No UUP/Tory link up stories in this today, I’ll be doing a separate round up later (so get your blogs written up – pro and anti!)… Kicking off, the killing of Shane Geoghegan in Limerick last week has kicked off a whole tranche of discussion on Crime in the Republic… Over at the Irish Left Review, Paul O’Mahony notes the contrast in the heightened coverage now with the normally complacent view of gangland murders… In this podcast, O’Mahony inveighs against the normal reactive/regressive response to crime in Ireland… You can also catch him on last week’s Saturday View…- Suzy’s back with a fascinating report from Brussels (nice disclosure Suz!) and the EU’s full on charm offensive on Lisbon (II?). She’s not impressed with the line on how the Republic can have a commissioner if it really really wants one, when as she points out:
It might have been more useful to debate if having an Irish Commissioner is really of any use at all – the work of the Permanent Representatives Office in Brussels seems to be more important in analysing how Irish interests are represented.
– She points to Margot Wallstrom’s blog post (Contribution to the Oireachtas sub-committee here) on her recent visit to the Republic (they insist on calling it Ireland down there these days, that still means the island amongst us Nordies)…
– Niall picks up on more of Declan Ganley’s big plans for turning Libertas into a political party. He fisks Mr Ganley’s contribution to what Suzy refers to as the Oireachtas Sub-Committee on How to solve the Lisbon problem…
– Niall picks up on Sarah Carey who lifts the lid on a blanket ban on any pro EU writing in the Irish version of the paper (of which more later on Slugger)…
– P O’Neill reckons he’s found a cunning plan buried in the detail of the Republic’s latest finance bill: to entice British based non doms to live in Ireland…
It looks like there is a long-term plan to convince a few very rich people that they can flee whatever The Sun and Gordon Brown might have in mind for them to the safety of Dublin.
– Gavin with a fresh run of Downfall and the housing bubble bursting on Hitler’s nice car and flat screen tv…- Killian spreads some linky love with that story on Lisburn Council’s online poll…
– Ordovicius has wind of a Comres Poll that shows a proportion of Labour Assembly Members who support Welsh Independence…
– Valley’s Mam reflects on the warm noises emanating from the Senedd, but has yet to see some action…
– Thunder Dragon has a word of warning to MPs who want to use their communication allowance to blog: you may have to pay for it yourself…
I mentioned Malc’s constituency round up a few blogbursts ago. Here’s Argyle and Bute, which he was giving as a Lib Dem hold, which he’s now giving as a SNP gain, but it has got to be a top Tory target in Scotland (one of no more than five or six, even on a good night)…
– Those of you who’ve not seen Pete’s post on the Astronaut’s lost tool bag, go to Bock the Robber and scroll to the bottom…
