David Carradine 1936–2009

Actor David Carradine, 72, has been found dead in a hotel room in Bangkok where he was filming his latest movie. He is believed to have taken his own life. NY Times biography. Washington Post gallery. And the BBC’s obituary. Mark Kermode pays tribute in this clip, and The Guardian’s Xan Brooks has a collection of great clips of Carradine from Kung Fu to Crank: High Voltage via The Serpent’s Egg and Kill Bill.

So farewell then Grasshopper! RIP whatever your demons were.

  • Carradine’s picture is on the front page of Thai Rath newspaper. His death seems to be rather mysterious.Found naked in the wardrobe with one end of a shoe lace tied around his penis and the other end fastened around his neck. Both his hands were bound with a cord which was also tied around his neck.A footprint found on the bed in his hotel room did not match his shoes. There was a glass of water in the room. Experts are checking to see if the drink had been tampered with.
I really liked his Kung Fu TV show.It was the kind of stuff that inspired me to come East.

When a man is found dead in such circumstances in a hotel bedroom wardrobe it is not usually concluded so swiftly that “he took his own life” but rather that death occurred by misadventure during an attempt at auto-erotic strangulation.

It might be said more simply that he was intent upon coming not upon going.

  • When it’s a Bangkok hotel all sorts of adventures may be taking place.Anyway Dr.Porntip is looking into it.

“At least he died while engaged in the practice of our noble art”, said a spokesman for J. Arthur Rank.

  • Greagoir O Frainclin

….a bit of a Michael Hutchince death?

    the dirty old man!

  • Adrec

A man who lived life in xs.

  • Big Maggie

    Rory,

    “J. Arthur Rank”

    Is that rhyming slang?

That’s the difficulty when a man like Carradine has done everything (and everybody). They like to experiment, in search of the “ultimate high”. Tragic and stupid in equal measure.

A fitting candidate for a Darwin Award?

(My submission word was “normal”. How bizarre is that? :^)

  • Rory Carr

    Rory,

    “J. Arthur Rank”

    Is that rhyming slang?

Do you know, Maggie, now that you come to mention it, I think it just possibly might be.:) **

In any case, David Carradine is to be applauded for a spectacular final performance and one that provided us with a welcome distraction on Slugger from all those fans of obscure Ulster politicians who were boringly predicting the triumph of their man/woman/party/rump in the Euro elections.

Come Monday I expect quite a few surprises might be found hanging in wardrobes in Belfast, Ballymacwotsit and points west.

** God! You’re priveleged, Maggie. That is my first ever (and last) resort to the use of an emoticon.

  • Big Maggie

    Rory,

“That is my first ever (and last) resort to the use of an emoticon.”

It’s only very recently I learned that the “t” in emoticon is pronounced as “s”, as in emotion.

I don’t like them either. But the web being what it is, sometimes a gal’s words can be misconstrued :^(

    You see? :^)

  • Big Maggie

I forgot to mention it. At the time of his death Wee Davey was “working” on a movie entitled “Stretch”.

    How’s that for a self-fulling prophesy?

It’s only very recently I learned that the “t” in emoticon is pronounced as “s”, as in emotion.

Never heard it pronounced that way. Only ever with a hard-“t”, as in a squished-together “emote icon”.

  • Graphic police photo claiming to show Carradine’s body was published in Thai Rath newspaper.
According to today’s Bangkok Post, quoting the police,a phallic shrine was set up in the room and many pairs of coloured underpants with the bottoms cut out were also found.Coincidentally, the grounds of the hotel are home to Bangkok’s most famous phallic shrine.
