On the (un)importance of dress?

Big Ulsterman asks why on earth does it matter whether MLAs wear suit jackets and ties at Stormont… But his nomination towards the end would seem to have been overtaken by events..

Apparently it’s a hangover from the Alderdice era, along with voting by walking through a little tunnel and saying hello to the nice man at the end. Attempts to create a little House of Commons replica on Stormont hill.

I know some of the MLAs think it’s as ridiculous as anybody.

I might be conservative on this one folks, but N.Ireland isn’t that hot, and I suppose jackets are seen as indicating some level of respect so just leave them on. Representatives in the Dail, SP and Westminster all wear jackets so why not hear? Not exactly stone splittingly hot lets be honest, and the jackets hide the large bellies and awful shirts dotted around our (quickly becoming pathetic) Assembly.

  • Mick Fealty

Interesting point about the division voting. Some Westminster MPs like it, because it often gives them a chance to nobble Ministers that might not otherwise have. Electronics is fast, but dull to watch.

Not as good as Star Trek Mick?

  • Belfast Gonzo

I suspect that most people couldn’t give a toss about the ‘optics’ – whether in terms of jacket-wearing or going through a lobby – and just want to know the outcome.

Mind you, it might turn me if I flicked over to Stormont Live and saw Caitriona in her PJs.

  • snakebrain

PJs acceptable in Stormont but not Short Strand?

But think about it Gonzo; Equality reigns supreme so we’d also have to see Robbo and IPJ in theirs.

I predict a tasteful pistachio green for IPJ, and tatty old tartan for Robbo.

  • snakebrain

Forget the pistchio green for IPJ – what was I thinking? Royal Blue, obviously

  • Turgon

Suit jackets are very handy for holding stuff though, the alternative maybe handbags could be problematic for some.

Oh good, something interesting at Stormont. Can we nominate worst dressed-MLA? For me, it has to be Jeffrey. And at ministerial level P Robinson.
