Blues pay peaceful visit to West Belfast

Linfield’s visit to Suffolk Road seemed to pass off peacefully in their first visit to West Belfast since they played Belfast Celtic on 2nd April 1949. The score was 1-0 to Linfield on that occasion too.

Wasn’t that the match that was abandoned when the Linfield fans ran on to the pitch and beat the daylights out of a Belfast Celtic player Jimmy Jones. The score at the time of abandonment, if I’m correct, was 1-1. But correct me if I’m wrong…..

  • Mick Fealty

No. You’re thinking of the pitch invasion at Windsor Park, Boxing Day 1948 in the dying seconds of the game when Billy Simpson scored a late equaliser for the Blues. Six Celtic players were attacked, Jones took the most serious injuries.

This was the game after that. The team played on to the end of the season, and then left the league for ever as it happened.

Not surprising that it was quiet, it was bollock freezing on Saturday…..

The great irony is that the vision of the man behind Belfast Celtic was a sectarian breaker, not a sectarian maker. It’s about time that it got back to that.

  • Carson’s Cat

It wont have been the first visit for the Linfield fans to West Belfast – most of them live there 😉

Both sets could have sang “Gerry Adams is your MP” at each other…… 😉

“Both sets could have sang “Gerry Adams is your MP” at each other…… ;-)”

    They did!

Hopefully the first of many visits by Linfield to Donegal Celtic.

Linfield Football Club will look forward to reciprocating the marvellous hospitality and friendship afforded to them by the DCFC officials, members and players on Saturday, when DC visit Windsor Park for the return fixture next February.

Also, good luck to DC with their ground development plans.

Local football can only but benefit from a strong and vibrant Celtic club back in the league.

The exact type of vomitous platitudes produced by the round and bald one. Makes you want to riot yourself.

“vomitous platitudes” – would you care to elaborate?

What on earth is wrong with Linfield returning the hospitality shown them by Belfast Celtic?

This strikes me as a for-real good news story.

  • dpef

It strikes me most of the media, football supporters, bloggers and people in general seem genuinely, pleasantly surprised that the DC, their supporters and the people of West Belfast did not engage in hostile or violent behaviour.

All we want is for our team to win, like the normal people we are and we don’t deserve the normal actions of our community being treated as some sort of surprisingly commendable behaviour.

  • inuit_goddess

well said dpef – now if linfield fans return the courtesy it really will be a good news story.

Because Linfield manager David Jeffries is a member of the orange order, does it mean that he would refuse to enter a Catholic church as they regard them as being ‘unclean’ ???

Is Grosvenor Park not considered to be in west Belfast??
