What’s your choice?

Apparently there is a DUP van touring West Belfast blaring out Flute Band music in an attempt to get the vote out for Diane Dodds. It’s counterpart in North has chosen Amarillo, by Tony Christie.. Sha la la lala lalala… {encode=”mick.fealty@gmail.com” title=”Let us know”} what’s happening in your neck of the woods?

TONY CHRISTIE lyrics
  • voter

Black taxis in the west blaring Adams using his best Votail voice before blasting Something Inside So Strong. Very low key though and the air with the SF people outside the polling station was also low key and dare I say dejected? No banter or craic or even a sense of excitement at the big day you would think today was. 3 people came in with invalid ID when I was voting. Neighbours I met on the way said they weren’t voting. Funny thing was their spirits seemed to be higher than the fellas at the polling gates.

  • Gonzo

Voted at lunchtime, just off the Ormeau Road. There were more beggars than voters.

  • MICKYBRADY

just seen a white police landrover drive through derrybeg estate newry with sinn fein posters on the sides of it, hey micky your so fine was blaring out of it,what ever next

  • Yokel

    Yeah flute band music.

See this is poor from the DUP, blanket muzak. They need to vary it.

A selection from the war wiv some Elvis chucked in for those in their 50’s 60 and over. Though for Diane, ‘She loves you yeah yeah yeah’ might be good.

To get the younguns out its no so much de de de
as dum dumn dum dum bass lines of a different kind……onnlllllllly love can set you freeeeeeee

Thsoe aged in between can just live with it….

  • Greenflag

    Gonzo ,

‘There were more beggars than voters. ‘

You might think that Gonzo but there are those who could from a purely economic aspect as regards the finances of the NI political entity, not necessarily rule out your two above groups as mutually exclusive . Indeed some might say that all voters in an ‘indirect way’ in NI are ‘beggars’ of a sort. Which is possibly why 40% or so prefer to stay at home rather than publicly display their abject condition!

But hey let me not be a party pooper . This is the day when the exception proves the rule and ‘beggars ‘ get to be choosers 🙂

Paisley’s ‘election’ BTW will not make a blind bit of political difference except to confirm in the eyes of the outside world that NI has elected a clerical fundamentalist as it’s first Minister .

Outside of the island of Hispaniola where the Haitians elected the RC priest Rev Aristide as their leader I can’t think of any democracy in the western hemisphere which has elected a Cleric as it’s Prime Minister/President/ First Minister .

In Zimbabwe a certain Rev Canaan ‘Sodomy’ Banana (methodist minister IIRC) held the position of President for the years 1980 to 1987 but unlike Paisley was not elected by popular vote !

As they elect Paisley as First Minister – Northern Ireland will now be eleigible to join the Cleric’s Club, that exclusive group of political entities including such well known democracies such as Zimbabwe , Haiti , Afghanistan and Iran, which States as we all know are all shining examples of peace , tolerance and economic progress 🙁

  • Which is possibly why 40% or so prefer to stay at home rather than publicly display their abject condition!

So why to 40% or so of the Republic’s registered voters stay at home? Daft point.

  • Sean Fear

Was Aristide still a priest when we was elected?

  • Ca Va

At Belvoir School (SouthBt.) Hoey,s father told us that the original candidate for St Bt UKUP had backed out at short notice and Hoey was rushed in. Voting here A.M. was mostly Seniors but a steady flow

  • Greenflag

    Sean Fear,

‘Was Aristide still a priest when we was elected? ‘

I don’t know . But Paisley will still be a serving Minister if he’s FM .

  • Greenflag

‘So why to 40% or so of the Republic’s registered voters stay at home? ‘

Probably not a good idea to compare Oranges and Apples.

The electoral choice in the Republic will be a straight choice between Bertie Ahern as next Taoiseach and Bertie Ahern as next Taoiseach 🙂

BTW thanks for all the constituency reports .Great detail and I guess we’ll know tomorrow the actual electoral accuracy of same ?

  • Probably not a good idea to compare Oranges and Apples.

The facts don’t support the point you were trying to make. Turnout in the Republic has been collapsing in recent years.

BTW thanks for all the constituency reports .Great detail and I guess we’ll know tomorrow the actual electoral accuracy of same ?

Yes, my head is well and truly on the block! :-~

  • Bill

Let us remember that Paisley is not a real Reverend, just as he is not a real Doctor. His Doctorate was from an institution that could not award them. Not even the honorary one he has.

  • Yokel

Some would suggest he isn’t even a real politician….

  • Greenflag

    SM .

‘The facts don’t support the point you were trying to make.’

Did I say they did ? My actual statement was

‘Which is possibly why 40% or so prefer to stay at home ‘

Note the word ‘possibly’:) Does not mean the same thing as ‘probably’

‘Turnout in the Republic has been collapsing in recent years.’

Undeniably true . Some of the reasons for the drop are similar to those in NI .I’d guess that the absolutely ‘pissed off with politics and a pox on all parties’ factor runs about three to one in favour of the non voters in NI as compared to non voters in ROI. The relative ‘downplaying’ of the constitutional issue may result in an even lower poll than usual today in NI also the harsh fact of life that despite 10 elections in 10 years people in NI have learnt that just because they think they are electing a Government does not mean that they will actually get one ! Even now Barney Eastwood is hedging his bets for this ‘latest truly final and definitively ultimate last chance really no question ‘ date for ‘devolution’ in NI !

    Pardon my skepticism .

  • Greenflag

‘Yes, my head is well and truly on the block! ‘ :-~

The double headed axe is being sharpened as I speak 🙂

  • Greenflag

    Bill ,

‘Let us remember that Paisley is not a real Reverend, just as he is not a real Doctor. His Doctorate was from an institution that could not award them. Not even the honorary one he has.

That may well be true and probably is . However let us not forget the power of myth over reality. One man tells a lie often enough and it becomes the ‘truth’ for thousands . Often because it sounds plausible , convenient and suits our own private prejudices/belief systems .

We ‘human beings’ are not always ‘rational’ in our decision making or in our political or economic choices . To err is after all human and even Paisley is not divine at least not yet 🙂

Rumour has it at the Pearly Gates Last Saloon that the day Paisley pitches up at the entrance the Lord God will be leaving his heavenly abode for political asylum in some other universe!

  • CS Parnell

    Bill,

I hate Paisley and I used to believe what you did, but actually he’s a doctor all right – in the true Calvinist sense (ie a learned man of the church). If you set up your own church and you can didctate the rules, of course you are a learned man of your church, because no other one gets a look in.

I’m looking forward to the Shinners putting “manners on him” – another bubble about to burst form the boys that brought you “not a bullet, not an ounce”.

  • At the risk of being a spoilsport, surely those candidates playing music like “Something inside so strong” in a public place could be sued for breach of copyright?

  • Disco Dave

In this little cul-de-sac we like to call home, everyone has been round playing music for us on their speakers cars…

Songs being played by SF include
“Will We be Lovers?” by Deacon Blue, “Gangster Trippin” by Fat Boy Slim and “I Just Died In Your Arms” by Cutting Crew.

Songs being played by SDLP include…
“Lean On Me” by Club Nouveau as well as “A Little Less Conversation” and “Suspicious Minds”, both by Elvis

Songs being played by UUP include “Baby Come Back” by Pat Banto, “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” by the Smiths and “Things That make You Go MMmmm” by C+C Music Factory.

Songs being played by DUP include…
“Love to Hate You” by Erasure, the “DR Who” theme by Orbital and “Gimme, Gimme, Gimme” by Abba.

Songs being played by Alliance include “I Who Have Nothing” by Shirley Bassey, the theme tune to Minder by Dennis Waterman “I Could Be So Good For You” and “Hey, What’s Wrong With You?” by Phats & Small.

Songs being played by the Greens include either “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong, “Left Outside Alone” by Anastatsia and “When Two Worlds Collide” by Inspiral Carpets

There were plenty of other songs being played but I’m not sure which party it was. Maybe it was an Indie? Songs like…

“Unforgettable” by Nat King Cole and “Unbelievable” by Craig David
“We Might As Well Be Strangers” by Keane and “We Can Work It Out” by the Beatles
“Complicated” by Avril Lavigne and “The Winner Takes It All” by Abba

Even the Presiding Officers have been getting in on the act, playing “From AM to PM” by Christina Milan.

Greenflag may recall that the democratically elected President Aristide of Haiti was overthrown in a CIA coup because of his commitment to democracy and the human rights of the poor. Not something likely to happen to Papa Doc from Ballymena. Interestingly it was admirers of the former Haitian dictator and mass murderer Papa Doc Duvalier who went on a blood orgy with full CIA backing in order to assist the coup.

  • Greenflag

‘Not something likely to happen to Papa Doc from Ballymena. ‘

Oh I don’t know . The CIA is just one among many organisations that Papa Doc has accused of being behind the world wide Romanist plot to undermine the Unionist position in NI. At some point somebody in the CIA might take him seriously!

On a ‘missionary’ trip to the Philipines many years ago Papa Doc was to the latter’s surprise consulted by President Marcos as to how best to defeat the ‘communists’ and ‘rebels’ in that country . To judge by President Marcos’s subsequent career it’s clear that Paisley’s advice was not heeded .

There is no truth to the rumour that Paisley advised the then dictator Marcos to share power with Corine Aquino 🙂

  • Comrade Stalin

    Bill :

Let us remember that Paisley is not a real Reverend

There is no such thing as a “fake” reverend; they are all “real”. The term “reverend” is simply a title bestowed on a person by a random self-selecting group of people. Sometimes that group of people is very large, but nonetheless, it is entirely arbitrary.

the queenie lizzy the kraut, is head of state and also head of heretic c of e. ( unelected). always made me laugh when paisleyite rabble called roi priest ridden state when their leader wore a dog collar and head of state was head of church. Head of state in uk . Where it is actually illegal for a catholic to be head of state. Not a moslem though. And 28 c of e bishops sit in parliament as of right. No evuivalent laws or rights in roi. 6 county prods really are the most incredible hypocrites.

  • jamestwo

Looked it up. Paisleys “doctorate” came from the Bob Jones University. (Carolina if I recall correctly.) What a joke. You couldnt make it up.

  • Plum Duff

Keep taking the tablets, James. Would that be James the Two of Purdysburn and James the Six of Muckamore, btw?

South Belfast, 16:40, some eejit in a small car blaring out a muffled message but going so fast the noise of his engine drowned out his pearls of wisdom. Immediately thought of Morecambe & Wise and the ambulance/ice cream vendor.

  • jeep55

Get back to the songs! Does anyone remember when Alliance’s theme song was ‘Oliver’s Army’ (Elvis Costello) after leader Oliver Napier? Westminster ’79 election when they got 12% of the vote and missed winning East Belfast by 900 odd votes. I’d probably settle for half of that tomorrow!

  • gerry

I voted at eleven thirty on the Falls road, a few shinners outside and even fewer voters inside, more staff than voters. At four o’clock a car came into my street and all the doors of it flew open and 4 men bailed out and hit the doors, including this one for to see if we had all voted. Some of us had but not all. Funnily enough I haven’t seen too many private hire cabs help out this time, I was over the University end of the city, certainly no rush that end, past the polling station on finaghy road north, and no cars or anything, save a few shinners outside. Activity looked good at St Kevins school at the bottom of the whiterock, the car park was full there, but further on down the falls road I didn’t see too much activity about. Its begun to rain now.
When I got in I heard the shinners had been here again for the one remaining vote that wasn’t cast, they left a card with a number on it incase transport was needed. Can’t say I’m all that impressed.

  • West Tyrone

Shinners trying something strange in West Tyrone – not bothering marking off the proper registers inside the polling stations but seemed to have home prepared sheets with them but apparently their workers weren’t even marking off everyone who came in.

Didnt seem to be the usual late rush either in going to get last minute voters out.

Cant quite work out whether its cockyness or apathy with them.

    IS SHE THAT CONFIDENT?

Haven’t seen Jim Wells once in SD. ‘Don’t know anyone who HAS seen him. Where did you go Jim? Did you bother leaving Craigavon? When elected where will your constituency offices be Jim?
