Were you at the SDLP breakfast blogger ‘meat up’?

Sorry, I had a long day yesterday, and today will be a short one. I meant to flag up Conall’s post on the SDLP’s blogger’s breakfast (they usually put on a good old fashioned spread) this morning… Looks like there were quite a few people there… Let us know of any write ups below?

Adds: One blogger takes a wee sneaky peak at Slugger instead/as well as* of listening intently to the presentation…

* delete as appropriate (you know who you are! ;-))

  • I think the timing was a bit inconvenient for most bloggers who work full time jobs. A lazy part time student part time worker can fit it in, but even I had to rush off after about half an hour.

I think the SDLP are doing a lot to interact with the online community in NI and that event was a nice coup.

The actual broadcast was quite good, though I haven’t seen SF’s yet.

  • Bleedin’ Heart Liberal

Good to see a party taking initiative and prioritising this kind of outreach – and in itself it was a good event and well attended

First write up I’ve found is Matt McDermott’s over at No Gloss, Just Matt

Was at the SDLP Bloggers Breakfast this morning. It went very well with a very positive turnout from bloggers all over the North. A very good election video which can be viewed on youtube, I especially like how the video shows Alban connecting people with all different people throughout the North.

I think its fantastic that the SDLP have chose to run such a big online campaign for this election, an inspiring idea mirroring the campaign from Barrack Obama ofcourse.

I now feel inspiration to start up my own blog as a young politics graduate thanks to all of this.

I say keep up the good work SDLP and Alban ofcourse!!!

  • Hands up.

That’s me have a sneak at Slugger!!!

Good event though. I think the could explore a other timings in future campaigns.

    Conall

  • elbandito

Yawn, a bunch of students and SDLP members making references to the ‘North’ and congratulating themselves on being able to use a computer…

  • sj1

It was me caught you Conall.:)

  • Michelle Byrne

I think its very rich for people to come and criticise students and SDLP members for making an election more exciting, especially when the individual feels they should identify themselves to other people on the site!!

Perhaps the individual should take more time to recognise the fact that the SDLP are the only party to embrace the wonderful technology that we have today and not let it go to waste.

  • Michelle Byrne

Sorry, a mistake in my above thread….

“Especially when the individual feels they should not identify themselves to other people on the site.”

  • Driftwood

the fact that the SDLP are the only party to embrace the wonderful technology that we have today

WTF? I take it you’re not being serious, because if you are, I don’t fancy your chances getting a job. Unless it’s for the SDLP of course. But not a real job.

  • Michelle Byrne

Driftwood – I accept your comments but of course do not appreciate how ignorant you have came across.

By commenting on how the SDLP are embracing such technology I was referring to the fact that they are the first party to launch a party election broadcast on youtube.

Also, I find it interesting to see another user who refuses to let the people see how is really behind that name.

  • Driftwood

    Michelle Byrne
Your initial statement about technology was naive, to put it mildly.
You’re a student and SDLP supporter, so that’s understandable.

But if you want to make a valid point, be prepared to roll with the punches. That’s politics.

ps elbandito and myself haven,t hidden anything about who we are.

    Good luck blogging

  • Mark McGregor

Mick blogged in 2007 about the UUP having their PEB online before the TV broadcast so that’s another election spoof busted.

  • Gentlemen, please.

I am dipping into this late because of work. Is it too much to ask that we keep our comments on the issue and play the ball, not the man (or the woman for that matter).

  • Dark Lord

Great day, was really enjoyable. Fair play to the SDLP for coming up with this! It was the first event of its kind organised by any of the parties here and it was great that us bloggers had the opportunity to steal the limelight from the politicians!

  • Michelle Byrne

I don’t think its acceptable for you to generalise me by my politics or by my occupation.

I of course accept all criticism made to me and find this all very exciting as I enter into the world of blogging.

  • Michelle,

…. as I enter into the world of blogging

Are you planning to start a blog, or just to comment on other people’s blogs? Only the former would be considered ‘blogging’.

  • Michelle Byrne

    Horseman…

….I am planning to begin a blog over the next few weeks but I am researching other blogs etc before I start my own to get the jist of things.

  • Dave

“Perhaps the individual should take more time to recognise the fact that the SDLP are the only party to embrace the wonderful technology that we have today and not let it go to waste.”

And then what? Vote for a party because they have the computer skills of the average teenager?

  • Expenses111

Did anyone say to Alban Magennis that a member of SDLP youth thinks that some of the SDLP “reprsentatives are too old and portrayed as out-of-touch.”

I think that this mornings SDLP gimmick was aimed at students to try and get a few supporters. Those with a brain in our head can see through it as a political stunt.

It is weird that Alban is continually saying that people should vote for the MEP candidate that has done the most for them in the past 5 years. Funny that as the SDLP havent had an MEP for 5 years and Alban is known for being lazy.

  • Michelle Byrne

    Dave –

I think your comment is very childish. I was simply celebrating the fact that the SDLP are using the internet aswell as other resources to advertise the election campaign. I am aware of other political parties using similar tactics in the campaign trail, but as I have yet to attend one of these events, I therefore cannot comment on them.

  • … a member of SDLP youth thinks that some of the SDLP “reprsentatives are too old and portrayed as out-of-touch.”

Not just ‘a member’. The bold Barry Magee is their ‘international secretary’ …!

  • Expenses111

    Horseman,

oh is he now. that is very interesting. must email Eddie McGrady and let him know.

  • Expenses111,

It gets even better than that. Barry is also branch secretary of the SDLP in Lecale … in Eddie McGrady’s own constituency!

He has his own blog too (take note, Michelle):

    http://www.talesfromlecale.blogspot.com/

  • Mack

    Michelle –

“Especially when the individual feels they should not identify themselves to other people on the site.”

If you’re talking about elbandito, he isn’t quite anonymous having supplied an email address (visible if you move your mouse over his pseudonym). Not sure if that makes any difference..

  • Driftwood

I especially like how the video shows Alban connecting people with all different people throughout the North.

    dear God!

    Do you get out much?

  • fair_deal

    Play the ball folks

  • Michelle Byrne

Yes that is in fact true…I do like how the video shows this. Alban has been out all over the North talking to people and listening to what they have to say…can you not see this from the video? Using the Lords name in vein is not appreciated.

  • Expenses111

I am waiting for Alban to turn up at my door. I cant wait.

  • nineteensixtyseven

A party tries to engage with bloggers but gets hit with a barrage of abuse by grouchy keyboard warriors. There’s no pleasing some people.

  • Michelle Byrne

    Point well made nineteensixtyseven

  • Driftwood

Where is this ‘North’ you talk about Michelle?
    North Belfast?

  • Mark McGregor

So we know that several SDLP members loved the event and PEB. No surprise.

Of the four non-SDLP members I’ve read that attended (2 bloggers, 2 lobbyists) I don’t get the impression they were filled with enthusiasm from their matter of fact tweets or limited blogging.

  • Michelle Byrne

The North of Ireland “Driftwood.” Again, a childish remark as I am almost certain you know exactly where I was referring too. Interesting to see from the last few threads you attacking me on a personal basis….

“Dear God..do you get out much.”

Not very wise in my opinion Driftwood.

  • Expenses111

    Michelle,

What do you make of the accusations that if people disagree with Durkan, McDonnell or Ritchie they get thrown out of the SDLP. Is that fair or bullying?

  • Michelle Byrne

    What accusations are these Expenses111??

  • Expenses111

From my sources and things I have read here before that in the SDLP if people go against Durkan, McDonnell or Ritchie they get kicked out of the SDLP. Is Barry Magee next?

  • Driftwood

Not a personal attack Michelle, wise up.

Some people consider the term ‘North of Ireland’ to be a derogatory attempt to show distaste for Northern Ireland, the actual name of the state here.

You may just find that people will disagree with your opinions sometimes Michelle. And that’s the way the cookie crumbles.

  • nineteensixtyseven

“From my sources and things I have read here before that in the SDLP if people go against Durkan, McDonnell or Ritchie they get kicked out of the SDLP. Is Barry Magee next?”

Haha, that’s nonsense. I know a few people who would have been kicked out years ago if that was the case.

  • Expenses111

    1967,

Quite clearly Durjan, McDonnell and Ritchie were not leaders years ago.

  • elbandito

“The North of Ireland “Driftwood.” Again, a childish remark as I am almost certain you know exactly where I was referring too. Interesting to see from the last few threads you attacking me on a personal basis…”.

Fantasy Island – The SDLP are just as keen on delusional labels of nationalistic convenience ‘the north’ ‘these islands,’as their republican brothers and sisters.

Makes me long for the days of ‘post-nationalism’ and genuine ‘social democracy’

  • I was at the event this morning, it went very well, was well attended.

    http://noglossjustmatt.com/2009/05/sdlp-bloggers-breakfast-well-10am/

As for Barry Magee – 1) he’s not the Party’s international secretary, your information is wrong, 2) your information is also wrong, no one would get ‘kicked out’ of the party for criticising Durkan, McDonnell or Ritchie, we’re not SF or the DUP and 3) really? Barry’s comments are what’s exercising you? Grow up, he has an opinion, he’s part of a democratic party, diversity and openness: “welcome” – perhaps a new concept for you??

Good event, good initiative, good turn out and good response generally… and the reason we were all there this morning: don’t forget to vote on the 4th…when we win…you know the rest….

  • Matt,

As for Barry Magee – 1) he’s not the Party’s international secretary, your information is wrong

Fair enough, you’re in a better position to know. He is, though (or was recently) SDLP Youth’s ECOSY Bureau Member (ECOSY = European Community Of Socialist Youth).

I’ve nothing against him, btw – I just found his internet naivety quite funny. If I were an SDLP leader I wouldn’t kick him out – I’d just remind him that he’ll be old too sooner than he wants!

  • Expenses111,

‘Durjan’ has never been leader although, bless him, he keeps trying. Durkan has been leader for the best part of a decade now, that counts as years.

  • Expenses111

    1967

That was a typing error clearly – Durkan is his name. The SDLP are finished. Gone. Their image is terrible. I met O’Donnell once and he was anything but nice. I know a constituent who emailed him and he never replied.

  • I met O’Donnell once and he was anything but nice …

Daniel??? But my mammy says he’s GORGEOUS.

    [Or did you mean McDonnell?]

  • Expenses111

    Horseman

Did know you were a comedian. This is what happens when one is tired. I do mean McDonnell

  • Mick Fealty

Right, I know there is a fecking election on, but can we leave the mutual blackening of each’s character and argue about real politics?

I’m more than happy to ban few folk. Especially those long enough in their Slugger teeth to know better!!

Really, I have seen bigger sites than this one ruined because of this kind of personal slagging…

  • Danny O’Connor

    Matt ,
They might not throw you out, but, they do other nasty things, they have public meetings in your constituency and dont tell you, they circulate leaflets without even informing you of either their content or their existence beforehand, and do everything possible to sideline you, they promise your constituency to someone from outside the area, someone who cant hold their drink-and subsequently tells everyone how they will be so wonderful while they are at a conference in Fermanagh.
I still have had no communication from the director of elections,I wish Alban well and I will be voting for him,but there are many others who I wouldn’t.

  • Chris Donnelly

    Danny
Not to sidetrack the thread, but your comments are considerably more interesting than what’s passed for handbagging on this thread up to now.

I take it you’re not flavour of the month at HQ and won’t be contesting the next locals or Assembly election then?

Tis a pity as I actually thought you’d reclaim a nationalist seat in the new East Antrim constituency.

  • Danny O’Connor

    Chris,
I will ,but on what ticket, who knows?

  • Danny O’Connor

    reclaim a seat ,that is

  • Driftwood

    Danny
The Conservatives and Unionists are happy to pick from all walks of life.
David Cameron may be happy to welcome you on board. No Moats or helipads I trust?

  • Danny O’Connor

Driftwood, There is a saying, never say never, but on this occasion i won’t abide by it.
Never never never never (complete with paisley accent).
