If you have enjoyed our election coverages (on and off Slugger)…

Don’t be shy and stick a few quid in the tip jar… Day five of non stop listening thinking data chasing and gossiping… Those of you who have have followed us will know the news headlines tonight were being reported in Slugger by Saturday evening… We’ll get back to real life shortly, but there will be a few things to gather together… Not least your stories of the act of voting… Were you given all the information you needed… and if you asked turn out date, did they give you that information… suggestions for improvements on Slugger (apologies for our prolonged absences (the peril of running an unfunded website)… Highlight for me, was the crowdsourceing of local turnout from those polling stations… We’ll see what we can do to get it adopted for Westminster…

This was my first election “on slugger”. I don’t think I have ever seen a better example of collaborative work in this emerging aspect of Web 2.0 and user-generated content.

It has been thoroughly entertaining and informative – you don’t have to agree with everything “broadcast” on the site, but a better collective of amateur political analysis, which truly reflects the grassroots from all shades, you’d be hard pushed to find.

My only wish? That some of our politicos would come on here more often and use this instead of some of its “focus groups” and other means of gauging public reaction.

Well done to all – I will certainly gladly hit the tip jar.

May I just ask, and pardon my ignorance, why wasn’t de Brún’s surplus/votes transferred to Alban?

  • ecthelion

wow cant believe it, just made a donation, good job mick keeping things going, roll on westminister!

  • Mark McGregor

Neither de Brún’s or Nicholson’s surpluses were transfered as they weren’t sufficent to pull Maginness ahead of Dodds.

Mick, I do appreciate all the work that everyone put in for the live update but it’s a damn shame that Slugger cowpes any time there’s an event (not just an election) of any sort of significance. It’s preventing the site from reaching its true potential (and ad impression revenue!).

We always “do” the polling stations anyway but it would be great to have it properly organized in advance and pool our stuff with everyone else. Useful service for the political parties in general. I’d have liked some live blogging from the count, too, another thing worth getting organized for Westminster as well as the next assembly elections.

Another aspect is the reluctance to share tallies between parties like in the south. Maybe Mick could be a neutral broker for receipt of information from various parties in future (box numbers removed)? We’d build a better picture, quicker that way.

Made a donation,Mick. It was worth it to hear you say that the stoops were yesterday’s men. You’re starting to mature.

Point taken. We’re planning a complete rebuild and a shift to Word Press which has ways of sustain service in big traffic storms. We are also looking at the match between the software and the size of the server. I simply could not afford to whack it up to a bigger server for these surges, when most of the time we don’t need most of the time.

I agree re grabbing the data and doing something more powerful with it. Next time, we’ll flag it up earlier and look for a partner who can stump up the finance to make that happen. I also think we should look for more opportunities to get readers involved in producing good content themselves. I’d like to bring the blogburst back (I gave it up because it used to take two hours), but I think I’d like to find ways of ways of getting the reader’s recommendations up on the front of the site…

BTW, thanks to all of those who have been so generous already… the thought and the money are much appreciated… I feel this last weekend has been much about proving the real value of community when it is strained towards a useful purpose..

Threw ye’ a few beer tokens there Mick, shhhhh. Bit annoyed couldn’t log in for ages today, but nobody/nothing is perfect.

  • redhugh78

No contribution from me as I believe there is an unbalanced anti-SF agenda on Slugger.

  • Sam Flanagan

I have just made a donation. Your attempt to provide alternative media coverage is very interesting and enjoyable.
Hopefully the next election will be asap!
