“Planning reform proposals are being held up..”

The Northern Ireland Environment Minister, the DUP’s Sammy Wilson, was answering question in the NI Assembly today and he took the opportunity, during a question from Sinn Féin’s Cathal Boylan, to claim that planning reform proposals are “being held up in the Office of the deputy First Minister..”

Thought Dathi McKay’s quip about Sammy being in the DUP ‘Sin-Bin’ was great today, but even better was Sammy’s comeback – “I haven’t gone away you know!”

    1. Unfortunately, the Planning Service will be transferring its staff to Councils. Oh well.

    2. I am wondering if the successor to PPS14 is what’s holding things up…? (though I thought it was much further advanced than that)

    2. As for the polar bear remark, Sammy’s none too well read at all. Development, persistent environmental pollutants, and drilling for oil and gas pose more of a threat than global warming. But sure, anything for til play til the audience.

Raven, I’ve understand from friends who work in Planning Service that nearly all the local councillors are terrified of having responsibility for planning, mainly because they won’t be able to play to the gallery and blame Planning Service for unpopular decisions.

nearly all the local councillors are terrified of having responsibility for planning

Why do I have an awful sinking feeling that this will mean more planning decisions being held up in someone’s office?

I cant decide which is more of a pity, that neither of them could string a sentence together or the puerile theatrics.

Obviously this “NI Assembly” is just a clever ploy to distract its members from throwing bricks at each other out on the streets, actual government is not really expected.
