The story of a sockpuppet…

We have our fair share of sockpuppets on Slugger. But Tory Troll thinks he’s spotted Andrew Gilligan, late of the BBC, more latterly buster-in-chief of the former Mayor of London Ken Livingston at the Evening Standard, on various blogs and adopting various sockpuppetity guises…

    >>We have our fair share of sockpuppets on Slugger.<

  • Ri Na Deise

Whats a sockpuppet? Is it akin to a WUM?

  • cynic

I would love to be a sockpuppet ….but then you have to be someone first. I’m just a cynic. Bugger

  • Rory

    Sockpuppets should be banned.

  • Rory

I agree with Rory. He really makes sense on this.

  • Rory

I hear he’s quite the looker as well.

  • andrew giligan

i have to put my hands up and say that this story is completely true. i have been sockpupetting regularly.

  • real andrew giligan

    OUTRAGEOUS!!
the person above is not me, i am the real andrew giligan and i have never sockpuppeted

  • 100% kosher giligan

aye right. the 2 posters above are clearly puppets (or trolls). i am the real one. look, they can’t even spell my name right.

  • Mick Fealty

You did ask Ri. There’s a link to the wikipedia entry on it above.

  • Ann

    This thread is hilarious!!!

  • PaddyReilly

Are we not all sockpuppets in the mind of God?

And besides, what is a malign sockpuppet? How is malignity to be judged?

  • KieranJ

Mick described me as a sockpuppet on another thread. I have posted approximately fifteen messages on this websight over a two year period and I have never used a name other than KieranJ. I am an Irish American with many relatives in the Republic where I visit quite often.

My knowledge of Irish history is very extensive and I am a devout Irish republican whose ancestors were forced to leave their homeland because of British oppression. I consider Eamon de Valera the founding father of modern Ireland and I place him along side George Washigton in stature.

That will be all for now.

  • Jer

“I consider Eamon de Valera the founding father of modern Ireland and I place him along side George Washigton in stature.”

    Hmm Sock puppet or muppet?

Oh and why not come back here to live? We don’t have enough people like you in Ireland.

PS If you send me the address of the institution you are confined in I will send flowers.

  • KieranJ

Actually, Cynic, I live in a very nice home in Pennsylvania and I’m willing to bet hard money that my two car garage is worth more than your residence.

  • cynic

Oh KieranJ. I am so upset.

    That remark shows two things:

1 that you have as much idea of NI houseprices as you do of its politics

2 what a remarkably shallow person you really are.

Have fun playing with your double garage. Try that game where you see if you can get both doors to synchronise as they go up an down. I am sure you will find it entertaining.

  • cynic

If I am already a sock puppet and then change my name again on here what do I then become?

  • PaddyReilly

Talking of NI house prices how are they these days? I expect the only thing that keeps them high in certain folks’ imagination is the fact that nobody is buying them any more.

  • joeCanuck

If I am already a sock puppet and then change my name again on here what do I then become?

    An unfaithful sock puppet.

  • Ann

    Or a sock puppet impersonator?

  • Rory

    Q. What did the sock puppet say when a hole was
    blown in his cover?

    A. Darn!

    Ok. Ok! I’m going’….

  • cynic

    PaddyReilly

In answer to your question, it depends.

On average down perhaps 25% to 30% but if its an ex Housing Executive / Buy to Let / Boxy Apartment or not in a ‘good’ area , the drop is more like 40% – 50%.

Of course this is all fanciful as there are few sellers at these levels, even fewer buyers and banks wont give mortgages, no matter what Gordon tells them to do.

  • Comrade Khrushchev

This sockpuppet thing is fantastic fun.

  • Mick Fealty

    Paddy,

That’s a function of the housing market all over surely. 2 bed bungalows are still tagged at 229,000 in the window where I am, but doubt any have sold in the last 6 months, and any that do are going at a hell of a discount. Don’t know what it’s like with you. But everybody is sitting tight here.

And please, don’t feed the trolls!!

  • Those of us obliged to live in the Great Wen (even if this week elsewhere) have other ways to describe the Gilligoon, whose natural home is the equally-appalling Evening Boris.

Hint: try http://www.boriswatch.co.uk (sorry haven’t worked out how to hot-link on a iPod touchscreen).

Sorry, too, not to maintain the general hilarity and mirth. Enjoy yourselves. Meanwhile, a thought:

Whenever I hear an unsolicited partial opinion, I find myself recalling Alexander Pope’s epigram “Engraved on the Collar of a Dog, Which I Gave to His Majesty”:

I am his Majesty’s dog at Kew,
Pray tell me, Sir, whose dog are you?”

    Woof!

  • cynic

    Troll? Moi?

I thought I had made some erudite and perceptive comments on other threads

Please excuse me, there are a lot of internet crimes around it seems that I didn’t even know existed. I have just about got my brain around sockpuppeting. But I can’t for the life of me see how KieronJ is meant to have committed it. The original fault was committed, you seem to think, in the course of an interchange between KieronJ and Republican Stones. Are they the same person? I think we should be told. They didn’t seem to be saying the same thing at all at all.

Of course you probably see everyone’s URL and so know these things. Mind you if you ban it, they’ll all have to keep nipping down to the Internet Caff.

Mind you the king of all the sockpuppets preceded the invention of the Internet forum. Peter Cook, claiming to be Sven of Swiss Cottage, a discharged Norwegian Fisherman, was a regular on various London Local Radio phone ins. But he did this for a laff, and was widely appreciated. He wasn’t what you might call malign. So what is malign? We have not been told.
