Fear of the far-right screws an old Italian

Prior to the recent European Parliament election there was a big push to change the rules on having the oldest MEP chair the inaugural meeting of Parliament when it seemed possible far-right French politician Jean-Marie Le Pen could be in line the role. Longstanding rules were hastily changed to ensure the position went to the outgoing Parliament President or one of his vice-presidents. Turns out this was all wasted effort (link is in French) as longstanding Italian politician and former Prime Minister, Ciriaco de Mita, would have been the oldest MEP and entitled to the job.
