Alliance Ard Fheis

Assuming they don’t ban me I’ll be nipping in to the Alliance party conference tomorrow for a while around the time of David Ford’s address (Slugger blogger of the Year AlaninBelfast is kindly offering a lift). Of course media attention will be very much focused on SF’s Ard Comhairle meeting but if anyone wants to suggest questions we can put to the delegates feel free.

  • Comrade Stalin

I’ll see you there, Mark. I’m in the paramilitary wing, so you’ll probably find us out the back drinking shots and lighting farts.

  • granni trixie

Mark and AlininBelfast: It’ll be a great day out. Will be looking out for you.

  • nick

Is Slugger sending anyone to the Sinn Fein Ard Fheis?

  • Mark McGregor

This was a last minute decision and I can’t get hold of Gerry so can one of you pair ensure my name is on a list and they are aware I will not be giving over any money to get in.

  • Mark McGregor

I’d be tempted to go ;0)

afaik Slugger has never covered it and that is a bit of a failing but remember Mick has to cover things like that out of his own pocket.

  • granni trixie

Mark: will do re getting in.

  • Taking bets on seeing Ian Parsley hanging around the back of the room!

  • Rory Carr

I expect that David’s end-of-conference address might echo David Steele’s 1981 exhortation to Alliance’s big sister* party, “Go home and prepare for government!” (or at least a little foothold in government for one Alliance representative. Possibly.)

    * More accurately, “Big sister’s blouse of a party”.

  • granni trixie

Im in the Labour wing of APNI Rory, insult the Lib Dems all you like.

  • Scaramoosh

“Why waste so much time, energy and money, drinking tea on the Malone Road (and other such roads in Bangor, Helens Bay, Cultra and Hollywood) and chasing lost causes?”

  • Rory Carr

Would that be like the Alliance Young Marxists, Trixie?

  • Mark McGregor

I’ll let Alan ask that one.

  • granni trixie

Scaramoosh: The aspiration to have a stable, fair NI, not one run on a sectrarian lines is a fine one.Which other party prioritises on this goal?
Its better to join in and work towards this, especially during the violent times than sit on your butt…even on the Malone Rd etc (inverted snobbery going on here?)

  • Scaramoosh on – I suppose you could rephrase it as “Is Alliance a middle class party in its appeal if not so exclusively in its policies and actions?”

That mightn’t wind them up so much or make them choke on their hot fork buffet. (Wonder is it an all you can eat?)

  • Mark McGregor

At £9.50 that ‘hot fork buffet’ may be something special. Like a buffet of fish suppers in baps. And I seriously have no idea what a ‘hot fork buffet’ is. Does it involve ‘hot forks’?

I’ll go for not having the £7.50 soup and sandwich and get some shots with the fart lighters.

  • granni trixie

CRC and other research has criticised, “The middle classes” for standing idly by whilst the country was in turmoil,in particular for politely not naming the problem of sectarianism in order to tackle it. So if people from m. class areas join in the work of Allince, good for them in my book.

  • Nah, usually luke warm sausage rolls and cocktail sausages!

  • granni trixie – a good start. So would it be even better to see representation from all arts and parts. I’ve an open mind, maybe I’ll be overwhelmed and impressed tomorrow!

  • Mark McGregor

So, the first lie is exposed. We will not be given ‘hot forks’ despite the claims. Thats an exclusive.

  • Do you really want the Dunadry’s logo branded onto your fingertips as a memento? I’m sure they could heat the forks up specially for you sir!

But we should stick with it being a lie and maybe someone will threaten legal actions against our comments 🙂 Wouldn’t want it to turn into a safe and frivolous thread.

  • Mark McGregor

A question on their seeming restricted demographic seems good.

One on the P&J Ministry is a must.

Any one going to suggest something else?

  • FitzjamesHorse

So no “Slugger” journo at SF Conference.
Heaven forfend that journalists would have to pay their own way. 🙂

  • heamaisbharney

    * More accurately, “Big sister’s blouse of a party”. rory carr

Sisters and blouses, mmm, somehow many would be more likely to think of sinn fein at the moment when such a phrase is uttered.

  • West Sider

hope you put them right about proper revolutionary politics. They wear nice clothes so perhaps you can suggest suitable attire for crawling under cars.

  • Hot ‘fork handles’ for when the lights go out, Mark 🙂

  • FitzjamesHorse

Fork handles…….oh I thought you said FOUR CANDLES!!!

Turns out that I have blagged a lift to Dunadry tomorrow but I am not sure if that gets me entry into the Holy of Holies. Probably have to buttonhole somebody.
To be honest I a more interested in the “mood music”.
Strikes me that earlier in the week the AP might have been looking forward to a triumphalist conference where Forde would be hailed or seen as a new Minister…making the party nearly relevant.

Now all of a sudden Davey has to tell his Party that he wont be getting a job, salary and limo……of course he will let the DUP & SF know the full force of his anger/petulance.

I better stop now as I might have to be nice to an AP member tomorrow.
