“the situation has not changed..”

Three weeks after the initial threats were made against NCP parking attendants in west Belfast and they have still not returned to the streets. Can we say it’s a no-go area yet?

Nipsa’s John Corey said the situation has not changed. “We do not believe it is right that any chances should be taken with the health and safety of these workers,” he said. NCP, which operates the service for the DRD, was told of the threat by the PSNI.

    I’d imagine it is a no-go area. It certainly seems to be for the PSNI whenever there’s crime to be solved.

  • same old story

    They do not want to work in West Belfast full stop. Last year an iron bar was thrown at one of them and they withdrew the service from the area. It took elected Sinn Féin reps to go on ‘patrol’ with them for them to come back.

    In England there has a litany of attacks (much worse than was experienced above) but I don’t see traffic wardens withdrawing from West Manchester or West Birmingham after physical attacks, let alone threats.

    There is no argument that they should ever be put in danger for doing their very needful job, but maybe they should take a leaf out of their counterpart’s book across the water and get on with the job they are paid to do

    Why the persistent silence from the politicans? Are we back to one set of rules for the lawbreakers and another for the rest?

    If this wonderful “shared future” is an example of the “vision” and moving into the 21st century touted by the Folks on the Hill should visitors to the RVH just park anywhere on the Falls or Grosvenor Roads?

    I work near Sandy Row. The parking meter machines have all been systematically destroyed, ripped off their pedestals. Accordingly, most of the cars parked along Sandy Row don’t have receipts visible.

    The paramilitary blight which infests our community and engages in this sort of thing needs to be confronted. I don’t understand why the PSNI are not willing to approach this with surveillance/undercover policing. Why don’t they dress up as traffic wardens, with an undercover armed response unit nearby, and enter the “no go” areas to draw out those who would attack them ?

    Why can’t it be a No go area, for Debt Collectors, Baliffs, TV licenceing agents,SSA agents, irresponsible private landlords etc etc as well as a private company collecting fines at every and any opportunity?, I even seen these guys ticketing cars at a Funeral!!!!
    For me a normal and civil society does not include the above, they exist to perpetuate a corrupt broken society that the government created.a system to the betterment of the buisness-capitalist and political classes.
    I cant really condemn this threat (im trying to though), maybe its my sense of social justice, sometimes just sometimes it needs to be expressed in a forceful way.To balance things up so to speak.Was’nt that happening for the past 35 years?
    On a point of interest, will Sinn Fein condemn baliffs and debt collectors who will terrorise the working class of West Belfast who refuse or cant pay the illegal water charges? are charge they want? just a thought!

    Let me just get this straight, Jimmy. You think that legal access should be denied to :

    – anyone attempting to recover a debt;
    – anyone attempting to ensure that the legal TV license is paid;
    – anyone attempting to ensure social security fraud is not taking place;
    – anyone collecting fines from people who park illegally.

    Basically, you reckon that anyone who breaks the law, borrows money and refuses to give it back or pay their dues, should be given legal protection from the law ?

    Exactly where would that lead us ?

    There’s a very easy way to avoid this shit :

    – don’t borrow money without repaying it
    – don’t operate a television, unless you intend to pay the legally-mandated fee for doing so; and
    – don’t park your car in places where a fee is required for doing so

    These legally supported measures will, in themselves, prevent the oppression of the West Belast citizens along those lines. Why not follow those rules ?
