Orde: I’m ready to talk Gerry…

Hugh Orde tells Gerry Adams that he is ready for face to face talks with Sinn Fein…

“My people have got to be able to talk to their people and at every level openly about all the issues that people are concerned about,” the PSNI chief told the Belfast Telegraph. Policing isn’t political. It is about people who need help.

“All I ask is that my people are given the opportunity to protect all communities. Don’t judge us by the past. Judge us by what we do now. That’s all I ask.”

Good. Orde has been asking for this meeting for some time.

“Judge us by what we do now. That’s all I ask”

Considering the rather dodgy performance of the PSNI that mightn’t be the wisest thing to ask for a judgement on.

  • Yokel

How do you think this will play with the rejectionist faction?

Probably not well…..maybe not the best thing for Gerry to extend the invite at this time.

    Inching along

Given the ever increasing entreaties by SF to the DUP that ‘We should talk’ and that nothing can be resolved without sitting around a table, it should be interesting to see how GA responds to this invitation from Hugh Orde. However, if both sides can agree that ‘Policing isn’t political’ (Orde) or ‘Take the politics out of policing’ (Adams) as each has stated, then there can’t be too many barriers left, can there?

    Did someone mention MI5?

  • Pathetic. Orde and his woeful PSNI are such a washed out inept version of the RUC, little wonder that he’s “ready to talk” to Sinn Fein/IRA.

First item on the agenda……the La Mon House atrocity, who might have been responsible in authorising it? Any thoughts Mr Adams?

  • J Kelly

DV did someone not tell you the B Specials the RUC and the UDR have all been disbanded with ignominy and no longer do the unionist community have their own armed militia. Hopefully someday we might get them tried for war crimes.

  • Someone who refers to the legitimate forces of law and order as “armed militia” is self-evidently so far removed from reality as to be beyond debate. Stick with the Securicrat imaginations, soothes the fevered brow.

Er, perhaps I’m just imagining it, but didn’t Adams and Orde first meet for talks like TWO YEARS AGO? And since then, haven’t we seen instances of de facto co-operation between police and republicans such as during contentious marches in north Belfast. (Remember Gerry Kelly’s broken arm?)

Yes, I wasn’t imagining it: here’s the link:

Clearly the issue of SF making the big gesture of “talking” to police is one that was dealt with two years ago? What the hell is this red herring all about? How short are our collective memories anyway?

  • Bemu s ed

Well done Billy – I was thinking the same thing myself.

Clearly the issue of SF making the big gesture of “talking” to police is one that was dealt with two years ago?

In fairness is the article in question not about Hugh making the big gesture of talking to SF, as opposed to the other way about?

Jesus nmc – with semantics like that you should be working in the NIO.

  • Glen Taisie

Many of the Sinn Fein leadership have been talking to the Security Forces (Intelligence Services) for along time.

P.S.East Derry Sinn Fein rep Billy Leonard is a former RUC/Orange man

My God, what a mind-bogglingly mendacious reply that is!!! What on earth is the difference? They’ve been talking to each other for the last two years – that’s the salient point.

So what is all this craic about whether SF are going to “talk to police”? What’s next – demanding that they take their seats at Stormont? IRA decommissioning? A statement that the war is over?

Jesus, some people just have such short attention spans!!!

  • Truth and Justice

The sooner Sinn Fein signs up for policing the sooner we can all move on1

  • Truth and Justice,

Can you share with us at what point you have concluded that the words of liars represent a solid basis to “move on”?

Since you appear to place huge import on IRA pledges, will you confirm now that when De Valera and Collins pledged their allegiance to the Crown in 1916, that made them Monarchists?

If you acknowledge republicans lied then, why do you think their words count for more now?

Where is the coherence in your view? Oh well, as you say elsewhere, you are of a UUP point of view, so that must explain the illogic.
