years ago. But it’s mundane now. It’s a way of life, another tool. You’re not ‘wowing’ anyone with New Media. You’re not shaping opinion. People on the ground do that.
