And about that live chat…

Speaking of lessons, Matt Wardman’s got one for me on my attempt to do a day long Live Blog… It was great fun with some great people focused on getting a good accurate picture from ground up as we could… but next time, we’ll endeavour to find a smoother more egalitarian solution… Thanks to all who participated in the conversation!!!

    I have only just now received the following text message on my mobile ‘phone;

    At the Pearly Gates, St Peter checks in an new arrival.

    “Who are you and what did you do on Earth?”

    “My Name is Barack Obama and I was the first Black President of the USA.”

    “Obama? Black President? USA? You’re shittin’ me, when did all this happen?”

    “About twenty minutes ago.”

    Of course it’s a variation on an old theme, but let us all pray that the theme is really and truly passé and that the joke can be appreciated only because of the comedy effect of the extreme unlikliness of its being replicated in reality rather than the grim ironic portent it might once have carried..

    It’s my recurring nightmare. I really hope I’m wrong but I’m wondering when, not if, some “angry lone nut” has a shot at him. I thought my generation’s “Kennedy moments” had happened with Challenger or Diana or 9/11 – I hope it stay’s that way.

    Of course stays instead of “stay’s” – I’m trying to feed my 9 month old son who incidentally was up with me to see Obama elected at whatever hour of the morning it was 🙂

    I found the live chat to be a troublesome experience. When I went to vote I could not get back up to speed with the conversation, get the news, put the kids to bed etc. It was 7pm East Coast time before someone pointed out that I could pause the scrolling.
    The smoking room was a much more comfortable blogging space where dark ale and good conversation were in abundance.
    It is raining here in PA this morning but there is hope for a bright new day dawining in the USA.

    oh ye of little faith -plus ca change plus c’est le meme chose according to the Onion anyway 😉

    ‘African-American man Barack Obama, 47, was given the least-desirable job in the entire country Tuesday when he was elected president of the United States of America. In his new high-stress, low-reward position, Obama will be charged with such tasks as completely overhauling the nation’s broken-down economy, repairing the crumbling infrastructure, and generally having to please more than 300 million Americans and cater to their every whim on a daily basis. As part of his duties, the black man will have to spend four to eight years cleaning up the messes other people left behind. The job comes with such intense scrutiny and so certain a guarantee of failure that only one other person even bothered applying for it. Said scholar and activist Mark L. Denton, “It just goes to show you that, in this country, a black man still can’t catch a break.”

    Obama won the popular vote by 7 million that’s 4 million more than Bush won by in 2004 and 6.5 million more than Gore won /lost by in 2000.

    Obama has a tough job on his hands no question, But he has shown over the past 21 months that he has the political skill to win over opponents to his cause . Let’s not forget he defeated the Clinton machine and the Karl Rove /Cheney shower of ultra rightist warmongers .

    America has moved on.

    Meanwhile back in NI it’s back to the trenches of unreason and the politics of backward looking gobshites , who can see no further than the next bowl of subvention money that Mr Brown waves in front of their orange/green snouts 🙁
