US Secretary of State to visit NI “within weeks”

Earlier predictions were for a September visit, but at the Labour Party conference Northern Ireland Secretary of State, Shaun Woodward, MP, confirmed what “sources close to the Clinton camp” told Niall O’Dowd at the start of this month. BBC report – “The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is planning to visit Northern Ireland “within weeks”.” Although we’re still waiting for an official announcement. Was it a sudden decision? She is still the US Secretary of State. Adds the iol report includes the quote

“I can announce today that within the next few weeks Secretary of State Hillary Clinton specifically wants to come to Northern Ireland to help look at the jobs and opportunities and investment that America can bring to Northern Ireland,” [Shaun Woodward] said.

Update It’s worth noting the anticipated itinerary in the RTÉ report

She will travel to London first on 10 October. Mrs Clinton is expected to meet Taoiseach Brian Cowen and Minister for Foreign Affairs Micheál Martin when she arrives in Dublin the following day. On 12 October she will travel to Belfast to meet political leaders there.

Its great to see Hilary coming. Hopefully she will put a fire under those that are blocking progress of the implementation of the GFA.

Some of the politicians are unable to see that the process in NI has to keep some momentum.

Those that stand still will allow the mistakes of the past to engulf them again.

Hopefully Hilary can get Barry to make a visit in the near future as well.

    Thereyouarenow,

Spot on. It will be a little embarassing for the DUP to be still outside the tent pissing in when she arrives.

Pete, looks like your pal Niall was not far off with his predictions?

  • Pete Baker, firstly, shouldn’t your thread today start off with an apology to Niall O’Dowd? For the last number of months you have singlehandedly incorrectly slated him about Hillary Clinton pending visit…
    http://www.sluggerotoole.com/index.php/she-is-the-secretary-of-state-not-a-special-envoy/ and here http://www.sluggerotoole.com/index.php/declan-kelly-us-economic-envoy-to-ni/

    …and her commitment to NI…

You then seemed to lead onto a more personal campaign against NO’D and Irish America in general with your blasts regarding Trina Vargo & the US-Ireland Alliance lobby group. You also were at the forefront in supporting Niall Stanage and his complaints about Irish America.

Secondly can you let me know if you are the Irish American moderator for this site? Else why do you seem to have a bee in your bonnet about all things NY & WashDC ?

Belfast Gonzo and Canada/Cork’s Mark Dowling can also jump in here apologizing once they’ve finishing eating crow.

“For the last number of months you have singlehandedly incorrectly slated him about Hillary Clinton pending visit…”

If you’re going to accuse me of something, you should get it right.

Here’s the furthest I’ve gone on predictions of Clinton’s visit – it’s linked in the original post.

“[O’Dowd’s] argument, such as it is, is that the US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, who may or may not visit NI in September, will take responsibility for the role.”

And I stand by what I’ve said about his mis-briefings on the “special envoy” – also linked above.

  • Clay Davis

Pete should apologise when O’Dowd apologises for being a bigot. Eating crow? Even a broken clock is right twice a day and that hardly makes up for O’Dowd’s many missteps, his bigotry and his pathetic attacks on Trina Vargo.

  • Clay Davis

An Irish-American moderator? So there’s an ethnicity test? As an Irish-American fully supportive of ulster unionism, would I be acceptable to Mr O’Dowd as a moderator? I would imagine the only moderators acceptable to Mr O’Dowd are those individuals who are also acceptable to Ted Howell.

  • the following mustn’t have come thro on your screen (it’s not likeyou completely ignored it)…….

    …and her commitment to NI…

I’m busy at tthe moment but later i’ll list the numerous threads you started which included jabs at NOD and productive IrishAmeric participation.

and I’m not even a NO’D fan what with his FG background !!!

    Stay tuned !!!

  • Clay,
that would be a moderator for Irish American newpapers, perdiocals and media info from the USA etc.

Where you got the idea that I’m asking is Pete Faker a moderator for Irish Americ opinion is beyond me. May I suggest that you review the term moderator and how it might be applied to a site for “Notes on Northern Ireland politicas and culture”.

“So there’s an ethnicity test? ”

Of course not but you’ve certainly proven that there’s no IQ test for posting to this thread !!!

  • Alan – Newtownards

Here we go again. The yanks are coming! Let’s bow the knee and grovel to these people all because of the dollar. Sorry I don’t care which party they belong to, we don’t need them. Let’s sort out are own mess.

  • dunreavynomore

    Alan

As a republican I am inclined to agree with you. What sort of a place is this that all it takes to get people quivering in excitement is a visit from a yank?
