Newt did not need any help ridiculing last week’s news stories… , not least the apparent mass delusion of witnesses to a fatal crash in West Belfast… In amongst the humour, there is a serious question as to what happened to the new long promised abolition of 50% remission for sex offenders:
The 18-year-old man who admitted raping a 15-year-old girl in west Belfast will serve only half his sentence because the NIO still hasn’t abolished 50% remission for sex offenders five months after criminal justice minister David Hanson announced it.
Last month the NIO managed to rush through new legislation on devolution in under 48 hours, after insisting for a year that any change was beyond all powers of governance.
Nor is this a matter being left to the assembly, because criminal justice has not yet been devolved. So why the hold-up?
