Did France Cheat?

Time to exert some moral pressure on the French FA, sign the online petition for a replay. By replaying the match, France can take an opportunity to progress to the World Cup fairly, with their heads held high. By backing a call for a replay Thierry Henry can restore his battered reputation.

Petition for a replay

Update:

Kiss good bye to your afternoon – relive the highs and lows of Wednesday’s match.

Hand of Gaul – The Game

The poor Irish. Always the victim. No one else has ever suffered from a bad decision, right lads?

  • oneill

The reason you were playing the French in the first place is that FIFA wanted them (and Portugal) not you (nor Bosnia nor Slovenia) in the WC Finals- nothing personal purely business reasons.

Let’s presume the French FA, in a spirit of Gallic-Celtic entente cordialle, agree to the request. There is as much chance then of FIFA, who will have to give the final authority on this, acceding to a rematch as there is of the Scouse winning the Premiership this year.

  • are you out of your mind? this game shouldnt be replayed. Henry should be punished but the game’s result should stand.

I’ve lost count of how many times i’ve felt my side cheated by bad refereeing – which is what it was in the end.

wind your collective necks in. its the euros soon.

    Mack,

re. “Time to exert some moral pressure on the French FA, sign the online petition for a replay”

I’ve got an even better idea lets just turn up at the tournament anyway, our players could disguise themselves at spectators and when France take the pitch they could throw away their disguises and the boys in green could rush on to the pitch and refuse to leave unless they get to play half the game. It would be as if we shared qualification and perhpas both teams could proceed then through the tournament playing half a game each.

Or perhpas we should just petition the French FA about qualification sharing and we could get a few more ministers out in France on expenses rather then running the country.

Has Liam Brady taken to the serious early morning pop? I heard him on Radio 5 this morning and he sounded worse than the red-fellah who was leader of the Lib Dems who lost his job for excessive pop taking.

Pethaps Keane ought to be publically executed in Dublin Castle for that shocking miss – I tried it myself in the garden this morning and I knocked it in between the two flower pots 10 times out of 10.

Wow check this one out too:

You see there is more that unites us than divides us, eh?

  • Too hilarious.

  • joeCanuck

Life is hard; then you die.
    Get over it.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    DC,

I wonder what the support in Ireland for a petition on that one would have been?

  • exile

6county: have you heard anyone, whether on Slugger or elsewhere, remotely suggested that? Your relentless commitment to mopery is almost admirable.

  • Not a matter of life or death…

UltImately it’s a professional tragedy for Henry, who like Maradona before him will now be remembered for cheating rather than footballing brilliance.

  • Paisley Lives

Actually, it is not a bad result for the GAA. The soccer lot had their hearts broken, the IRFU stand proud and David Vance and his ilk preach Trick or Treat.

Still, I think banning French kissing is taking things a bit too far.

  • 6countyprod

Of course the Irish were hard done by, but life goes on…

I’ll have to be on my best behaviour this weekend when I visit some relatives in the South. It’s going to be tough keeping a straight face, though.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    6countyprod,

would you anticipate an increase in the sales of Henry shirts in certain parts of the Northern Irish territories?

  • Doctor Who

If the moderator is going to censor posts willy nilly, why not just close this ridiculous thread.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    Doctor Who,

perhaps we can have a petition to have your words of wisdom re-instated?

  • 6countyprod

Yea, Dr Who, let’s have a replay. This time play fair, and none of your old nasty stuff!

“country over club every time”, he rants….standing there in his Chelsea shirt.

  • Rory Carr

Of course had Ireland won the match as a result of an unfair advantage taken after a deliberate infringement by an Irish player that went unseen by the referee we would not be having all this malarkey now, would we?

As to the critique of the disputed Henry goal given by an Irish Chelsea supporter well…an Irish Chelsea supporter, I ask you…critical credentials collapse upon that very designation.

  • Billy from rathcoole

Wind ya necks in will ya… The refs decision is final.
Couldnt imagine the ROI fans demanding a replay if it was kean o that done the dirty deed could you ???

    Viva La France!

  • Doctor Who

Any sympathy I had for them is dwindling as they continue to turn the tears on. Here in Spain the ROI are being treated as a bit of a joke with replays of Duff´s dive in the last 16 knock out match in the World Cup 2002 match being shown to highlight the less than whiter than white record of these poor hard done by souls.
The ROI´s attempt to turn this into a dipolmatic incident will im certain back fire on them.
Is it true the Wolfe Tonnes have already written a mope song about it?

“it’s a professional tragedy for Henry, who like Maradona before him will now be remembered for cheating rather than footballing brilliance”

If you think Maradona is remembered for cheating rather than brilliance, may I suggest you widen your reading and social circles.

We’re beginning to sound like the English, whinging on about the hand of God.

Before Henry’s goal, we couldn’t keep the ball for 10 seconds. We’d be better off addressing the reasons for that.

  • Driftwood

    Rory Carr

Irish Chelsea supporters are 2 a penny, probably cant speak Irish either, unlike…

Mack-if you don’t like certain posts just say not relevant, comments deleted.

  • RepublicanStones

Lads, lighten up. We lost by a dodgy feckin decision. Shit happens. Its part of the craic of sport to be able to rage about such injustices. Pubs would be pretty feckin boring otherwise, but this nonsense of demanding a replay…please.

If Keano had used his Tallaght paws to aid in the creation of a goal thus sending us to S.Africa, we’d be going

“Ye wee beaut..go on my son!”

  • Scaramoosh

If somebody can gather 1000000 signatures, under EU Law, a petition can be made to the European Commission on the matter.

Second, somebody should set up a Facebook page calling upon all disgruntled Irish person to boycott France when picking their holiday destination this Summer. That will hit the French where it hurts.

  • Pierre

Can I say that as a Frenchman, I like many of my countrymen are embarrassed by last nights result.
Ireland should have won. I welcome a replay which I think either side could win. The thing that amazes me about your small but impressive country is that you have 2 football teams. I’m sure you would already have been European champions like your rugby team if you had played as one team.

  • joeCanuck

Now that is too funny for words, Scaramoosh. You win the humour category.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    Pierre,

remove your beret, hide your onions under your coat and go to your embassy immediately, do not talk to anyone on the way there.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    Billy from rathcoole,

    any sign of Henry shirts?

  • Billy from rathcoole

    “any sign of Henry shirts?”

not yet but you never know…

    The original Tricolour.
    In East Belfast. Class.
    Sport indeed unites.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

probably more than any sport, footy can be decided by a split second decision – and I guess to an extent, these decisions are part and parcel of the excitement of the game.
Personally, I think replays should be used but going down the line of replaying matches would be a total shambles. Pish poor sportmanship from Ireland. Get over it… We can all support england instead 🙂

  • King J

Well – i admit – i think they were shafted. I’m and G and W army fan don’t get me wrong , but this was a bit much. Even for them oul tinks down south. Replay i say. QS.

Any chance of Phillipe or Marie Clare Bertillon appearing on this thread. Or even the picture of the fallen madonna with the big boobies.

To get back to the question posed “Did France cheat?”
That is a ridiculous question. There’s no doubt that Henri committed a foul and that the ref made a totally wrong call. That’s not cheating!
As others have remarked, if the shoe (boot) was on the other foot there’d be no whining at all at all.

  • Yokel

    It’s over.

If you want to win then you have to win it, not blame someone elses luck at getting away with something.

  • Greenie

Ach shure it’s a toss-up as to whether the Irish get more joy from seeing their team win or seeing England getting hammered. Fun to come.

  • Mack

Driftwood – Your comment was sectarian drivel. I used to have a high opinion of your contributions.

Dr. Who – While your comments weren’t the worst they played the man/men not the ball (and were implicitly elitest).

There was also a disgraceful ad homenim on an NI supporter removed too.

  • RepublicanStones

‘I agree with you man, now theres a first.’

Lets not make a habit out of it eh 😉

  • janeymac

You have to admire the French for their integrity & honesty. A poll on Le Figaro’s website:
Do the Blues merit a place in the World Cup (104,039 voters)

    No: 87.7%
    Yes: 12.3%

    DID FRANCE CHEAT?

Nope, they didn’t. They won the match fair and square….ahem! So let’s hope they go all the way and win the World Cup. Henri is one of the greatest players alive today.

So all kindly shut up about the match now and get on with your uneventful little lives.

BTW, gas to see the Republican flag of a Catholic country flying in East Belfast.

Viva la France! Viva la Republique!

If we don’t want to end up as a sad parody of Pommie whingers forever bleating about the hand of God,

then we use a GAA phrase and……..

    ‘we take our batin’

    Roll on the Euros.

  • Shanks

If France cheated because one of their players handled the ball then Ireland cheated too because Robbie Keane handled the ball.

Or is it only cheating if the handball results in a goal against Ireland?

  • No doubt the NI supporters would sportingly look the other way if they were blatantly cheated out of a chance to qualify for the World Cup. Ach, aye, surely. As an ROI supporter, I’m proud how we played, proud how we’re not rolling over when we’ve been cheated.

Is it a surprise that the orange tribe support a team of papist/muslim cheating frogs over the native celts? No surprise at all.

  • hand of frog

Time to move on. The team played great the other night and with Trap signing a new contract and the glitzy new stadium to look forward to, the signs are good for the Euro Championships.

As for France,Henry, Blatter and Platini-let them go to South Africa as cheats, frauds and hypocrites.

Oh heck-this moving on is harder than I thought….

  • oneill

“Is it a surprise that the orange tribe support a team of papist/muslim cheating frogs over the native celts? No surprise at all”

Having read your recent comments on here, it’s a surprise to see you resorting to racism to prove your point.

  • oneill,

“Frogs” racist? I thought that was on the acceptable side of the fence (like “Mick” “Jock” “Pommies” etc.)? If not, I withdraw it. Please insert “French folk”, and apologies for any offence caused.

  • Paisley Lives

It should be noted that the 26 co fans did not go on a rampage unlike the Windsor Park/Mark H Nazis. All the pro Iraqi war BBC couyld come up with is that the Irishmight boycott French kissing.

The Village idiots (geddit) can only spew parochial venom. Catholics, ie the true Irish, are bigger than that.

And to have the Prods supporting a catholic//Muslim French alliance is an improvement on homo William of Orange. So, as Mark would say, sunny side up.

  • Paisley Lives

Where is the referee and paid linesmen in all this? Why not put a contract out on them, like in The Quiet Man?

  • oneill

    Exile 1

    A much better approach!

Always better to stay on the safe side when labelling another nationality,

  • Time wasting

Cheating is part and parcel of soccer, always has been. I can’t understand all the fuss. There is no desire to change it either as FIFA is well known for astionishing levels of corruption and cronyism(sp?)

  • greagoir o frainclin

OK folks get over it, we don’t won’t to be going on about it for the next 20 years as England did over the Maradonna incident.

Look, the French won the match fair and square, according to FIFA and the result stands!

So let’s hope they go all the way now and win the World Cup.

Henri is one of the greatest players alive today and he is a great role model for kids.

So c’mon, let everyone in Ireland from East Belfast to East Cork support the gallant French team.

Vive le France! Vive le Republique!

…..Jedward to win the X Factor too!
(BTW, do ye’s from up north want to politize their fate as well?)

I think if France win the world cup again, Thierry Henri should be exiled to your country to play your gaelic football for the rest of his playing career!

  • Pierre

By the way Thierry Henry is call for a replay!!
