The long and the short of it…

My colleague over at the Telegraph, Robert Colville has spotted a certain advantage that may accrue to Obama over McCain, should the former get the Democrat nomination to run for US President…

At last back to US read this for the critical democratic primary. And I hear that Clinton is trying to count Michigan and Florida delegates – this could get really nasty.

In my lifetime I have experienced 3 attempted coup de etats in the USA

    1. JFK Dallas 63
    2. Watergate
    3. Dubya Bush 2000

2 of the 3 have origins or outcomes in Texas.

Texas could be ominous for Obama. I hope I am so so wrong on this one that I am gladly willing to let Bobby from Boston have a go at me. By the by, liked your post on the missle. If it misses boston or Florida and hits Fox News HQ instead, BfB would be, uh, lost for words

  • Greenflag

Seen in the USA a car sticker

    ‘Buck Fush ‘

They can’t wait to flush the bush folk down the political drain . If McCain were 7 foot 3 it would’nt matter . The Democrats will have to perform a spectacular own goal to lose this one . And yes that is always possible . By March 5 the die should be well and truly cast .

  • Rory

It’s bad enough that Obama looms over McCain but it will look even worse if he has to confront Hillary Clinton who at an equal height of 5’7″ will, in high heels, also be seen to look down on him. Now that will surely shrivel his pecker (as a metaphor for dwindling campaigning confidence of course).

How nouveau socialist of you. I’ll see if we can get a few black helicopters to drop some tinfoil hats in your direction. I don’t need no steeking Fox news, I’ve got the truth on my side. Sadly I think with that butthead McCain out front I’ll be suffering, but at least I’ll have plenty of fodder for my cannon.

  • USA

Bush is just another word for cunt, and in this case it is very appropriate.
$9 trillion in debt, a war in Iraq he should never have started, lost all our friends and allies abroad. Lets face it, he is a complete fuck up. The end couldn’t come soon enough for me and it will take a long time to right the mess he has helped create.
A dumb ass mother fucker and this asshole is around 6’2.
I’d take a fuckin dwarf instead of Bush. Personally I would like to see Hilliary Clinton as President with Obama as Vice President. I would then like to see Obama also become President at the appropriate time.

  • Dewi

For my info – what is this tin foil hat insult all about?

    bye bye Bush

  • BfB

Can’t wait to see whatever socialist wanker gets to be POTUS. I’m sure they’ll follow Dem nanny Pelosi in making fundamental changes to get this country back on track. Fatchance. Those assholes will be blaming Bush instead of protecting this country.
I don’t use tinfoilhat as an insult. It is an appropriate analogy.
I won’t miss Bush. I will miss killing as many muslim murderers as we can, before they kill us.

  • BfB

    USA

Get off the fence…Do ya like Bush or not?

  • willis

    hmm

Reminds me of the joke Gerry Fitt told about Johnny McQuade. That McQuade would have been several inches taller if he had not landed on his head when he parachuted into Burma.

Not a problem Bush ever faced.

“It is my conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of murder.”

  • Rory

I can’t help wondering how many Muslims BfB has killed to date.

I suspect that little to none might be the answer and that we are just reading the frustrated howl of another impotent armchair warrior enraged by the horrendous plight his country is in but too frightened to face up to the truth of it’s cause.

Easier to allow young black men and unemployed white millworkers go off to kill and be killed than risk saying “Boo!” to a pampered oil-rich Texas red-neck.

    How brave.

  • BfB

‘Easier to allow young black men and unemployed white millworkers go off to kill and be killed than risk saying “Boo!” to a pampered oil-rich Texas red-neck.’

You’re a socialst, useful idiot. Parroting whatever liberal drivel sounds good to your sad moral compass. Your ilk brings this to mind.

“Every man thinks meanly of himself for not having been a soldier, or not having been at sea….were Socrates and Charles the Twelfth of Sweden both present in any company, and Socrates to say, ‘Follow me, and hear a lecture on philosophy;’ and Charles, laying his hand on his sword, to say, ‘Follow me, and dethrone the Czar;’ a man would be ashamed to follow Socrates.”

    “You’re a socialst, useful idiot.”

‘Follow me, and hear a lecture on philosophy;’ and Charles, laying his hand on his sword, to say, ‘Follow me, and dethrone the Czar;’ a man would be ashamed to follow Socrates.”

What, like Lenin and his crew did?

    Irony threat level: severe.

  • Greenflag

‘I will miss killing as many muslim murderers as we can, before they kill us.’

So you won’t mind missing killing/executing the 40,000 American murderers who committed 40,000 homicides in the USA last year?

A gobshite by the way is a lower form of retard in case you find yourself being referred to by that term – in your case btw an almost polite form of verbal commendation !

Have you stopped cheering for Mitt now that he’s endorsed McCain ? No matter . The Republicans have screwed up these past seven years sometning for you no doubt to celebrate on President’s Day :(!

  • Rory

Those who follow Socrates, BfB, would be ashamed to have allowed a Czar to arise in the first place and even more ashamed of those their fellow citizens who assisted a Bush into power.

Those who glory in killing are those least fit to be soldiers. But not being a soldier, whatever of your fantasy for killing, I doubt that you would understand that, BfB.

It is notable that your fantasy is for killing (presumably passive Muslims) and not for fighting those who might be armed and willing and well able to fight back. Now that would kinda prick your little balloon. Would it not?

  • Dread Cthulhu

Greenflag: “They can’t wait to flush the bush folk down the political drain . If McCain were 7 foot 3 it would’nt matter . The Democrats will have to perform a spectacular own goal to lose this one . ”

Not really — all it would take would be the primaries going down to the shank end and get ugly – a scenario well within the realm of probability and starting to edge toward the realm of probability. Throw in the recent miscounts in New York, the pressuring of super-delegates to abrogate their presumed role and the serious possibility of a brokered convention or ugly floor-fight and the possibilities of Democratic disaster begin to border on legion.

On the other hand, we have a media that calls McCain’s fairly benign comment that Obama will someday have to discuss specifics, as opposed to broad uplifting rhetoric, as an “attack.” Likewise, they have little problem going with Hillary’s full name, yet ignore Obama’s middle name of “Hussein.”

Guess we can figure out who the press will be voting for…

  • USA

Please don’t listen to BfB. He is a disgusting human being and not representative of America. This will be shown at the next election. Even his own right wing party can only put forth McCain, a lefty to many within the republican party.
Bush, Chaney et al lied to us as well as the world. They are dumb criminals and should be treated as such.

  • Greenflag

This election will be decided on the issues which as of now look as if they will be the Economy, Health Care ,

    a) the Economy
    b) Health Care reform
    c) An end to the Iraqi misadventure.

This election will be won by the American ‘poor’ a voting block of poor whites , unions , african americans and Hispanics who look as if at last they are getting off their knees and demanding what the free citizens of other developed nations consider as basic rights.

They will be opposed by the super rich and a few evangelical Christians with many of the latter staying at home rather than voting for ‘leftie’ Mc Cain .

McCain’s only chance of winning this one is if he came out and promised an end to the war , universal health care , and stricter financial regulations on the financial sector.

‘Likewise, they have little problem going with Hillary’s full name, yet ignore Obama’s middle name of “Hussein.”’

Good for Hillary . Isn’t she lucky her last name isn’t Bush .

‘yet ignore Obama’s middle name of “Hussein.” ‘

Good for Obama – I suppose it could be worse Nixon -Cheney- Rumsfeld for instance .

I still expect Clinton to edge the nomination and would hope that Obama becomes VP nominee. Thats a ticket which will maximize the Democratic vote . McCain will have to rely on a minority of warmongers and luke warm evangelical christians .

As I said a few months back the USA is going through a paradigm shift in political attitudes and a shifting of demographic balance against Republicans . It began in 2000 when Bush lost the popular vote but took the Presidency due to the Electoral college vote. In 2004 Bush won on the basis of fear his ‘mission accomplished’theme ?

In 2008 the mission is not accomplished – the economy is in a mess , health care is a disaster, the national debt is at an all time high and trillions have been poured down the drain in a hare brained foreign adventure which was poorly thought out and even more poorly executed .

  • Greenflag

‘Please don’t listen to BfB. He is a disgusting human being and not representative of America’

Can’t say about ‘disgusting’ as i don’t know the gobshite 🙂 But I’ll agree with the rest of your comment.

‘Bush, Chaney et al lied to us as well as the world.’

I think everbody knows that by now . What people are still uncertain about is the extent to which the lies were deliberate or based on genuine ignorance . Either way it does not matter now to the hundreds of thousands dead including the 4,000 young Americans who died for a lie 🙁

  • Dread Cthulhu

Greenflag: “I still expect Clinton to edge the nomination and would hope that Obama becomes VP nominee. Thats a ticket which will maximize the Democratic vote . ”

Boot-strap levitation, Greenflag. First of all, the Democratic campaign is going to get uglier the closer they get to the convention. The narrower things get, the uglier its going to get. Obama has little to gain by throwing in with Hillary and, mayhap, a bit more to lose. This likely will get sufficiently ugly that kissing and making up will be difficult at best. A great many Obama voters have an “our guy or nobody” attitude and, assuming your scenario plays out, Hillary is not going to inspire them.

Greenflag: “In 2008 the mission is not accomplished – the economy is in a mess , health care is a disaster, the national debt is at an all time high and trillions have been poured down the drain in a hare brained foreign adventure which was poorly thought out and even more poorly executed.”

Never said it was a sure thing either way — but McCain draws from the center better than Hillary, at least at the moment. If the navel-gazing is to be believed, he puts some of the Kerry states into play.

Ultimately, the election will turn on the issues important a year (or more) from now and how those remaining “undecided” voters who, despite a three year campaign, will complain that there just wasn’t enough information in the last debate for them to make up their minds.

If Hillary is the nominee, McCain will have an easier time. I’d put money on McCain, given decent odds. Obama / McCain would be a harder pick, especially with the time left to go.

  • Greenflag

Given the issues this year no matter what happens at the Democratic Convention the Democratic base will be out in droves to get rid of Bush and the Republicans . McCain’s time was in 2000. There is too much Bush baggage for any Republican candidate to make a case to the young people of America to the African Americans or to the Hispanics or what the middle -class /working poor etc .

I’d put money on McCain, given decent odds.

Paddy Power is offering 11/2 on McCain at this stage with Obama at 10/11 and Clinton at 5/2 .

  • Dewi

The Michigan / Florida fiasco is going to run and run.

  • Dread Cthulhu

Greenflag: “Given the issues this year no matter what happens at the Democratic Convention the Democratic base will be out in droves to get rid of Bush and the Republicans . ”

Depends on how ugly things get… and, if you hadn’t noticed, Bush isn’t running.

There have been several instances of more Dems going to the polls in the primaries and the Republicans winning the big dance. You may be right, but I wouldn’t put money on it just yet, unless I got good odds.

Greenflag: “There is too much Bush baggage for any Republican candidate to make a case to the young people of America to the African Americans or to the Hispanics or what the middle -class /working poor etc . ”

Again, the devil will be in the details, Greenflag. If Obama is not the nominee (still an open question), I can see a great many disillusioned young-uns staying home. I can see the middle class blanching when they see the bill for some of Obama’s programs. The black-brown alliance is not perfect and, frankly, neither of us know what the future holds. Too many things can go wrong for either candidate between now and then.

Dewi: “The Michigan / Florida fiasco is going to run and run. ”

Precisely. The uglier it gets, the more momentum will be lost. The recent allegations of fraud in New York, where 80+ precints erroneously reported *ZERO* votes for Obama. Throw in a nationally broadcast pit-fight over the Michigan and Florida delegations and this has the potential to be truly ugly.

  • Greenflag

‘and, if you hadn’t noticed, Bush isn’t running.’

Yes he is . He’s just changed his name to McCain as far as most of the voters will be concerned .
Yes its a long time to November . Bush will have to do more than fart around the world looking to leave a ‘legacy’ although at this stage the less he’s in the USA probably the better for the Republican nominee.

‘I can see the middle class blanching when they see the bill for some of Obama’s programs.’

I’d say the American middle class have been blanched out more than enough already during the ruinous Bush presidency. The property market meltdown won’t help neither will increasing inflation and unemployment coming up to the election. If the USA was France and it were 1789 they’d already be dragging out the Bush/Cheney plutocracy out to the guillotine!
