Black arts of political PR best kept behind a veil…

This from Bobballs… when things are going wrong it never happens in ones… DUP man tries to fix online poll…

  • joeCanuck

I’d like to see an on-line poll asking people what they think of on-line polls.

They are to be taken with a large dose of salt. People self-selecting can never replace a properly designed poll. There doesn’t seem to be many of those in N.I.

  • Paul

People everywhere do this kind so its nothing new as joe says perhaps we should have a poll asking people what they think off online polls of online polls.a good point joe made in his comments

  • Now this really is a non story.

  • Garza

Paul did you just repost your post? You really are a strange fellow.

  • Mark McGregor

    What is the problem here?

Facebook is about social networks. So some one uses their social network to point out somethng they may want to participate in.

    Big bloody deal.

Unless the call is for people to be apolitical in their social sphere.

Fealty, Bob – catch a grip and give yerselves a shake. Non-story.

  • Paul

Perhaps Bob should look at his surname and think to himself he made a right balls up lol of this non story thread.GET A GRIP BOB FOR GOOD SAKE LOL

  • Mark McGregor

Can I point out a actual MLA has been asking me and many others to help water virtual crops, feed cyber chickens and look for digital eggs on FB. Can’t recall a political entry from him ever. That’s a problem with a politico using social media not this nonsense.

  • Mr Angry

    http://tinyurl.com/yc4gxsp now makes sense!!

  • bobballs

ah guys. No, not a non-story. While not hard news, it’s an interesting one.

John Robinson is the senior press guy at the heart of the biggest sex scandal of the decade here. How he responds to it (the dark arts of PR!) is of interest. This NL poll story is part of that, so I blogged it.

If people are going to see public polls supporting Peter Robinson, why not show how that result was arrived at?

Check out my post – i don’t condemn John, no balls up. i provide the material and leave it open for people to make their own minds up about this. What’s the problem?

  • willis

    Bobballs

“Check out my post – i don’t condemn John”

    “Votail early, votail often!”

Ah yes, I can see how that is either a compliment or neutral. Comparing a DUP flak to the Sinn Fein machine of the nineties. Subtle though, I’ll give you that

  • Garza

“It double posted for some reason Garza i have had trouble with my comp.I know you are a strange fellow too.”

    lol fair enough

  • Carsons Cat

    Bob,
“the biggest sex scandal of the decade here.”

The decade of course, is a grand total of 2 weeks old…..

This is a non-story of someone using social media to push (in a small way) a particular political agenda. Is there a suggestion this guy spent every waking hour of even that day ‘manipulating’ this poll? It seems to have been an email fired out fairly quickly as they’re obviously monitoring what’s gong on online as a way of measuring opinion – whilst also attempting to shape opinion.

“If people are going to see public polls supporting Peter Robinson, why not show how that result was arrived at?”

Sending an email from a facebook group to a couple of hundred groups isn’t exactly secret either…

  • bobballs

Hi Carson’s Cat – You got me there! Without too much of a mental leap, it would easy to see I was talking about the decade we’ve all just lived through (as opposed to the one that’s barely started!).

I was sending up the online poll by installing a poll of my own, and the options on that make the broad point you do. Again, i left it open for people to make their own minds up. Which you’ve done – fair enough!

But i didn’t make any pretence that i’d unearthed something made secret, or i’d sleuthed this one out. Nope. I just came across it, that’s all.

I will disagree on one thing though. It’s not a non-story. The DUP are caught in a maelstrom – this is a story on national and international news. And the DUP’s head media guy is trying to manipulate a minor News Letter poll. This is v small beer. I did wonder whether the DUP had lost control and were micro-managing around the edges of a crisis… instead of thinking strategically. (Hence my advice – which may be obvious but it is honestly meant.)

And if i take your point about it being valid for press people to use social media to talk to people and influence opinion, then you must take mine that it is also valid for social media (my little blog!) to talk to people and ask opinions. Maybe a non-story for MSM, but i do feel it is def one for the social media. So I take your points, but i disagree.

  • Driftwood
  • It would only be manipulation if someone in the news letter was deliberately altering the outcome

the fact that someone highlights the fact that there is an on line poll is a good thing.

  • Belfast Gonzo

Oh give bobballs a break. You can’t name MP’s lovers every day (or delete them afterwards!) Anyway, blogs are tailor made for non-stories; just look at ours!

  • bobballs

Hey Gonzo – Thanks, erm, for those words of support. Wouldn’t want to impose, so don’t leap to my defence too often now!
