Rankin returns as Irish face Sri Lanka

After two heavy defeats to world champions India and New Zealand, today Ireland face a Sri Lankan side who have already eliminated the Australians from the competition in comprehensive fashion and whipped the Pakistanis in their last game. Sanity appears to have returned to selection with Boyd Rankin replacing Peter Connell and Andrew White in for Gary Wilson. Kumar Sangakkara has won the toss and chosen to bat first – I would suggest he wants to give his batters a full 20 over workout – but Rankin has removed Tillekaratne Dilshan (player of the tournament) in the first over! 3 overs gone, Sri Lanka 12-1, great start for Ireland. Coverage on Sky Sports, BBC Radio Five Live Sports Extra, Cricinfo, BBC Online and Cricket Ireland. Update You can follow Pete as well, just above me as the natural order dictates!
Update Sangakkara c N O’Brien b Johnston 3 Sri Lanka 14-2 (3.3 ov) Great start continues. 42-2 (8 ov) – Excellent spell from Johnston 4-1-18-1 Now 16 overs gone 111-4 – McCallen & West keeping the lid on things, Ireland are right in this one. Latest 126-5 (17.3 ov) The boys need to finsh this off now, anything under 150 is possible. Update – Jayawardene gone! 128-6 (18) – real chance here! Update Ireland need 145, great death bowling from Cusack and Ireland were superb in the field. Caution – Ireland will have to score more runs than they ever have before to win this game against the world’s leading test wicket taker, the slinger and the mystery spinner. The dream lives on…
Ireland’s innings Solid start through the powerplay 37-0 (6) but Nobby looks like he’s done his ankle again – not sure he’ll be allowed a runner if it comes to that. Latest 50 partnership for the opening wicket, Ireland up with the run rate 59-0 (9) Porterfield gone caught behind off Murali 59-1 (9.1) Latest 67-1 (11) O’Brien’s limp gets worse but if he’s there at the end, we win Now Rate going up, White needs to hit out or get out 75-1 (13) Latest He did both – skied one after 2 boundaries 87-2 (13.5) Kevin O’Brien in now. Now Kevin goes without troubling the scorers, Sri Lanka favourites now Latest Niall stranded in mid-pitch after dancing towards Mendis, Ireland now staring down the barrel 4 down and required rate 11 an over. Will the Irish concede with a whimper or go down swinging? Now Trent Johnston just about keeping Ireland in it – 40 required off the last 3 overs 2 overs to go Malinga cleaned up Johnston and Botha, it looks beyond the Irish now, 36 required from 12 balls Ireland not quite dead yet 18 needed from the last over, unlikely but not impossible – can Sri Lanka hold their nerve? Sri Lanka win by 9 runs A good performance from Ireland at headquarters, competitive in the field but ultimately inexperienced batting against quality spin bowling cost them this game. You could argue that a couple of misfields cost Ireland the game as well though, on such small margins are these things decided. Last game tomorrow, Pakistan at The Oval.
