Super from Ireland – significant from All Blacks – dismal from Wales.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

couple of very interesting games today. England and Oz are both a bit rubbish at the minute but the return of King Johnny threatens to add some spice. I think home advantage will mean this one will go down to the wire with maybe australia just about sneeking it.
Similarily Wales and NZ have a lot to prove after recent poor performances. Fingers crossed for some open rugby. Again I expect the game to be pretty close. NZ probably have too much power and I reckon will sneek a win in the last 20 mins but I expect wales to push them very hard.

    NZ by 15.

    Aussies by 5.

Rugby world awaits clash between the big 2 on 28th in the Northen v Southern champions play off.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

or maybe they await france V NZ…

I thought the first half of All Blacks game was the worst I have seen them play for some time – Carter (who may not have been fit) kicked every ball and hardly broke into a trot. The 2nd half they simply up the tempo and destroyed Wales before again taking their foot off the pedal.

For Wales Geithin Jenkins and Ryan Jones were excellent but without Phillips and Byrne looked pretty toothless.

England, simply dont have the players, and their ability to beat teams by simply outweighing them does not work anymore. They have quite a few good players coming through but they are not ready yet and Johnson must as a result be presding over the worst win ratio in recent years.

Irleand’s backline including Bowe, O’Driscoll, Kearney, Fitzgerald and O’Leary is surely the best in Europe and if the scrum is in order then they should see off a quite imprerssive Australia and at least give South Africa a game good.

  • dewi

Bit of a strange disjointed game here – a pile of penalties and little adventure. As in the Magners the Welsh ain’t as good on the floor as we should be.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

…and of course the Welsh blame the ref – robbed for the 143rd consecutive time – with Wazza (Gatland) who has a habit of sticking his foot in his mouth adapting well to his new principality*( just for you Dewi) the whinger-in-chief.

*If you were at the game Dewi you have missed that moment of great national pride when the camera swung on to the embarassed face of Prince-something-or-other the vice-royal-patron or whatver he is sitting uncomfortably in the stands. He doenst want to be there and nobody actually wants him to be there – so what the feck is he doing there?

  • dewi

At the risk of losing any veneer of sophistication that I might pretend to have – Sammy – shove it up your arse!

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

Wind ur neck in sammie, i just love how you speak on behalf of the entire population of wales…

as for ireland, i woulnd’t get ur hopes up. Our so called play-makers TOL and ROG have been in crud form so far this season so I doubt the likes of BOD and Fitzy will even see the ball… Ozzie looked half decent earlier but england are so crud it’s very hard to judge. Thought Wilko looked good though.

In contrast to your views, I was pretty impressed by NZ. They played a nice tight percentage game in the 1st half and consequently the welsh lads looked out on their feet after 50 minutes. I think NZ have realised that world cups are not won by fancy backlines running in 50 m tries – hence gone are players like rocothoco and sivivatu and in come solid players who play the percentages and are unlikely to give away silly tries. In addition, you have to consider the number of ‘all blacks’ that can;t play for their country as they play overeas – so they have started their rebuilding process quite well and should be formidable opposition in a couple of years time.

  • Without Wilkinson England would have lost by 30 points today.

  • Conor

TOL has been in great form since returning from injury, along with David Wallace he’s been one of the only Munster players showing any form in the last month. He was man of the match against Ulster last weekend.

ROG has been truely crap though and I really hope (but don’t expect) Kidney will go with Sexton.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    Futurery,

re. “They played a nice tight percentage game in the 1st half and consequently the welsh lads looked out on their feet after 50 minutes. ”

Wasn’t it only last year we heard how fit and well trained Wales were and now they cant last 50 minutes with the All Black punting the ball into the corners and playing the game at a fairly slow pace. I’m afraid that does not stack up.

re. The winding in of necks. In the absence of extensive horizontal opinion polling i.e. asking many Welsh people I have opted for extensive vertical polling i.e. asking the same Welsh (that is Dewi) many times – this completely scientific approach has yielded extremely consistent results as every time a Prince or indeed a Principality is mentioned Dewi goes off on one – see post 7 above.

Conor, I agree about TOL he has had very little game time after returning from injury and may have kept Munster in the HC with his try against Northampton and I agree with you and Futurery that ROG has been poor but I would give him a run against Aussies and see how he does there before sidelining him. I would also have liked to have seen Humph the younger given a run against Fiji.

Updated with last night’s result – come on the Argies…

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    Dewi,

Lucky, lucky, lucky Wales. Wazza(Gatland) nearly blew it again – as against Italy – he seems to believe his own propaganda that Wales are world beaters. There were periods in that game where Wales made or 4 or 5 consecutive mistakes and threw away chance after chance. Thought Hook and Halfpenny looked very dangerous but lack of grunt up front must we a worry.

France looked the business against South Africa – looks like it will be a straight fight between Ireland and France for 6N.

p.s. what some Sluggeronians may not be aware of is that your desire for the Argies to give the Englezes a damn good thrashing may not be simply inspired by a desire for a very badly behaved and violent next door neighbour to get her comeuppence but also because of the incredible story of the Welsh language in Argieland.

Ireland to win this if they keep up lineout work.

Ireland to lose this if they keep up scrum work…

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    Satisfactory.

    Hope Fitzgerald is ok.

Bowe to move to centre and Earls to start on the wing – Paddy Pudsey Bear Wallace to the bench.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

Not sure how we scraped a draw out of that one. Ozzie blew us apart all over the park – their 7 was outstanding. Scrum was shambles and breakdown not much better. let’s not forget this ozzie side only won once in the tri-nations!!
So much negativity in Union these days – fair play to Ozzie for actually trying to play some rugby. i reckon we could well struggle against fiji as well – and south africa will be very very tough. looks as though france are going to be the side to beat this year. Bowe to centre – me think you lost ur marbles again Sammie. What’s the point of bringing earls – sure the ball never gets that wide? Besides, he;s as much a liability as an attacking threat at times… One of the problems with irish rugby is that we don’t have much strength and depth. Apart from Earls, Reddan and Darcy there arn’t many options available to the coaches…

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    futurey,

As usual you are too hard on the good guys – this was their first outing and many of the Irish players have virtually no rugby under their belt international or otherwise. Australia a very good team and will in my opinion dispatch Wales and Scotland.

Scrum went badly lineout went well – and too slow to the breakdown – but will beat Fiji by at least 15. Want to bet £10 otherwise?

I’m sticking with Pudsey out Earsley in, Bowe is the form back in Europe at the moment – get him involved as much as possible.

We have the best backs in the tounament (6N) and a pack (subject to scrum settling down as it normally does) able to compete with the best i.e. France. Worst England team in years and Wales as usual believe their own propaganda and lack grunt.

re. “One of the problems with Irish rugby is that we don’t have much strength and depth”

Churchill cup victory put paid to that old chestnut/misconception – batch of excellent Ulster players coming through and now even have cover for ROG in Sexton and Humphreys.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

I didn;t say we would lose to fiji – now that would be a disaster! But I reckon we could struggle for long periods of the 1st half. As for team selection, we’ll probably bring in 5-6 new faces to rest a few guys for the big test V SA. I’d imagine the likes of earles, trimble and Court will get a start.

If Bowe is in the form of his career on the wing why on earth would you move him? I assume you would move him to 2nd centre thus also moving BOD to 1st? Bonkers. IMHO Paddy had a decent game, George Hook even suggested he had a ‘cracking game’!

With regards to strength and depth, this is a no brainer. England have lost something like 20-25 players due to injury yet they can still beat argentina (world ranking 4?). Look at how we used the bench today?? We didn;t! that is a clue sammy – there is no-one that kidney trusts to come on!! We have next to no cover at hooker or prop which is pretty shocking really. Sexton is untested at this level and will remain so if ROG is fit. We have decent cover at 6, 9, 12, wings, FB. But not many options in the pack. That said, the IRFU do an excellent job protecting the internationals – i.e. limiting the number of provincal games they can play in, so injuries ‘shouldn’t’ be too significant.

Fact is, we had home advantage to a very young ozzie side who had previously struggled to overcome a 2nd or 3rd english XV. Not good enough methinks.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    futurey,

    Usual Irish doom and gloom.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

Cracking win for the scots against the ozzies today – although it put into perspective how good this australian side is – i.e. not very.
As I correctly predicted 🙂 :), ireland struggled for long periods against an understrength fijian side. Some decent irish individual performances but collectively, quite poor I thought. Sexton is definitely one for the future and must now get decent game time so we have some good backup for ROG. Another couple of injuries for ireland – leamy looked wrecked and flannery I think took a knock near the end.
Thought England stepped up a gear but NZ arn’t a great side and looked reasonably comfortable for most of the game.
Good win for wales but again Argy missing key players. Lot of injuries in the game at the minute and a lot of talk about the game getting too physical – they probably have a point…

Next weekend will give a better guaage of who are the top sides in world rugby: NZ V France and Ireland V SA. Two very tough games to predict. I’d probably just about go for close wins for both the home sides.

  • Dewi

Updated – Shane Williams is not of this world…..and how on earth Scotland won that I have no idea…

  • Dewi

Watched England NZ last night on the box. A stroll in the park in 3rd gear. France next week will be interesting.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

Nothing about Leamy’s injury on the RTE website – (it recently won some award – well the competition must have been shite) looking at the Munsterfans website havent seen a better sports wesbsite) it seems he damaged his ankle and has a scan on Monday.

    http://www.munsterfans.com

Great performance from Scotland it is good to see them coming back into the reckoning and with so many good young players – Ireland a bit flattered by scoreline. Ireland to sneak it aginast SA if scrum is in order.

Thought England played well Moyne unlucky not to have scored – expect France to beat NZ.

    Dewi,
re. “Shane Williams is not of this world” The boy done good – but true to form he needs occasionally to look where he’s going.

Fancy a straight tenner (money to Slugger as usual) on next weeks Wales game? I’ll go with the guys in green, white and gold.

    Anyone see France All Blacks?

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

wow, impressive scoreline from the blacks – I didn’t see that one coming. Had an enjoyable day down at croker yesturday – been to a few rugger games down there and that was by far the best atmosphere – bloody cold though!
Enjoyed the tight game but thought SA dug themselves into a big hole in the 2nd 40 which allowed ireland to canter along. Far too much kicking from both sides – the rules really need modified ASAP. Thought Sexton was steady, BOD, POC and Kearny were outstanding but TOL had another poor game at 9. Scrum was pretty shocking again but SA didn’t really exploit us as they may have.
Ireland really have a knack of winning these tight games now. Next task is to start beating the top sides likes France, SA, Oz and NZ away from home.

  • dewi

O’ Driscoll a candidate for sainthood – another outstanding selfless display.

  • the future’s bright, the future’s orange

i can’t believe the guy is still only 30 – seems he’s been at the top of the game forever!!! in addition the guy just never gets injured!!!

  • Dewi

Looking at all the results it looks like France and Ireland will be competing for the 6 nations – although the Scotland win over Australia the result of the autumn.

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

    Bore da Dewi,

have been in Baile Átha Cliath for the game and will take that result every time. Apart from scrum (which could have lost us the game) the boyz done very good and even bate the big nasty feckers up front.

Wales were woeful and set the wrong tone before the game by having Halfpenny jibber jabbering about Wales being better than Australia and the general stuff from the ‘camp’ about being the only team who can play properly – no doubt Wazza Gatland was behind most of it. That sort of crazy talk really should not go on – though I look forward to more of it before the Ireland game.

I presume you have done the honest thing and handed over your tenner to Slugger?

  • Dewi

Let it run for a bit Sammy (until I owe enough to make it worthwhile…)

  • Itwas SammyMcNally whatdoneit

Ok but. I cant remember what bets are running at the moment – I think Munster to go further than Toulose in HC?

Have we got something on the 6N?

  • Dewi

    I’ll look it up tonight…..

  • Dewi

“but I’ll take Munster for a £10 – if Toulouse get further than Munster I owe Slugger a tenner and vice versa?”

You were right Sammy..I can’t find anything on 6N….
