Exclusive: and then there were six DUP candidates…

Okay, there’s some speculation on this morning’s thread about how long the list is and who might be on it. Slugger understands there are six so far and that, despite the speculation in press these names have been lodged with party headquarters for some weeks now. The names we have are as follows:

Deirdre Nelson
Diane Dodds
Robin Newton
David McIlveen (The son of the Rev McIlveen)
David Ryan
Roberta Patty-Coffey

,

  • Driftwood

Why not Michelle McIlveen? The most able candidate the DUP have got. By a mile. not that is saying much.

  • Mark McGregor

God, that’s a crap list. I do have a general interest in EU stuff as you know and I can’t say I’ve ever come across any interest from anyone in that group – ever. Not once, not a single time and I’m sad enough to cache EU stuff.

Maybe the DUP will enlighten us in coming weeks with their analysis – should be a pisser the moment they are got off brief.

  • Dupper

If this list is for real, we might as well just hand this election to Jim Allister on a plate. I am amazed that, at this late stage, the party is still not able to persuade a single, named, major player to enter this contest. It is a disgrace.

  • Dewi

Patty – Coffey? – sorry to digress but need to know etymology – what sort of name is that?

  • cynic

    Inspiring!!!!

  • Mark McGregor

I’m thinking 6 people trying for the 1st time n their ouffs to understand the 3 pillars or concilliation and codecision and I’mseeing a big list of people that couldn’t pass a GCSE on Europe.

Hey Diana, you want to run for Europe: ‘Tell me about agricutural policy while I wet myself’

  • nineteensixtyseven

The quality of that list is a testament to the priority the DUP place on Europe. None. We need an effective voice for the people of the North, someone involved in one of the larger voting blocs who can make a difference.

  • Not being a DUP member might explain my ignorance, but who on earth are the last three?

David McIlveen (The son of the Rev McIlveen)
    David Ryan
    Roberta Patty-Coffey

Not one of them, AFAIK, has played any active role in politics in the past 10 or 12 years.

If the Euro Parliament is seen as a ‘starter job’ by the DUP, then they might as well back out of the race now!

  • Cushy Glenn

    “God, that’s a crap list.”

Well yes, but criticism from a man who once tried to persuade us that Barbre de Brun was a serious politician is a wee bit rich.

Oh by the way, what’s the Shinner selection box like again?

I agree that the DUP have never given Europe a high priority.

The undeniable fact- and one that Jim Allister should focus on to the exclusion of the current local farce at Stormont- is that his record is by far and away the best of any Unionist in Europe. Forget his politics and focus on his work for NI , and any thinking Unionist will need a good reason to look past him.

NB Good reasons do not include-
“oooh, if the big bad Shinner tops the poll we’ll all be doomed and the border will collapse”
    or
“Well I’m in a big group at Strasbourg and I’ve been here so long they made me the man who decides what type of biscuits they order in the members’ canteen”

    DUPPER

Slow work day at 139 Holywood Road?

  • Steve Biko

That list is a bit rubbish, there is essentially one name on it and that is Nigel Dodds! all they can hope for is to put up Diane, keep her away from the cameras and direct confrontation with Allister – and stick up some poster with simply “Dodds” on, its not like it would be the first time they tried that.

Its not really a top brass list, its more like a list of the most ambitious from the bottom rung.

  • ZoonPol

Which of them are MLAs and / or councillors, which are prepared to accept the moral position of ‘one person one job’, and which actually want to do the job?

  • bisto

    Steve

I would imagine the DUP would relish direct confontation with Allister. The more exposure the sneering Jim gets, the less people like him.

  • GGN

    Dewi,

90% sure its ‘Descendent of the victorious one’.

  • Cushy Glenn

..except Diane isn’t exactly Zoe Salmon either, bisto- more a sort of Iris lite

  • little miss muffet

I had heard the Willie McCrea had considered running! He has always worked hard for the farmers and the people know who he is! He is also a good representative for South Antrim and has always worked hard for us! Diane is a good enough politician with some brains as for the others – don’t have a clue who they are.

  • jone

I hear Hugh McHee, Davina Starborgling and Colin Filing-Cabinet may also be about to throw their hats in the ring.

  • ??

Lets face it who was Jim Allister when he was picked 5 years ago, the majority of people hadnt heard of him and the majority will forget him just as easily after the next election

  • Cushy Glenn

little miss muffet is clearly inhaling from a class a tuffet. Even a deeply cynical politico like our first monster knows how Wullie would be a disaster in Strasbourg- hence the call from the wilderness in the first place for Allister, who was well enough known in the party and church, unlike some of the new wannabes

    jone is also wrong
Colin Filing-Cabinet is being kept back for a tilt at South Belfast. Meanwhile, rising Young DUP star Shug Baptie has said he wants to go for the coveted Armoy council seat in 2011. And Reverend Elfire N’damnashun is currently missing in action, running Bibles in Afghanistan for the Bob Jones University…

Meanwhile, in Stormont Peter Weir sits by himself in the canteen muttering “Where did it all go wrong?”

Re: In from the cold out from the cold and now out in the cold wilderness Allister
“hence the call from the wilderness in the first place for Allister, who was well enough known in the party and church, unlike some of the new wannabes”

Well enough known in the first place! I don’t think so! Many people who I spoke to at the time had never heard of him and many now still only know him as someone who attacks the DUP policy he endorsed and as someone who has no time respond to questions regarding the bread and butter issuses that are important to the voting public! I myself have emailed his office several times and had no response and have tried to contact his collegues his party regarding several matters the response being raise it with the relevant department!

  • surprised

I heard the Polish guy from the DUP conference was a strong contender for a while.

  • Cushy Glenn

“Well enough known in the first place! I don’t think so!”

    Wow.
The airbrushers must have been out in force in the 1990s after Jim had the temerity to cross the Big Man and try to stand in East Antrim against Roy Beggs

Just to remind you- since obviously you’re no more from the 1970s than I am from the planet Tharg
    – he was the man who ran Paisley’s European office from 1979-1982
    Assembly member from 1982-1986
Chief Whip IIRC of the DUP group at Stormont
    Councillor in Newtownabbey
parliamentary candidate in East Antrim, losing by a handful of votes
Indeed, there was talk of Big Ian switching in 1983 to run in East Antrim and give the local Allister the shoo in of North Antrim. To the amazement of the UUP Ian bottled it, personal insecurity costing his party a seat
He was much more highly thought of than Dodds or Wilson at that time by party insiders, many of whom tried to persuade him to stay on in politics.

But hey, that’s the problem in Stalinist organisations. I mean, poor old Khrushchev didn’t exist in Brezhnev’s era either…

  • 1970’s babe

I am indeed from the 1970’s and have birth certificate to prove it!

In my original post I did not say I did not know who he was. – I knew who he was and many of his previous positions in the party! My family have had close links to him over the years and in the previous EU Elections I backed his nomination. My point was that he had lost his profile and many younger voters ie those who did not grow up following closely the political scene in NI did not know him! Those who follow slugger tend to be people who know a bit about local politics but the general public tend to remember those who are in the media spotlight at the time or those more memorable characters and Jim was not one of those despite his many accomplishments.
He may have ran the EU Office for many years for Doc – just a pity his current staff are not as efficient and helpful as he was in bygone days! Maybe he should return to Traditional Unionism and help the people of NI rather than a handful of his good friends who followed him down the road to nowhere!

The funniest thing I have read on Slugger in a long time. Bravo!
