Ireland’s World Cup adventure in final stage

With South Africa’s demolition of England’s hopes of sneaking into the semi-finals yesterday the rest of the Super8 World Cup games will not affect the list of teams for the semi-finals. That said, Ireland’s final game, against Sri Lanka today, has the potential to cause a further sharp intake of breath.. however unlikely, a win today, against one of the confirmed semi-finalists, would lift Ireland further up the table. ANYhoo.. 2.30pm start, usual usual, OverByOver.. scorecard.. live commentary. Sri Lanka win toss and will field first. Ireland all out for 77 from 27.4 overs. That’s a very disappointing batting performance, even if it was against one of the likely finalists. 6th lowest World Cup total ever. Not the sort of performance to end this World Cup adventure, and coach Adrian Birrell’s tenure, that Ireland wanted to produce. Chasing 78 runs. Sri Lanka 81-2 from 10 overs. Sri Lanka win. Just too strong for Ireland at this point. Disappointing ending, but there are plenty of positives to take away from this tournament for the Irish side. Not least acheiving their first placing in the official ICC One-Day rankings and a place in the ICC’s ODI Championship Adds Comments from Trent Johnston
