Get on the bus

From today, free travel thoughout the south*. This on the same day new taxi fares are introduced.* If you are a pensioner, a carer, a welfare recipient or have disabilities.

AFAIK, the only difference is that the qualifying people can now travel at peak times, which was previously for fee paying only.

Wonderful news 🙂 . Bertie’s on the vote winning trail again . Now how about free lunch on the trains ?

Oh I forget – there’s no such thing as a free lunch -or is there ? We’ll know come election day !

  • Cormac

T’would be nice if they could extend this to the North, and vice-versa.

Not sure about the ‘welfare recipient’ bit though. I hate to sound like a PD-voter, but shouldn’t we be encouraging them to work? How about free travel for the first three months (or whatever) that you’re on the dole, to facilitate trying to find a job. It’s not like there’s a shortage of work. Jaysus, listen to me… come a recession I’ll be the first to ditch my right(ish)-wing economics and adopt socialist principles….

You’re right, though, Greenflag – great election ploy!

  • Crataegus

Good to see the free travel provision extended for Pensioners and those with disability.

    Greenflag

Your probably right about the timing but still good news.

One of the issues in the North that needs some examination is the abuse of the provision of cars for disabled. It may have tightened up recently

‘You’re right, though, Greenflag – great election ploy!

There’ll be a steady drip now of good news until election day climaxing of course with Bertie’s Budget . When it comes to winning elections you don’t want your political orgasm 6 months before the great day but a succession of smaller ‘freebies’ coming up to the great day can help the FF/PD coalition go over the top so to speak 🙂

    Greenflag:

“There’ll be a steady drip now of good news until election day climaxing of course with Bertie’s Budget ….”

That’s if Bertie makes it that far…there is now a steady drip of demands that he explain his own form of ‘subsidy’ received in 1993 (from certain alleged friends of his)…and the nature/purpose of this payment…
If this leaked news of unexplained payments to Bertie is an example of the ‘succession of smaller ‘freebies’ coming up to the great day’, then keep them coming, I say. Anything to damage Bertie and better still McDowell, who has suddenly grown all shy and withdrawn media-wise (strange that). So much for the ‘ideology’ of the PDs…

It looks like soon all Irish pensioners, even those living in England, could be travelling for free on the island of Ireland.

“EUROPEAN Union officials have backed calls for the Irish government to provide free travel to all Irish pensioners living in Britain.

The surprise move came as the EU Commission rejected Irish Government plans to allow only emigrants drawing an Irish pension to be allowed free travel on public transport within the island of Ireland.

Instead officials ruled the concession must apply to all Irish elderly living abroad if it was to be allowed.”

    Crataegus,
this already is all-island. Hain and Dermot Ahern announced the introduction of an all Ireland Free Bus and Rail Travel Scheme for senior citizens in June. Due to come into effect in April 2007.

‘Anything to damage Bertie and better still McDowell,’

And that’s about all the slump coalition can scome up with .They can’t defeat FF?PD based on policies or results so now they’re heading the ‘personal ‘ route . A mark of desperation setting in . Won’t work number one and will probably backfire .

  • Crataegus

    George

    That is indeed good news

I think this All-Ireland free travel thing will finally win over Unionists (who are nearly all over 65 anyway) to cast off their shackles and discover the joys of a united Ireland.
