Brown to put past troubles behind….

From Gary Kent in Manchester

The big issue for most here in Manchester is whether there will be any blood on the carpet at this week’s conference. A common view is that the big bust up of a few weeks ago defused tensions as people peered over the precipice and drew back quickly. Another example of the law of unintended consequences perhaps. The speech by Gordon Brown at noon today will be examined in the most minute detail.

Brown has to demonstrate to the party and the public that he is more than just a prudent control freak but has the emotional intelligence to build a broad appeal. Judging by his \interview (sound file) with Jim Naughtie on this morning’s Today programme, the key theme will be trust and experience.

The long (charm) offensive is just starting.
