Obama playing better abroad than at home?

Whatever you think about Barack Obama he has a certain brilliance in how he handles the media. But even after all the plaudits in Europe and an extremely tired and ropey campaign from John McCain his media qualities do not appear to be playing for him in the national polls. Think World Cup Final in 1974 (those of you who can remember that far back). 70 minutes of Dutch Total Football and one goal; twenty minutes of German precision, two goals and the championship of world soccer!

‘Too many Americans with AIDS are diagnosed late, after the virus has already damaged the immune system beyond repair, he said.

Not just diagnosed late with Aids but with everything else as well thus driving up the cost of health care treatment even more than it needs to . And given that 50 million Americans have none or little access to preventative health care treatment due to the absence of proper health insurance or it’s prohibitive cost for the rising numbers of the American poor.

The fact that the above situation puts the rest of America at greater risk has escaped limitless powers of non observation.

‘I’ve been to Cuba more than a few times.’

So you have been breaking American law .

As I understand it the U.S. government prohibits its citizens from traveling to Cuba by forbiding the spending of money in Cuba under the Trading with the Enemy Act. .

But then you of course you are a ‘Republican ‘ patriot and you don’t have to obey the law 🙁

It’s because of the millions of gobshites like yourself that the present administration can even afford to ignore the American Constitution and get away with it .

Susan: “We chastise individual borrowers, ignoring how many sophisticated and institutional investors—including pension funds, school systems, etc.—were also depending on mortgage-based securities. I don’t yet know what the full implications of the US mortgage meltdown will mean for the global economy, and neither does anyone else.”

So, in other words, for the benefit of a collection of fools, those who kept their noses clean and kept their own houses in order should be penalized.

Has it occurred to you that you have the whole thing entirely backwards? Rewarding failures and picking the pockets of those who succeed.

susan: “Instead, expect increasingly hysterical and highly charged discussions of race, religion, and sexualised imagery—from Dread’s image of a pimp”

I forgot — extended metaphor is wasted on the humorless.

Greenflag: “Not very for anybody who has gone through second level education and actually paid attention to those courses where ‘numbers ‘ were taught . As I understand it the standard for ‘basic math and science teaching at the elementary and secondary (high school levels) in the USA ‘ is behind most of the larger EU countries and many of the emerging Asian nations.”

“Greater than” and “less than” are taught in primary schools, Greenflag.

As for your longish bit regarding mortgages, I would submit that actual fraud, where provable, should be prosecuted to the fullest extent, with the guilty being nailed to the wall with the largest spikes available. I am aware of one case, relatively locally, where the agent, the loan officer and the house appraiser were all related. In these cases, frankly, a short trip out into the Sound and a couple of buckets of cement would cover the needs.

The Keating Five — might you remember who the Five are? Allow me to refresh your memory…

“The five senators, Alan Cranston (D-CA), Dennis DeConcini (D-AZ), John Glenn (D-OH), John McCain (R-AZ), and Donald W. Riegle (D-MI), were accused of improperly aiding Charles H. Keating, Jr.”

Funny how you only remember “red” scandal and none of the blue — fairly one eyed, ain’tcha, Greenflag?

I could quote you chapter and verse, but it really doesn’t matter — I have already acknowledge they’re a parliment of whores — you’re too busy cherry-picking to realize DC smells like a whorehouse at low tide and susan would have us believe that her preferred whores small like lilac.

The moot point being ‘provable’ . The extent of deregulation in the financial services sector over the past several decades has been such that only a very small number of the ‘worst’ cases reach the ‘media ‘ . From Bear Stearns to Enron to Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and World Com etc etc the list is

No need – The post was long enough and other than Senator McCain the politicians involved are ancient history -not sure about former astronaut Senators Glenn . It was as much due to their personal qualities as to their ‘politics’ that both McCain and Glenn were able to retain their political careers .

When Americans go to the polls they at least get to choose which group of whores will screw them the most or the least. Their general experience these past 7 years has led a majority of them to conclude that the present incumbents have long since shed their whore status, and have instead ‘progressed ‘ to the highest level possible the predatory political universe. GOP now would appear to stand for Grand Old Pimps 🙁

    Dread Chutlu ,

‘Or a student, a film-maker, a journalist or any one of a collection of categories. ‘

I know . I was being as ‘intellectually honest ‘ with Bfb as he was being with me . We call it ‘winding up’ . I avoid the practice in any serious thread when dealing with those who try to keep to the facts and appear to be serious about their take. Bfb is of the ‘my country right or wrong ‘ vintage alas a philosophy I have never adhered to nor could ever . He forgets that whereas Europe may have problems with America the world power or more precisely the way that power has been utilised during this incumbency -Americans are still much admired and respected as people throughout Europe which is one reason why I believe several million have moved there and elsewhere over the past decade as per the recent US News and World Report magazine .

On the ‘macro ‘ level and back to the thread I expect the Dems to win the House of Representatives and Senate decisively and probably the Presidency too . They could lose the latter if the vote is tight in the so called battleground states . Obama may yet pick the wrong VP and his strategy of investing in ‘red ‘ states may backfire . McCain is hampered by the ‘fall out ‘ from the economic crisis , the war and the general perception among Americans that the country is on the wrong road .

I sense the USA is going to see a backlash against the ‘free marketeers ‘ similar to the one which Britain went through following the Thatcher experiment . Whether the Democrats rise to the occassion with a new dispensation and do what needs to be done to reverse the decades long slide is another story . The historical precedent has been that decline feeds off itself until the bottom has been reached and then a new start becomes possible . Obama would appear to have the both options open to him either pushing further to the bottom or reversing the decline . McCain seems to following the horses that have already dragged the USA to the edge of doom . The voters have’nt noticed any change in McCain’s admonitions to said horses other than keep going lads -at the bottom of the cliff everything will work out just fine !

Will the bottom been reached by November ? Can’t see it .

Greenflag: “Perhaps you live outside the worst affected areas such as California , Florida , etc.”

    Sadly, I do not.

Greenflag: “When Americans go to the polls they at least get to choose which group of whores will screw them the most or the least. Their general experience these past 7 years has led a majority of them to conclude that the present incumbents have long since shed their whore status…”

Again, I would disagree — so long as the Democrats are (and are seen as) deliberately harming the economy of the United States by reinforcing US dependence on foreign oil by blocking access to US reserves, it will be a push.

The approval rating of the Congress is 14% — about half of that of the President. Offshore drilling has an approval rating of about 75%, last I checked, and has broken 50% in California.

Greenflag: “He forgets that whereas Europe may have problems with America the world power or more precisely the way that power has been utilised during this incumbency -Americans are still much admired and respected as people throughout Europe which is one reason why I believe several million have moved there and elsewhere over the past decade as per the recent US News and World Report magazine . ”

Uh-huh… which is why it’s always “Yankee go home,” right up until the Yanks start to discuss their travel plans, at which point someone realized that when the Americans leave, be they tourists or NATO garrison forces, they is always a great whining as to why are the mean ol’ Americans “punishing” their economy. I seem to recall the Germans expecting “economic aid” or some foolishness if the 1st AD is removed from their German bases.

Greenfag: “McCain is hampered by the ‘fall out ‘ from the economic crisis , the war and the general perception among Americans that the country is on the wrong road”

Not so you’d noticed — tied (statistically speaking) in the last daily tracking poll. He’s down three points in Michigan, which is ludicrous, given that state’s deep blue politics and strong union presence. Of course, Michigan, the prolonged one state recession (economic note, the US is not in a recession, despite the careless fashion the word is bandied about, however, Michigan has been…)

Greenflag: “I sense the USA is going to see a backlash against the ‘free marketeers ‘ similar to the one which Britain went through following the Thatcher experiment . Whether the Democrats rise to the occassion with a new dispensation and do what needs to be done to reverse the decades long slide is another story .”

The slide has more to do with Democratic feel-good legislation than Bush or the Republicans. The deregulation of the banking industry was as much an effort to “liberalize” lending practices, tarted up as “fighting redlining” (i.e. making banks lend to folks who shouldn’t get loans for houses they shouldn’t be buying).

The Democrats, left to their own devices, will recreate the first Clinton term — they will go over the proverbial edge, go places that the American middle is not comfortable with, try to tax their way to prosperity and royally screw the pooch — the bulk of the Keating Five, all the named indicted in Abscam, William Jefferson of the $90K in his freezer — DC seems to have a corrosive effect on the elected.

Obama is an empty suit — a Chicago bag man, complete with felonious mentors / funders. He has enough loose ends to pull and, when off of the teleprompter, sounds a hell of a lot like Bush. He’s starting to attract hecklers, btw.

Oh, and for the record, there are two “t”s and two “h”s in Cthulhu.

Funny how the Act of Union and religious persecution in Ireland has given rise to the fortunes and indeed the very existence of both Presidential candidates With a Gaelic name like McCain somebody out there may be able to dig up why the McCain forebear left Co Derry in the 1780’s ?

But we are beginning to hear more as to how Obama’s Irish forebears left Offaly and Dublin as per an item in today’s Irish Times .

Kearney (one of Obama’s Irish ancestors ) became a Freeman of Dublin in 1718, giving him the right to practice his trade, conduct business in the capital and have a vote in elections for the city council.

Within a decade of joining he was elected Master of the Guild of Barber Surgeons. Not afraid of confrontation, when the aristocracy tried to rig Dublin City Council elections in the 1750s to put in their own candidates Kearney was prominent among the Dublin Guildsmen in opposing them.

After the 1780s the fortunes of this line of the Kearney family went into a fairly rapid decline due to a combination of the economic changes brought about after the Act of Union in 1801 ( NOTHING NEW THERE )

In May a Church of Ireland rector found Mr Obama’s fourth great-grandfather – Joseph Kearney – was a shoemaker from Moneygall in Co Offaly, whose son Fulmuth emigrated for the US in 1850.

“Apart from the obvious interest of a link to a US presidential candidate, the story of the Kearney family of Moneygall is a fascinating story in itself,” Ms Fitzsimons (researcher at Trinity College ) said.

Cthulhu has also been spelled as Tulu, Clulu, Clooloo, Cighulu, Cathulu, Kutulu, Q’thulu, Ktulu, Kthulhut, Kulhu, Thu Thu,[2] and in many other ways. It is often preceded by the epithet Great, Dead, or Dread.

    Harry Flash –

There’ll be no return to the 60’s. But the Tories will not be going to the polls next time out promising the electorate that they are going to get rid of the NHS and replace it with the more ‘effective and efficient ‘ American Privatised Health Care Model. Well not unless they want to see Gordon Brown returned as PM.
