Government inside the Government…

Reg Empey on the inner workings of the Executive, posited more evidence of the ‘ruling cabal’ inside the Executive:

“Not always, but more often than not, the DUP and Sinn Fein go into Ian Paisley’s office before Executive meetings to discuss their agreed approach to the agenda and leave myself, Michael (McGimpsey) and Margaret (Ritchie) sitting waiting. On one occasion it was as long as half-an-hour. Any other coalition in the world would break down in such circumstances.”

He wants a meeting between all party leaders on the matter, which interestingly would imply the involvement of two who currently operate outside the aegis of the Executive: Mark Durkan and Gerry Adams…

“Any other coalition in the world would break down in such circumstances.”

Aye, right enough Reg, but this is Northern Ireland, the land of compulsory coalition.

The UUP had a FM who would’nt let Seamus Mallon use the phone in his office. The Shinners and the DUPes know the name of the game.

    Hang together or hang separately.

Mick have I done some thing out of order. Why did my postings disappear.

  • Diluted Orange

    Aw diddums Reg!

If he’s so annoyed then maybe the UUP and the SDLP should go into opposition like they should have done, if they had any sort of integrity, in the first place.

”Any other coalition in the world would break down in such circumstances.”

Any other governing coalition in the world wouldn’t be compromised partly of parties that came 3rd and 4th in the relevant elections. I have no love for the DUP or SF but they came 1st and 2nd in the elections; as such it is only right that they discuss executive decisions amongst themselves – they unlike Sir Reg have the mandate to do so.

Seems like Reg Empey believes that there is a government within a government.

I realise this is a remote possibility, butif this is so, could there be a state within a state.

    A USDR,
    United. Shinners. Dupes. Reublic

Well the republic bit may not go down to well.

More like a farce within a farce, to misquote Gerry Kelly.

    ctb,

They were leading us all merrily down the ad homimen route… sorry, but… life is just too short…

Purly a question here, I am not trying to stir this up but seeking information on something which I do not know about.

Were these rows between various members of the executive a feature of the Sunningdale power sharing executive?

  • joeCanuck

That’s a fair enough comment, Diluted Orange, but to do it while keeping others waiting is just sheer rudeness, something we would all do well to avoid.

  • joeCanuck

Were these rows between various members of the executive a feature of the Sunningdale power sharing executive?

No Turgon. They did their best to keep a united face, at least in public. That’s my recollection anyway.

  • Comrade Stalin

Executives and cabinets are supposed to keep their rows internal. This situation is new because the rows are becoming external for largely political reasons.

The answer for Reg is simple. Stop wasting time and pull out of the executive.

  • Belfast Gonzo

Y’know, I don’t think reg or Durkan will leave the Executive at all. The UUP won’t go it alone, and the Stoops will hang on to see what transpires with Fianna Fail in the next Euro election…

  • While I wouldn’t blame the UUP or SDLP for pulling out, I don’t see them doing so either, potentially leaving themselves open to accusations of shirking their responsibilities by a DUP/SF coalition keen to shift attention away from the fact that it is just that.

    Mick

I was a wee bit concerned that there may be an orchestrated plan developing to stop me singing.

But Im glad thats not the case and I can push those fears aside, while I gargle my throat and get ready for the next set of lyrics LOL.
