ATN puts photos online…

The Belfast Media group has been doing some investing in its online offering. In an Irish market which is only tentatively moving forward in this area, there’s a couple of things worth noting. First, the PDFs for the whole week are available on the front page, and they’re using a more user friendly format called Page Suite than the usual acrobat reader. And also at the url they are selling on copies of pictures from their publications since 1998. Interesting, particularly if they can begin to drive (and expand it) as a small but separate business.

Is this related to Belfast Telegraph TV, which I came across by accident but think is very innovative?

No. Belfast Media Group is the organisation to which the Andersonstown News, North Belfast News, South Belfast News and Lá Nua belong.

The pix service is quite good but i think the pdf viewer is excellent. Lá Nua do it 5 days a week!

A few newspapers now have tv film elements – the Irish News and the Irish Times also have the service.

You’re right about Pagesuite being a big upgrade on pdfs, although its still nowhere near as nice to read on a screen as in print.

The Community Telegraph have been using Pagesuite for several months now and actually publish the paper online a couple of days before it comes out in print.

I really like Page Suite – it’s high time the irish News online starting using it. Their PDF service is terrible and you have to download each individual page to read it with no navigational help. Plus there is no facility to download the entire paper in one go.

    Rant over. Well done BMG.
