Hearts and Minds: “If the will is there we can deliver on Policing and Justice…”

Hearts and Minds… Pretty good panel discussion at the top of the programme.. Alex Maskey puts in a good performance… things not quite as bad as people have may have thought… Ian Junior places the blame for the failure of OFmdFM on Basil McCrea… Alex Attwood blames everyone (including his own party)… Stephen Farry suggests rather sensibly that there needs to be a removal of ‘poison from the system’… A real change of tone compared to what we’ve been hearing in the last few weeks…

Hmmm.. and no contradiction at all between the various parties’ positions now and what they had said.

    Let no-one interfere in that!

Just as well we can’t post the video..

What about the crisis within Sinn Fein over Jennifer McCann’s criticism of Martin Mc Guinness over his failure to ensure a valid and reliable replacement for the 11-plus? The education community have been devoid of confidence in the latest Sinn Fein minister’s handling of the issue and again “no contradiction at all between the various parties’ positions now and what has been said.” Martin failed to warn about a crisis in education. He alone pushed the destruct button.

“A real change of tone compared to what we’ve been hearing in the last few weeks…”

Really? Why then is the deputy making threats this morning about “a full blown crisis” and the institutions being “unsustainable”?

The underlying republican threat to walk remains, indeed the issue has been widened from P&J to “equality and partnership”. The Shinners are playing for an election and any change of tone is the start of their blame strategy.

Ian Junior places the blame for the failure of OFmdFM on Basil McCrea

If someone is able to explain that I’d be most grateful.

Stephen Farry suggests rather sensibly that there needs to be a removal of ‘poison from the system’… A real change of tone compared to what we’ve been hearing in the last few weeks…

Predictably, more sanctimonious crap from the Alliance party. Maybe they’d like to indulge in a change of tone

Actually one of the most mature, reasoned discussions I have heard on Hearts and Minds for some time.

Thompson must have tried half a dozen times to raise the temperature and failed.

Junior did well I thought, as did Attwood. McCrea fared not so well, but nobody shamed themselves and relatively speaking, he is the best UUP performer by a considerable way.

I found it incredibly boring. These politicians on the panel obviously are a little cosy with each other.

Sometimes fur flying isn’t that entertaining.

Anybody informed person watching that would know that Ian Paisley Jnr was being quite disingenuous but he demonstrated considerable skill on obfuscation. There is an issue which is ‘on fire’ – parades. I noticed that word was only used once in the whole 18 minutes of discussion.

I think the BBC will be annoyed with themselves that they had so many representatives on the discussion panel.

The result was that Thompson had no real opportunity to put the spokesmen for the DUP and Sinn Fein under any sort of pressure.
