Tories to save the NIO

It has never really occurred to me that anyone outside the NIO would think the NIO would exist after devolution to Northern Ireland has bedded down. With the Welsh and Scottish Offices doing a minimal amount, surely their Northern Irish counterpart would join them in a single Whitehall department. Owen Patterson seems to think that it is important that Northern Ireland have a dedicated department, although doesn’t seem to fully justify the claim in this report of the interview.

  • knowitall

The NIO is certainly cutting back on their staff, by over a thousand staff in fact in line with the Gershon efficiency review.

Presumably when/if (mustn’t be too optimistic) policing and justice powers are devolved to the NI Assembly the NIO will shrink to the size of its Scottish and Welsh counterparts.

Btw did you know that the NIO building in London doesn’t not fly its own flag, just the union flag? Whereas the Welsh and Scottish Offices fly their own flags in addition to the union flag.

  • what armed conflict

The NIO office building in London is part of the MI5 HQ.Thames House, 11 Millbank, London.

Knowitall, of course, should know that this probably has a lot to do with how NI, unlike Wales and Scotland, does not presently have a flag of its own, at least in legal/government terms.

Would that be the 6 county flag….

what next….they don`t spake Ulster Scots!

    Who really cares??????????

  • (J)

    “Who really cares?????????”

Is that about the NIO or just about Michael in general?

  • DC

    About the flag.

Being in the UUP after losing to Paisley is itself enough punishment for anyone, so Michael has my sympathies.

  • Buggerhed

    ‘“Who really cares?????????”

Is that about the NIO or just about Michael in general?

Well the latter would just be a stupid question, wouldn’t it?

  • DC

It’s not Michael’s fault that the UUP have been out done and indeed done out by the DUP.

BTW Michael you would make a good Tory, as they are all beginning to talk about getting the axe out to prolonged benefits to those prostrate people who should be up and out of bed doing a bit.

  • zoid

NIO shared digs with MI5? That’s vaguely creepy!

  • what armed conflict @ 09:38 PM:

Definitely not on topic, but might we also agree that Thames House is a rather fine building?

Frank Baines did a lot of good work (mainly in preservation and restoration). The two sides of Horseferry Road show he could turn out a decent newbuild.

So why, later, did the quality of public building deteriorate?
