‘Cop slapped pregnant woman’

“I was there because I heard my partner had been arrested and I wanted to get my car keys from him. I went over to see what was happening and it was then that police started pushing me back. I shouted to them that I was pregnant and then one of them hit me on the chin. It left me with a small bruise on my face,”

  • charliemuck

Why has the video been slowed down???Would we miss it otherwise???

I suspect that in real-time there was barely contact.

Nobody around her seems to react anyway??

  • Oilifear

“I suspect that in real-time there was barely contact. Nobody around her seems to react anyway??”

charliemuck, if it was a matter of a scuffle between people that comment would be more than what fairness demands. But that was a police officer slapping someone across the face while on duty. Whether he missed, knocked her out or “barely [made] contact”, the issue is the same: cops don’t strike people while on duty. It demands a serious bringing to book for the officer involved.

  • Sharon

Super fly jab, but if the lady was really interested in her unborn child she shouldn’t have been putting it through such a stressful event. She might as well down a bottle of vodka and smoke an 1/8th.

  • LURIG

From the media coverage it was quite clear that the PSNI officer connected with a left jab on the woman’s face AND she appeared to be walking away from the incident too. That is NOT acceptable policing in any society though the usual suspects will come on here and defend his actions. The cop knew exactly what he what doing and should take the consequences.

  • Ulsters my homeland

The incident in question seems to be a reaction. I watched the clip a few times and it appears to me that the lady in question actually put her hand up first, (be it in defense or attack) which most likely made the Police officer to react in punching out

  • Peter

Congratulations to Mark for slowing the footage down, as it appears the woman is the first one to hit out.

  • Ulsters my homeland

Yes, she definitely lifts her hand as she’s walking away.

  • RepublicanStones

The woman may be the first one to hit out, but im sure the police, like the military are governed by a set of rules regarding acceptable force commensurate with threat level. Slapping a woman on the face after she has hit you on the arm is not acceptable in anyones book.

  • charliemuck

If i had have saw this in person i wouldnt have thought twice about it. I dont think officers should have free reign to be as physical as they want, but the officer hasnt wound up a punch or given her the back of his hand!Mountain and molehill come to mind…
Unfortunately these days there are far too many people ready to jump on our officers backs when their job is already made tough enough for them.

  • Earnan

What is this women doing gettin in an argument like that if she’s so goddamn pregnant?

She made movements toward the cop, he reacted.

Also, she didnt exactly get a uppercut from Mike Tyson.

RepublicanStones, the first time I seem it, I thought the copper definitely was in the wrong, but after looking at the slowed down footage a few times, it seems he was reacting to her hitting out at him.

  • Ulsters my homeland

it also seems as if the copper pulled back when he punched. It’s a reactionary punch. If the woman hadn’t hit out first, the copper wouldn’t have reacted.

  • Ulsters my homeland

That copper’s pretty quick, wouldn’t fancy getting into a scuffle with him.

  • RepublicanStones

UMH, its all about an accpetable level of force to acheieve your objective. There was no call for the slap. Unarmed restraint by weight of numbers is the first port of call, not a dig in the face.

‘That copper’s pretty quick, wouldn’t fancy getting into a scuffle with him.’

Women beaters aren’t usually any good in a fair fight.

  • LURIG

It did seem to be a fairly evenly weighted contest though.

  • Ulsters my homeland

RS, acceptable level of force doesn’t come into this case, as it’s a reaction. It’s like someone hitting you below the kneecap, you can’t help but react.

..as for your woman beaters post. Please don’t go there. I was responding to the coppers reactions, they’re pretty sharp. Glad to see sharp cops on the beat, instead of fat lardies!

  • RepublicanStones

A reaction maybe, but one which should see this policeman disciplined. His training would involve dealing with just this kind of scenario to not react in this way.

  • Ulsters my homeland

Blinking is an involuntary reaction. Slapping someone in the face is a reaction which results in emotion and a thought process. Police training would involve scenarios just like this.

  • Earnan

I would have liked to see the previous 10 seconds before this.

Also, what did her husband get arrested for? Trying to blow up policeman?
It might affect how the police officer would react.

As a general rule, never touch a police officer. Here in the states Assault on a Police Officer (which can cover many many things as a friend of mine found out) is a Felony with a min 6 month conviction (at least in my state). I’m sure NI has similarly tough rules.

To sum up horrible nasty slapper gets a slap from an ugly big peeler, ugly big peeler will be disciplined, horrible nasty slapper will hopefully go home and I’ll never have to see her again (she can spend the compo claim she gets off the PSNI on a lifetime’s supply of pizzas from Paolo’s).

In all seriousness – how is anyone meant to divine that this woman is actually pregnant? To the objective observer the ‘incident’ could be described thus – “Bunch of trots begin acting the bollocks and are properly arrested. An obese woman begins trying to interfere in one of the arrests, slaps at a cop who is properly and legitimately trying to prevent her interfering in the arrest and he then (in perhaps a slight over-reaction)slaps her back (her pantomime reaction to the slap is risible). If this woman was pregnant then she should be asking more questions of herself than the cops….

  • salem

The fact that no one else reacts to her being hit – says it all I am afraid !

She got nothing more than a tap on the chin and its looks like the cop was reacting to her lifting her hand first.

class slap from the cop! best ad ive seen for corrective smacking of children aswell as adults. notice the way she went from pushing and shoving to turning and walking away. the short clip here doesnt show the pulling and hauling between the ‘peaceful protesters’ and the cops that i saw on the news last night. wonder why that is mark?? 🙂

Well, good to see the majority of slugger crowd reverting to type, cos I don’t like surprises. I could have picked out who would have supported this and sure enough…only missing willow. She might be this that and the other, but police men slapping people is not on in most western democracies. Glad to see Northern Ireland is still a few years behind. Seems like about 70-80% of the commentators here, feel it is perfectly acceptable for police to slap people that annoy them if they don’t like the protest. Outside Northern Ireland it’s actually NOT ok to hit women, sometimes no matter what the provocation, glad to see most of you find it all too acceptable, and on your tax dollars too. He’s 14 odd stone, armed with a taser, baton and firearm with a stab vest on and surrounded by his colleagues. Exactly what harm/pain can she cause apart from annoyance!? You might not agree with the protest (fair enough), but this seems to be getting used to justify whatever action the police want here, and frankly by the sound of it, if you guys were running the country sounds like protesting would be treated pretty harshly….what a lovely place you make this! well done 80% of the sluggar crowd…

  • Did republicans ever protest at the semtex factory or fertiliser manufacturers??? Who made the SAM7? was there ever a protest there?

Just doing some research on republicans and their balance/attitude/reaction to various conflicts at home and abroad.

  • Ciaran Gallagher

I recorded and uploaded the footage after I saw it on BBC Newsline. I would have included the full clip but I had problems getting Windows Movie Maker to publish longer videos. The reason it is slowed down because the BBC only broadcast a couple of seconds of the clip. Seen from another angle though, she walked up to the officers, stood in front of her partner and said, “What’s the problem here” before being pushed by the officer. Then she shouted, “I’m pregnant you dickhead”, before being hit twice in the face (watch closely). There was enough impact to leave a bruise.

  • Greagoir O Frainclin

Perhaps boxing gloves should be issued to every NI police officer.

Any chance of them teaming up with Kenny Egan and getting into the boxing ring in London 2012 to win us a few more gold medals for Ireland.

BTW, it was hadly ‘police brutality’ although it was inappropriate, unprofessional and wrong of the police officer. I’m sure the cop in question is very handy with his fists. He’s boxed a few skulls before.
If the woman is preggars she should not have been there or so confrontational. Common sense really!

  • Harry Flashman

“There was enough impact to leave a bruise.”

    Really?

It looks more to me like she’s raising her hand to the cop and he instinctively flicks up his left hand to deflect it, I’d imagine that the peeler’s hand barely connected with her, I’d be extremely surprised if that left a bruise, all in all much ado about nothing and as anyone who has read any of my recent posts can confirm I’m no slavish supporter of cops when they do wrong but this stuff is nothing really.

  • eranu

greagoir, the medals would go to Team GB & NI to give it its full name 🙂 although if you got the guards involved , Ireland (Republic of) would probably clean up!

for some reason i cant help humming the tune to rocky 🙂

  • If I was him

If I was him, I’d say that I was merely pointing out the direction in which the lady was being ushered by my colleague. It was unfortunate that my hand made a minimal connection with her face, but this was entirely accidental.

    But I am not him.

  • Earnan

It is hard to say what is going on in that short, slowed down clip

I’m not sure but watching that clip in its slow motion gave me a good laugh.

So, what did her partner get arrested for? Why is she a tubby one?

  • Billyo

Of course the police officer would have had the benefit of the incident happening in slow time as in the video and he would have also known that the woman was about to walk away, and not press home her attack, given his police training in telling the future.

Anyone who has even a basic understanding of the human reaction times to a perceived threat would understand that by the time the officer processed her attempted strike in this case his physical reaction would happen after the threat had ebbed.

BTW I hope Raytheon are actively planning to move their factory, and the associated jobs, as the ‘host community’ don’t seem to want them.

  • Sean Connery

Theres worse things than slapping a pregnant woman.

Its not like he decked her. As others have said what was she doing at this protest in her advanced condition if she was really that worried. Storm in a tea cup.
