SOCCER UPDATE: Irish Strikers hit rich vein of form as Slugger’s Fantasy League hots up

The Slugger League is hotting up, with less than three points separating the top three teams with all of the top 14 teams above the 700 point tally at this stage. Tony Morgan leads the table with myself and the Clady Cowboy fronting the chasing pack. I’ve pasted the league table onto the bottom of this thread.

Whilst the international teams on this island appear to be experiencing contrasting fortunes, it would appear that Irish strikers have never had it so good. Both Robbie Keane and David Healy share the title of most international goals scored by an Irishman, whilst across the water, both the Premier League in England and SPL in Scotland have Irish strikers heading their goalscoring charts. Kevin Doyle, purchased from Cork City by Reading for less than £80,000, scored 18 goals in the First Division last season and is now leading the Premiership with 8 goals. In Scotland, teenager Anthony Stokes (on loan from Arsenal) has taken the league by storm, scoring back-to-back hat-tricks on his way to the top of the goalscoring chart for Falkirk. His tally of 13 goals in 13 games marks him out as a player Steve Staunton can ill afford to keep out of his team for long, even if he is competing for a place with captain Keane and current Premiership lead scorer, Doyle.

BTW Congrats are due to Derry City and Glentoran, who triumphed in their respective Cup Finals over the weekend.

With so much talent up front at their disposal, one wonders why the ROI see the need to poach the youth of Northern Ireland.

I´m in touch up there with the leaders and will have a good run in the second half of the season.

    Zzzz…

Another Corkman to keep an eye on is 19 year old Billy Clarke at Ipswich.

  • adrec

If he is from Cork I doubt FAI would be interested.

It never fails to amuse me when NI supporters come on this forum and basically tell Nationalists that if they don’t like the anthems and flags at windsor Park they can go lump it, but then have a strop every time a decent footballer from a Nationalist background opts to play for the Republic. As for the ‘poaching’ line – I suggest you acquaint yourself with the relevant FIFA guidelines.

“but then have a strop every time a decent footballer from a Nationalist background opts to play for the Republic.”

No player from NI has opted to play for the ROI. Recently some younger players who have already represented NI have been paoched by the FAI…players do not aproach associations.

If any player from NI came out and said I do not want to play for NI as I can´t feel I belong to a team that plays in a British jurisdiction, well then I will show them the upmost respect.

Now people like me who have never been hardened against the idea of an all ireland side are now gradually because of the antics of the FAI are vastly opposed to the idea.

The idea of an all Ireland premier league has now all but diminished because of the antics of the FAI.

Instead of you criticising a nation whose players represent all sections of the community in all six counties of Northern Ireland, you should be more concerned with the rip off prices the FAI are charging you for your next batch of 2008 qualifiers at Croke Park. And making you pay for them now just before Christmas.

    feliz navidad

“No player from NI has opted to play for the ROI. Recently some younger players who have already represented NI have been paoched by the FAI…players do not aproach associations.”

The usual nonsense from the good dr.

Unless you can provide any evidence that any player has been poached, please refrain from your tittle tattle.

Ireland draws its support from every part of this island so its natural that young players want to play for their country.

Clearly the FAI have realised that they cannot continue to refuse young players from the North from playing for their country.

The outdated unwritten rule of the two associations avoiding the issue regarding who plays for who, is gone.

For example, When former n.i player Jim Magilton visited his former school in West Belfast recently, he viewed the schools football team practicing their skills. A lot of the young lads were wearing their Ireland tops during the practice.

I understand that n.i supporters feel a bit p**sed off that players represent n.i at youth levels and then choose to represent Ireland as they get older, but until the FAI are able to nurture those who want to play for Ireland from schoolboy level within the North, the trend will continue.

A lot of the young players from Derry, for example have already decided to play for Ireland, if chosen, at youth international level, so its natural that other communities who support and follow Ireland will want to do the same.

O’Connor,Kane,Wilson, Deery, Gibson etc… are only following the natural path to the international stage.

“And making you pay for them now just before Christmas.”

Noone is being asked to pay for any seat before Christmas.

    Wrong again !!!

  • adrec

    tim

“Unless you can provide any evidence that any player has been poached, please refrain from your tittle tattle.”

The FAI have not tried to hide the fact Tim.

The very rule that FIFA changed to stop it being exploited by Brazillian born players being procurred by footballing authorities in Qatar is now being unashamedly exploited by FAI.

You refer to the team you follow as Ireland.

    Wrong again.

Ireland are represented by IFA, more commonly known as Northern Ireland these days. The FAI separtists are ROI or AKA 26 counties to their Northern supporters.

“until the FAI are able to nurture those who want to play for Ireland from schoolboy level within the North, the trend will continue.”

Just where does this arrogance end. Perhaps the IFA can build facilities for them as well. It´s not in the interests of FAI to nurture, when it´s done for them for free. No player is forced to play for Northern Ireland at any level, name one who has.

Your aspirations of Nationalists from all 32 counties playing for Roi has a horrible stench of apartheid about it.

You are motivated only by wishing to see the Northern state devalued in any way it can.

I can only talk for myself when I say that as a Northern Ireland fan the sense of pride i feel when I see players from all traditions from all the six counties from Northern Ireland is my motivation, I really don´t have the time for people who don´t wish to play for us.

So I would suggest that until you have evidence that these young players are not being tapped up I suggest you shut up and start saving for the most expensive tickets in Europe in 2007.

BTW as you can see, I am not Dr. Who I am Adrec, the Doctor is currently flying around time and space poaching players for NI.

  • Realist

“When former n.i player Jim Magilton visited his former school in West Belfast recently, he viewed the schools football team practicing their skills. A lot of the young lads were wearing their Ireland tops during the practice.”

When Jim was in Belfast recently for the recent Northern Ireland v Latvia game, he went to watch kids from his old club (SOPYC) play Linfield.

On enquiring about the very talented Linfield centre forward, he was shocked (and pleasantly surprised) to learn that the kid lives a couple of streets from where Jim grew up.

Time are moving on – some dinasaurs are stuck in a timewarp of hatred.

On theme, Doyle looks like bargin buy of the year. He looks a goodun to me. A real find for the FAI team.

Healy needs away from Leeds. Looks like he might be re-united with old mentor David Moyles at Everton come January.

irish strikers like Robbie Keane have never had it so good??
Hardeharharhar. He wasn’t enjoying Saturday morning’s spanking by the mighty Gooners

It took me weeks to work out how the fantasy footie worked, so you all got a head start…….

Now I’ve got a handle on it and I’m pushing towards getting into the top 50. Leaders beware!

  • austin

nice to see that Ziz/Owen’s scintillating football knowledge is reflected in his superb position of 74th out of 75.

    Keep it up Kid.

I wouldn’t criticise anyone on their scintillating football knowledge – who was it that got it wrong right here on Slugger about the last time Northern Ireland beat ROI?

  • Big P (The Buda Crocks Manager )

It took me weeks to work out how the fantasy footie worked, so you all got a head start

Same here and nobody informed me about how rock solid Reading’s defence was.

Also let my heart rule my head and included Roy Carroll, young Davis from Villa and Keith Gillespie (Keith Gillespie, Keith Gillespie…ad infinitum)in my squad. It’s all very well standing by your principles, but when I was hovering round 70th place I got so desperate I was even considering signing up a Scouser. Or someone from City (no,no, it never got quite that bad…)

But you know what, I’m glad I stuck with the Norn Iron boys (and with poor Roy now gone for a few weeks quiet contemplation and I’ve been able to slip yer man Robinson in with a clear conscience). Keith Gillespie, thirteen points yesterday and in the weekend’s Star team. Just got to sort out That Young Davis now and we’ll be flying in the Top 50…soonish.

  • George

My only goal is to get out of the relegation zone. and keep ahead of Mick and Owen.

A couple of good results and nmc, Niall and even Harpo could be dragged into the dogfight at the bottom.

    “SOCCER UPDATE”

“The game for all”, as Glentoran FC’s motto “Le jeu avant tout” translates, is FOOTBALL and not the Americanised word “soccer”, a pet hate of mine…

  • George

Soccer is actually English in origin Concerned Loyalist. The Americans got it off them.

  • Mustapha Mond

“The game for all”, as Glentoran FC’s motto “Le jeu avant tout”

That actually translates as “The game before all”.
“Le jeu pour tout” would be “the game for all” which it most definetly is.

41st place, not bad, I’ve since lost interest in it.
