Nick Robinson, and playing the ball…

Yesterday Miss Fitz blogged here for the first time in ages. Then someone came on and told her that her blog was boring. And that was it. For myself, I don’t mind if people don’t like what we’ve written. If you can pull it apart bit by bit, all to the good. But if you are going to criticise (or even praise) something written on the blog, then please take a leaf out of Nick Robinson’s book/blog and kindly tell us why you feel the way you feel. Otherwise all we get is a series of smug one liners devoid of any discernable content. And that is really, really boring.

  • Doctor Who

Hold my hands up Mick..but what started quite innocently was blown out of all proportion by Miss Fitz, who I have been quite complimentary to in the past.

I am aware that Miss Fitz has been through alot and that her blogs reflect some of the more precious things in life which we quite often take for granted. She is in fact one of the better bloggers on this site.

Perhaps my point that I thought it was boring did not take into account that other posters would find it entertaining.

I would further add that I did not intend to start a rush of one liners,( we could accuse NR of the same) but I guess there a lot of bored people out there.

  • are we a country?

Another example of how you win friends and influence people, Dr. Stalker.

You’ve frightened off Miss Fitz and you have relentlessly stalked Anna Dale for a date

You sit on this site day in/day out all week trying to find easy (usually female) targets for your bullying.

You really are a cowardly geek of the highest order.

  • Doctor Who

    Mick

    You where saying.

If you check the above cretins IP address you will find he was probably the one responsible for the disgusting diatribe, which was beneath the bounds of the lowest of the low, aimed at myself on the Stan and Lawrie thread. Furthermore I will forward you a threatening e mail I also beleive to be from this particular low life.

Ironic he accuses me of stalking when he seems to partake in criminal activity as a passtime.

  • young newt

    Mick

please check the IP addresses and you will indeed see that I am not guilty as charged by the good and decent Doctor

    Thanks

  • Miss Fitz

Well, to be fair it went from bad to worse yesterday, and made me wonder why on earth anyone bothers trying to make contributions to sites such as this.

I’ve been driving around all day with one phrase stuck in my head, one of the later comments ‘Miss Fitz is crap’.

Sometimes the blog is quick and witty, other times I can spend up to 2 hours editing and revising as Pete would say.

I actually spoke to Mick before writing about something like a trip to Lourdes, and he was supportive of the idea of doing it. The piece may not have been to everyone’s taste, but it was meant to say a little about how we live our lives, make judgements on people and the value of stopping to smell the roses from time to time.

All I really can say is that when people take the time and care to write pieces for your entertainment, please take the care to consider that there is a human being at the other end of the computer.

Dr Who, I havent ‘been through a lot’ recently, I certainly lead an active and challenging life and have been travelling a good deal, but I stand by the piece I wrote. Furthermore, I stand by my attitude toward you and your comments.

A few weeks after becoming the sole female blogger on the site, I jokingly asked Mick what the last one died of, although I said I suspected it was harassment.

It’s a poor reflection on you all to have killed off two with the same treatment

  • maura

‘It’s a poor reflection on you all to have killed off two with the same treatment ‘

Well said Miss Fitz, it is truly a problem on Slugger. Most of ‘us’ just read and do ( in real life terms) rather than put up with the abuse meted out here.
    (Returning to my corner:-))

  • Nevin

Miss Fitz, please ignore the b’stards. Keep on blogging in your own style. Variety is the spice of life and we all need a little spice sometime.

  • Jeremy

I must say I have generally enjoyed Miss Fitz’s postings. Bit of charachter to them. Keep up the good work and forget the begrudgers

  • dalek

    Miss fitz

I actually defended you very early on in the dog ate my.. thread. I could see where it was going and that there was going to be further mysogyny from DW.

Hang in there as it is nice to get a female perspective and as stated above there isnt anybody else and there is not enough as it is. I for one enjoy your slightly off beat contributions and the fact that you speak from the heart. Keep it up and hopefully DW will wing off to another galaxy and perhaps several hundred years in the past where he may feel more comfortable.

  • Aislingeach

Glad to see you back, Miss Fitz, even if I didn’t get the chance to read your bit on Lourdes and Daniel until today. One of the reasons I read Slugger is that it provides a variety of views and there is an attempt to limit the slagging.
However–there is an old story of a man whose horse fell into a hole. He couldn’t get it out, so decided to just bury the poor beast. But every time he shoveled dirt down on it, the horse shook his back and stepped onto the dirt that fell off his back. Eventually the horse was able to walk out of the now-shallow hole.
So Miss Fitz, shake it off, step up and go on your way.

  • Doctor Who

Miss Fitz, glad to see your back. I do however think that my comment however “juvenile” it was has been taken completely out of context.

Now I am being accused of mysogony??(spelling) can I have examples.

Miss Fitz I never said you´d been a through alot “recently”, I am aware that a lot of situations have happened in your life from previous blogs and perhaps these are what make your blogs generally interesting.

I sincerely hope we can now put this behind us and I look forward to posting on your future blogs on a level playing field.

  • Rory

I have thought about this matter of offence given, offence taken, offence intended, inadvertent offence and all the permutations and how possib;y it might be policed and I can come up with no answer that might satisfy all.

Therefore I can only speak for myself and say this:

If any contributor should utter remarks that are personally insulting to me, then I shall be obliged, as a lapsed atheist, to launch my own version of a fatwah against them. So there!

  • Animus

Kiss and make up, you two.

I do think women get rough treatment in the blogosphere and I think bloggers assume that other bloggers are like them until proven otherwise.

I chose a handle that could should indicate my gender but no one has ever noticed or commented. But it is odd how quickly people can fall into stereotyping other commenters on blogs. That’s certainly not just about gender either – you see it with regard to nationality and political opinion as well.

  • Gonzo

At least some people actually welcomed Miss Fitz back after her break…

    *har-umph*

  • Hi Miss Fitz

You are one the best bloggers on Slugger, please ignore the Trolls and carrying on blogging.

  • Mick Fealty

One observation, not on the current situation but it might help.

Everytime I do something in Irish, after a long break, someone makes the same crap joke, supposedly at my/the language’s expense. After pressing on for a bit, it invariably heels back on itself and human discourse ensues.

We could certainly do with more women bloggers, but for now I think you could say (ref Gonzo), you are a damned sight more appreciated than most of us males!

  • páid

Sydney Airport is a bit of a drag in August, particularly as most people trying to get thru immigration, have had a very long flight. Imagine my surprise, as my English teacher would have prompted, when DOD joined the queue.
Imagine my further surprise indeed when a group of Aussie dickheads tried to bundle sweet Daniel out of the way in a vain attempt to cheat the queue.

And how did the King of Kincasslagh react?

A wistful smile and a shrug of the shoulders.

    So proud.

  • páid

And IMHO, Dr Who has been imperfect (who hasn’t?), apologised and let’s move on.

    Miss Fitz can take it!

  • Kilburn Kate

Maybe Miss Fitz is boring to many and her interests do not reflect those of most readers. Certainly, many non fanatics must find any of the long winded “best team in Ireland” threads torture at the very least.
The resistance using Irish gets is probably a better litmus test of intolerance, as is trying to see light in the other’s side of the argument/fence.
MissFitz’ posts don’t hold much attraction for me so I skip them. It is, alas and alack, much harder to skip the wall to wall posting on Stan, Sanchez and their charges.

  • McGrath

I like your wistful posts Miss F; there is an essential and natural insight to all of it.

  • She’s not boring at all. If you want a boring blog, read mine.

Welcome back Miss Fitz (and Gonzo).

  • POL

Not a Daniel fan myself Miss Fitz(however loved the pop Fr Ted had at him)but if someone can take time out to make others happy then fair play.

About the criticism of your blog. I feel you`re correct you can take it or leave it simply by click or not click.Personally i found it amusing and light hearted and a nice diversion from the thrust and counter thrust of the usual political joisting.

  • JR

Dr. Who doesn’t kile it up him!!

  • Rory

If we look at Doctor Who’s initial yawning response we find it was posted at 02.30am. Explains a lot really. The poor fellow was simply lonely and wanted to be noticed. Now he has and is trying to be nice. Ahh, bless!.

  • I Wonder

As a former female blogger who was appalled by the mysogyny, cyberstalking and the lack of protection or udnerstanding offered to females, I think the entire medium takes itself far too seriously and has done very little (Miss Fitz being an honourable exception) to shake off the sterotypical image that bloggers have no lives.

Most of them don’t. I do, now. 🙂

  • lib2016

I’d just like to welcome Miss Fitz back and hope she stays, and also to thank her and all the other bloggers and ordinary posters on the site for making it what it is.

Special thanks of course for Mick, with my apologies for not being in a position to help financially!

  • Doctor Who

I have offered an apology to Miss Fitz..My initial post was blown out of all proportion.

Miss Fitz implies I said she was crap.

A look at the thread will confirm I said no such thing.

As for being anti women, well someone should tell my wife, who is currently on a three week holiday in India….giving me more internet time.

Now I think enough molly cuddling of Miss Fitz has taken place, I am sure she is big enough to look after herself.

  • Animus

I don’t want to stir things up too much, but being pro- your wife doesn’t mean that you are pro-woman generally! I daresay many of the obnoxious posters adore women (or would like to if the restraining order was removed) in the main, but perhaps do not appreciate them as bloggers or commenters, ie know your place, woman. I’m certainly not saying you are misogynist Dr Who, just observing that your statement is not a far cry from the old chestnut “But some of my best friends are [insert ‘minority’ group here].” I am sure that is not your intention at all. The discussion moved from your inital post on the other thread to a general antipathy towards female posters but I don’t think you were being implicated.

  • Doctor Who

    Aniumus

If you read over some of the posts, yes I am being told I am a misogynist…I don´t understand why as there is nothing I said in the original post to warrant it.

I wasn´t trying to make out I am a “new age man”, just want people like JR and co to justify there comments in the same way they demanded I did.

I guess I´m just a narrow minde think male.

  • If I were to catalogue, at length, instances where, to my subjective satisfaction, ‘Miss Fitz’ *was* . . . over-touchy, hyper-sensitive, prone to egotistically widening out personal criticism of her into speciously general gender critiques, whiny, boring, po-faced, and quite capable herself of slagging off other folk, what exactly would it prove? She posts under a nom de plume. No one knows who she is. What does it matter if, from time to time, some yahoos say things which hurt her feelings? The public square is the public square. Enter it, and expect to be treated the same way everyone else is. *Don’t* expect to be able to pull a ‘Little Britain’-style, “but I’m a lady”, when someone says something you don’t like/says something in a manner you disapprove of. Old style courtesy to wimmin is dead. Feminists killed it. More’s the pity.

  • dalek

    There may be trouble ahead………

  • Speaking of female bloggers, and shoddy treatment etc. whatever happened to the joblog?

  • Dread Cthulhu

FTE,LTR: “If I were to catalogue, at length, instances where, to my subjective satisfaction, ‘Miss Fitz’ *was* . . . over-touchy, hyper-sensitive, prone to egotistically widening out personal criticism of her into speciously general gender critiques, whiny, boring, po-faced, and quite capable herself of slagging off other folk, what exactly would it prove? Ah, but when the public square, for whatever reason, decides its time to tar and feather the churl what has been offensive, should not the same rules apply — butch up, its a tough old world?

If it meet and just for Dr. Who to be churlish, how is it wrong that, when held up to the light, Dr. Who is remonstrated for said churlishness?

  • Animus

“Old style courtesy to wimmin is dead. Feminists killed it. More’s the pity.”

Wrong. Dr Who was rash in saying Miss Fitz was boring, it had nothing to do with her sex. (But enough already on that) Courtesy is for all bloggers, not just the ‘ladies.’ I would love to hear a cogent argument for how feminists killed courtesy – any takers? And remember: I said COGENT, not RANTING.

  • maura

I have been reluctant to emphatically state that there is a ‘bit of an attitude’ toward the women here- due to the ‘infamous’ female blogger who excused the universal distaste for herself by claiming it was an anti-woman mob opposed to her ( despite that fact that the women were as much, if not more, turned off by her behaviour). I can hold my own, can give as good as I get, and often find this ‘ you only treated me that way because I am female’ response to be cowardly and counter productive.
However, I have quietly understood that a certain attitude does exist, hard not to when ‘your stupid ****’ ‘fenian slapper’ emails make their way to you, because of blogs put on this board.
Nevertheless, I agree, it is part of the risk we take, all of us, by partaking in debate on such contentious issues. I can take the hard hitting responses, but when the name calling starts, well, then the place just becomes the schoolyard and is not worth my efforts. School yard bullies were never my thing. Abusive emails? well I suppose it is ‘Christian’ to say that anyone who resorts to such a thing is more deserving of my prayers and sympathy, than my anger.
    So is life.
As to Miss Fitz, I find most of her blogs very interesting, maybe sometimes it takes a female perspective to appreciate some of her work, I am not sure of that. I am not around here often enough to know if any of the males have been outright told your blogs are boring/pointless, so I can’t make that measure.
But keep up the good work Miss Fitz.

  • Dread Cthulhu

Animus: “I would love to hear a cogent argument for how feminists killed courtesy – any takers? And remember: I said COGENT, not RANTING. ”

Only anecdotally — dirty looks for holding a door, a snide remark here and there… As with all movements, it is the outliers who get the most press and stay in your mind the longest.

There is a hypocrisy within feminism — feminists which to have the same perceived priviledges as the members of the “patriarchy,” but seldom which to live up to the same requirements. For example, firemen (or should I say “firepersons?”) are required to be able to life 150 lbs. on their shoulder and carry it a certain distance within a set time. Under the revised standards, women have something like twice as long and are allowed to move the weight in three trips. All this sort of accomdation inspires in me is a desire to make sure I never have to have a “fireperson” try to carry me out of the house.

  • SlugFest

    Dread,

I’m with you for the most part — especially about changing physical requirements for a job of such importance as a fire fighter (that’s what i usualy call them).

i also agree that there’s hypocrisy in feminism, but only because i believe there’s hypocrisy in any movement and/or strong belief (republicans in armani suits?? och!)

but i can’t help but play devil’s advocate on your point about opening doors for women and getting dirty looks: how exactly do you know the dirty-looker was a feminist? perhaps she was instead a barbie, and gave you a dirty look because you ONLY held the door open for her (and you didn’t throw down your leather coat over that puddle for her). perhaps she was just having a bad day. or perhaps, dare i say it, you expected her to bat her long eyelashes at you in undying appreciation for such a simple gesture and when she didn’t you transferred your pre-existing prejudices upon her?

    just a thought.

  • Dread Cthulhu

Slugfest: “but i can’t help but play devil’s advocate on your point about opening doors for women and getting dirty looks: how exactly do you know the dirty-looker was a feminist? perhaps she was instead a barbie, and gave you a dirty look because you ONLY held the door open for her (and you didn’t throw down your leather coat over that puddle for her). perhaps she was just having a bad day. or perhaps, dare i say it, you expected her to bat her long eyelashes at you in undying appreciation for such a simple gesture and when she didn’t you transferred your pre-existing prejudices upon her? ”

Difficult, since I’m not really talking about a specific event, per se. Just the feeling — remembering that which has gone before.

As for expectations, the courtesy of a simple
“thank you” is the most I would expect — there is no “reward” for good manners, nor any expectation thereof. Wild expectations based on holding a door? Don’t be daft. It might be a thought, but its not much of one.

    FTP/LTR

Can I say that I think your post is both unfair and a little snide. I don’t necessarily wait with baited breath to see what MISSFITZ has written of an evening. BUT….the percentage of posters on here that are male far outweigh those that are female which is a bad thing. She clearly writes from a different perspective to the male contributors and has a discernible sense of humour.

I do agree with your point that if you climb on to your soap box there are going to be those who disagree with you and that this should not be unexpected.Such is life.

As far as her nom de plume and your assertion that no-one on here knows who she is is downright risible. She has been fairly open about details of her life on various threads and has not made any great effort to disguise herself. I worked out who she was early on and im sure she is in email contact with many of the contributors on here who will also know who she is. believe it or not her nom de plume gives you a little clue!!!

To Conclude I also think you are barking up the wrong tree with the “Wimmin” comment.Surely courtesy can be extended to males and females and deep down it makes us all feel better when people are nice to us. And yes I do hold doors open for women and mostly get a thank you and i think that probably includes quite a few feminists too btw.

Most of what u have said is in the public domain as regards Nick Robinson. I don’t think he has ever purported to be anything other than a tory. my goodness… I’m away for a fortnight w/ my Belfast boy to Las Vegas and a road trip thru the desert Southwest and not only does Slugger go down, but when it is up I see Mizz Fitz taking a slagging from DH when she stood her ground against his snarky comments and others sticking up for her.

count me amongst the latter… I appreciate MF’s perspective here and have stuck up a personal correspondence… not many of the blokes posting here I’d want to do so with… a few… but not many!!!

intelligence and compassion are key for me and Miss Fitz has them in spades 🙂

very thoughtful of you Mick for timing the site going down whilst I was away on holiday… makes catching up on my reading ever so much easier!! 😉 😉

BTW I’m a feminist and if someone opens a door for me I say “thank you”… and if I’m at the door first I’ll hold it open for the person behind me, regardless of gender… it’s called being polite… something we all could use a little more of 🙂
