Shortest [unelected] term for SF councillor?

Having noted [Lisburn City Council] Sinn Féin Councillor Sam Baker’s [still no relation] criticism of the principal of St Colm’s High School, Twinbrook, in September last year, I feel obliged to also note this Irish News story today. [subs req]

Councillor Sam Baker was co-opted onto the seat in October 2006 following the sudden death of party colleague and west Belfast assembly member Michael Ferguson. The unopposed move meant a by-election was avoided. However, just over two years later, Mr Baker has resigned his seat without ever going before the electorate. Sinn Féin representative for the Colin area Arder Carson is the new candidate and is hoping to be co-opted on tonight. Mr Baker is to take up a new role within the party as ‘political organiser’ at Belfast City Council.

I hope you are not implying that he has suffered a belt of the crozier.

some years ago Brendan Lewis stood down from Nerwy and Mourne council allowing Connor Murphy to be co opted. Then, just a few years ago, having been re elected Lewis ‘voluntarily’ stood down again to allow Connor’s brothet Turloch get co opted!! A whole new form of democracy.Brendan is now an ‘independent’ member of the local DPP.

    yeah, so what.

if QE2 voluntarily stands down, Chuck becomes the new monarch. Is there a problem? …

Dynasties are Dynasties are Dynasties and we, the plebs, should not question the perogatives of our betters.

Indeed, but it’s not a bit of harm for us to let loose the occasional harrumph.

  • wild turkey

    harrumph?

haven’t heard that one in ages! thanks

Sometimes I think I live in a warehouse full of harrumphs but my kids say it brings us close together as a family.

    good luck

Not so much a belt of the crozier, as a promotion for young talent. The party’s long lease on Lisburn has diminished rapidly now the broad outline of the boundary changes have put Twinbrook back into the Belfast area.

Strange at first sight; but evidence of sound foresight on the part of the party…

  • Lisburn

    TUV Councillor Cecil Calvert objected.

    There will be a by-election.

  • ZoonPol

Well on one hand I am glad as its repulsive to think any Party would use a privileged role as a public representative to show-case talent but then didn’t the DUP do in under the Trimble First Minister show when they played rotating ministries with Campbell et al?

Another guilty planter to keep Morrison and Adams company?

Still, no problem with the electoral slogan- just a wee dip into the history books-
    “Arder Carson had a cat
    It sat upon a stool
And every time he poked at it
    It shouted “Dublin rule!””

  • dunreavynomore

    Mick
‘sound foresight on the part of the party’.
No doubt that it is but where do the electorate fit in? Is there not something wrong with using the co option system as a political tool? How about deciding that if a politician steps down without good, non political reason, he or she forfeits the seat.

    Cushy Glenn
    In my childhood it was
    “De Valera had a cat
    That sat upon the fender
And every time he pulled its tail
    It shouted ‘no surrender'”

Then there was one that went something like “God bless De Valera and Sean McEntee,
For giving us the brown bread and the half ounce of tea.”

SF in Lisburn seem to be struggling to find anyone of any calibre since the untimely death of Michael Ferguson. They have a young female councillor drafted in after the SDLP claimed to have Ireland’s youngest councillor sitting in Lisburn. O’Hara is her name seems harmless enough but an astute politician? Hardly they cant allow her to speak without a script for fear she’ll put her both feet in it and at a recent event admitted she didn’t know who Mairead Farrell was which would be fair enough if it wasnt for the fact that the SF office in the area she is elected is named after the dead IRA woman!
