I doubt the much feted meeting next week between Ian Paisley and Sean Brady is a sign that the former is about to declare himself an apostate after all these years of fighting ‘the tyranny of the church of Rome’. But given both have some shared social concerns, it is an interesting leadership move from Paisley that might be more useful in terms of what it signals – an intent to ‘decommission’ residual, largely self destructive anti-Catholic sentiment amongst the harder end of his constituency – than for any practical outcomes it may herald. Nice background piece from John Manley in the Irish News.
